Κατά τη διάρκεια της εποικοδομητικής αυτής συνάντησης, συζητήθηκαν ορισμένα κρίσιμα ζητήματα που απασχολούν τους κατοίκους της Δωδεκανήσου και επιβεβαιώθηκε η σταθερή υποστήριξη του κ. ● General Secretariat of the Council   Readers of Europe 2022 – Hungarian recommendation   This summer the Council Library will shine a light on new and emerging European literary talent, with the third instalment of our Readers of Europe initiative. Through books recommended by the Brussels-based permanent representations to the EU, the literary pit-stops on this tour will unearth some of Europe’s exciting new talent. Today’s selection is by the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the EU – ‘The Bone Fire’ by György Dragomán. Readers of Europe 2022 – Hungarian recommendation 20 July 2022 © Vadim Sadovski / Unsplash / Edited Recommendation by the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the EU Book selected: ‘The Bone Fire’ by György Dragomán György Dragomán’s subtle, masterful work 'The Bone Fire’, wraps a grandmother-granddaughter bonding tale around an interrogation of what freedom really means. Living in a post-Communist ex-Soviet state, thirteen year old Emma is taken from an orphanage by a grandmother she has never met. Her grandmother is a local witch whose home she shares with the ghost of her dead husband.  Post-war, Emma’s new community is a melting pot of troubles. A combination of people living in constant fear of informers and secret police. Destabilized from living in the long shadow of the Soviet Union, revolution follows revolution. Dragomán subtly shows how easily those fighting for freedom can turn on each other once their goal is reached. Drowned in memories, nothing is forgotten. There are stories about her grandfather. Whispers that he was an informer for the previous regime. There are rumors about her grandmother. Distrusted because of her strange powers. An impending witch hunt looms which could have catastrophic consequences for all. Amidst all this political upheaval, this is a coming of age tale of a young girl in the fog of adolescence. Emma struggles to fit in with the popular girls in her school. Some spit acquisitions about her grandfather. Saying little and weighed down by the absence of loved ones, she strives to get to grips with what people think of her. With who she is and what she could be.   Although magic is at the core of this book, the word magic is never uttered. Yet it is very present in almost every aspect of daily life. Emma learns the ways of her grandmother. An eerie figure who tells fortunes from coffee dregs, and can cause and heal pain at will. Meticulously paced and written in a very interesting style, there are long blocks of unbroken text with no quotation marks or line breaks for dialogue. An almost inner monologue of the thoughts of a teenage girl. Bleak, heartbreaking and enchanting, like any good tale of magic should be.   György Dragomán (1973) was born in Transylvania and moved to Hungary when he was fifteen. His first novel, The White King, has been translated into more than thirty languages and went on to win the Sandor Márai Prize and the Jan Michaelski Prize. The Council Library has therefore chosen to devote its annual Readers of Europe initiative to young people, putting the focus squarely on new and emerging European literary talent. The permanent representations to the EU have once again been invited to recommend books from their countries to read over the summer, with the third edition of our Readers of Europe campaign. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Discover something new’, the idea being that every permanent representation selects a book from their country by an author who has published their first work within the last five years. We will then promote these selections over the summer on the Council Library blog. Europe is awash with exciting young authors. Dive into this selection and discover stories that hum with fresh ideas and luminous prose. Novels that ask piercing questions about humanity. Stories that are edgy and beautiful, gripping and unsettling. Stories worthy of a place in any library. An increasing number of consumers buy goods and products online – a trend which was reinforced by the Covid-19 pandemic. To keep up with challenges linked to this trend, the GPSR proposal modernises the rules for online marketplaces and updates them for online businesses. The revised rules for general product safety aim to ensure that products of the digital age meet European safety standards. "Products sold in the European Union, online or offline, must be safe. In light of technological developments and the increasing digitalisation of our economy, it is important that we revise the current product safety rules." The Council’s mandate The Council position links product safety challenges to new technologies and to online marketplaces. Online marketplaces will have to make sure they know the traders and what kind of products they offer. Under the GPSR, they would also be required to establish a single point of contact in charge of product safety. The GPSR moreover creates a single market surveillance regime that applies to all products and ensures that economic operators have a responsible person for all products that are sold online and offline. It also improves rules on the recall of products, on food imitating products, and on consumer remedies. Russia: Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the EU on the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the Law on Foreign Agents

