Dear readers, The Middle East crisis is sending shockwaves through our fisheries and aquaculture sectors, disrupting supply chains and inflating costs. Today, the Commission has taken a decisive action: we have activated the EMFAF crisis mechanism, enabling Member States to compensate fishers, aquaculture producers, processors, and retailers affected since 28 February. But even in challenging times, we must look ahead. The European Ocean Board met for the first time this month, steering the Ocean Pact’s implementation to ensure long-term resilience. And there is also reason for optimism: the BlueInvest Investor Report 2026 shows growing interest in the blue economy and increased investments. The voices of the new generation are driving change. At the Youth Policy Dialogue in Cyprus, 30 young Europeans presented bold, forward-thinking ideas to Commissioners Kadis and Micallef. Ideas that will now help shape policies like Vision 2040 and the EU Blue Generation Renewal strategy. Finally, I invite you to explore our latest success stories showing that EU-supported innovation is transforming challenges into opportunities: from Lubimar’s extensive aquaculture in Spain to Zeefier’s seaweed-based dyes in the Netherlands to CoastalPro’s gamified training for coastal tourism professionals. Main ports (vessels traffic) The European seas are a major hub of maritime traffic. Maritime transport moves 75% of the EU’s trade with other countries and 30% of goods between EU nations. Ports also serve as key energy centres for both traditional and renewable energy. Each year, nearly 400 million passengers pass through European ports. The Map of the Month highlights ship traffic in the EU’s busiest ports.   more