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the signing by President Putin of the law on “foreign agents”, a decade shaped by the Russian authorities’ growing fear of critical voices from within Russian society. This law was the first of several legislative measures, including the law on “undesirable organisations” in 2015 and the 2022 “fake news law”, purposely aimed at silencing and putting unprecedented pressure on Russia’s civil society, political opposition and independent media. The law on “foreign agents” has evolved over the years and continues to be elaborated to further stigmatise and significantly limit the rights of different groups of society, including NGOs, unregistered public associations, media outlets, journalists, activists and human rights defenders. The most resonant example of persecution based on the alleged violations of the “foreign agent” law is the forced closure of the internationally recognised Memorial International and the Memorial Human Rights Centre.

With these laws, Russia is clearly violating its commitments under international law to guarantee human rights and fundamental freedoms of its own citizens. This was confirmed by the 2021 Opinion of the Venice Commission and in June 2022 by the European Court of Human Rights. According to the Russian Constitution, international law is an integral part of Russian law.

Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine has amplified internal repression in Russia, targeting ordinary citizens and drastically limiting the right to freedom of expression and media freedom.

The massive expansion of restrictive legislation adopted since the beginning of the illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, including the law on so-called “false information about the use of the armed forces of the Russian Federation” (the 2022 “fake news law”) aims to further deprive the Russian people of independent information about illegal actions and atrocities committed by Russian forces in Ukraine. The increasing repression is thus a significant enabling factor of Russia’s aggression abroad and the people in Ukraine are paying a bitter price for it.

As a result of this censorship and repressive legislative framework, political opposition, human rights defenders, LGBTI persons, independent journalists, media workers and other Russian residents fearing the state repression have been compelled to flee their own country, while both local and international Civil Society Organisations, as well as international and Russian independent media outlets, have been shut down or forced to liquidate.

The European Union strongly condemns the systematic attempts to instigate fear and impose a crackdown on civil society, independent media and the democratic opposition in Russia. We will continue to support the important work of Russian civil society organisations, human rights defenders and independent media and journalists inside and outside Russia. We call once again on Russian authorities to abide by their international obligations and commitments regarding the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The historic moment for both countries and the EU as a whole came at the very beginning of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU. The launch of the talks was announced by EC President Ursula von der Leyen, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and the Prime Ministers of Albania Edi Rama and North Macedonia Dimitar Kovacevski after today's meeting in Brussels.

The historic moment for both countries and the EU as a whole came at the very beginning of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU. The launch of the talks was announced by EC President Ursula von der Leyen, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and the Prime Ministers of Albania Edi Rama and North Macedonia Dimitar Kovacevski after today's meeting in Brussels. "Both countries have long sought this step. As we all know, the main obstacle in recent times has been the relations between Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia. This has been unblocked. I am glad that the Czech Presidency is building on the work of the French Presidency and I am also glad that I had the opportunity to attend today's ceremonial and working moment," the Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said. Achieving a result that is acceptable to all was not easy. The two countries have been linked in temporally and procedurally in the EU integration process in recent years. To start their negotiations, a solution had to be found to Bulgaria's demands regarding the obligations of the bilateral friendship treaty with North Macedonia. The substantive framework for the agreement was negotiated by France during its Presidency. Under the Czech Presidency, the agreement was confirmed in the Macedonian Parliament in a complex manner and all the necessary procedural steps were completed. "It is in our interest that the countries of the Western Balkans integrate into the EU as quickly as possible. It is in the interest of the whole of Europe and, given what is happening around us and the security situation, we want the Balkans as a whole to be stable and to be part of a common Europe," Prime Minister Fiala added. The Western Balkans region has long been one of the priority areas of Czech foreign policy. Enlargement policy is a key strategic tool for the EU to maintain peace, stability, democracy and prosperity in Europe. "There is still a long way to go towards full membership of the European Union, which will certainly take several more years. But there is a strong interest from all to make the process as short as possible, and both Albania and Northern Macedonia express a strong will to fulfil all the conditions to become EU members as soon as possible. We are trying to make everything advance as quickly as possible. That is why we have convened intergovernmental conferences for today, which actually commence the whole process," said Prime Minister Fiala. Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský opened the intergovernmental conference on behalf of the European Union. "This is an important moment for the Western Balkans and the European Union," the Czech diplomatic chief said at the opening of the accession conferences. "We know that the approval process in the Macedonian Parliament was painful and difficult for your country, but your determination prevailed," Lipavský praised the commitment of North Macedonia in the difficult compromise. He mentioned Albania's patience in waiting for the unblocking. "For several years you have stood firmly by North Macedonia as your neighbour and co-candidate. I am very happy that the wait is over for both of you," the minister said. The Czech Republic has long supported the enlargement of the EU to include the Western Balkan countries. This is one of the important priorities of the Czech Presidency. "Personally, I am very happy that it is the Czech Presidency that is at the beginning of the launch of accession negotiations. The Czech Republic has also gone through this process. It has a very good perception of its complexity, but also of the benefits it ultimately brings," Minister Lipavský said at the opening of the conference. Carrier strike groups sail under NATO command For the first time since the end of the Cold War, a US Navy aircraft carrier sailed under NATO command. The USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (CSG) first sailed under the command of Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) in February 2022, during vigilance activity Neptune Strike 22, and most recently during Exercise Neptune Spear 22 in May. The carrier has sailed with CSGs from France, Italy and Spain since arriving in the Mediterranean Sea late last year. Together, the strike groups have practised operating as a combined maritime task force. Their carrier-launched fighter jets have helped secure the skies over the eastern part of the Alliance, providing a crucial show of support during a time of increased tensions. ...Το Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο αλλάζει προς μια κατεύθυνση που προκαλεί ανησυχία. Μετά την απόφαση που απαγορεύει τις αμβλώσεις, όλα τα βλέμματα είναι στραμμένα στο εκλογικό δίκαιο.

Στις αρχές Μαΐου γύρω από το Ανώτατο Συνταγματικό Δικαστήριο των ΗΠΑ κατασκευάστηκε φράχτης «για την προστασία των μελών του Δικαστηρίου», σύμφωνα με την εφημερίδα Washington Post. O φράχτης έχει πλέον αναχθεί σε σύμβολο διαίρεσης και χαμένης αξιοπιστίας. Η απόφαση που περιστέλλει το δικαίωμα των αμβλώσεων είναι κατά πολλούς μόνο η αρχή. Το Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο των ΗΠΑ έχει βυθιστεί σε βαθιά κρίση διχάζοντας την κοινωνία. Τα βλέμματα όλων είναι στραμμένα τώρα στο τι θα αποφανθούν οι συντηρητικοί δικαστές και για το εκλογικό δίκαιο της χώρας....

About the conference

Aim of the conference

The 2nd International Rehabilitation Conference is a 2-day event, with presentations delivered by researchers from the international community, including presentations from keynote speakers and state-of-the-art lectures. It will be held at Metropolitan College, Maroussi Campus, Athens, Greece, on 4-5 of November, 2022. All registered papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings. 

This common interdisciplinary platform is expected to:

Highlight the rehabilitation definition of WHO, as a set of interventions designed to optimise functioning and reduce disability in individuals, in interaction with their environment, where rehabilitation is an investment in human capital that contributes to health, economic and social development to create enabling environments. Highlight the fact that disability is a human rights issue and communicate it at a local and international level, by raising awareness about people with disabilities and their struggle for equal rights.

The Scientific and Organising Committees of the conference invite citizens with disabilities, service providers, funding bodies, professional organisations, research organisations, academic institutions, non-governmental and governmental organisations, as well as national and international organisations to actively participate in the 2nd International Rehabilitation Conference.
