BARACK OBAMA:15 years ago today

 

Hi friend, With everything going on right now, it’s easy to feel like regular folks can’t change this country for the better. But if it could happen 15 years ago, it can happen again. Today is the 15th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act. Nearly 50 million people have received quality, affordable health care through the ACA. That’s almost one in seven Americans.  When the Obama Presidential Center opens next year, we’ll be highlighting the advocates and everyday Americans from across the country whose stories helped make the ACA a reality. To mark this milestone, I’d like to give you a behind-the-scenes look at this exhibit. Please take a look: The ACA taught us that some things are bigger than politics – and making sure people don’t lose their livelihoods when a family member gets sick is one of those things. That’s why we worked so hard to make it happen – and we're not finished yet. I’ve always said that the ACA is like a starter house: it was a big step forward, but still just a first step. There’s no question that we still have work to do to make sure health care is a right and not a privilege in America.  When you visit the Obama Presidential Center in 2026, I hope you leave ready to do the work and make a difference. Michelle Obama:Celebrating International Women’s Day

 

Hi there,  Happy International Women’s Day!  Today, I’m celebrating changemakers from the Girls Opportunity Alliance who are working tirelessly to create a brighter future for girls around the world. Five years ago, I met a young woman in Vietnam who told me how education impacted her life—and her story stays with me to this day. When she was a student, members of Tây Thi’s family burned her books and insisted she get a job and drop out of school.   Fortunately, with the help of Room to Read—an organization we’ve collaborated with through the Girls Opportunity Alliance—Tây Thi was able to continue studying. She took her college exams in secret and was able to finish the education she deserved.  Today, she works as an English teacher, and each year, she pays forward the gift of education by donating 1,000 notebooks to her local school. Seeing Tây Thi’s success also helped her family have a change of heart about the power of education, too.   As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I hope you’ll learn about stories like Tây Thi’s, because everyone deserves to be able to finish school and make the life they dream for themselves. Hi there,  Last week the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance celebrated its 11th anniversary. That’s more than one decade of transformative programming and initiatives in service of boys and young men of color. Today, the MBK Alliance is incredibly excited to further that work by introducing the first cohort of MBK Ambassadors! The MBK Ambassadors program is an initiative dedicated to cultivating the next generation of brilliant leaders. Through immersive mentorship and service-learning, the MBK Ambassadors program aims to create meaningful impact for boys and young men of color across MBK’s six key milestones. This group of 18 young brothers includes participants from MBK’s four model communities and our first tribal Certified Community, all of whom are dedicated to imparting positive change in the world around them. Learn more about our inspiring young men. Each MBK Ambassador was nominated and selected based upon his community involvement and commitment to doing the work necessary to reach his maximum potential. As part of the program, our Ambassadors will participate in virtual and in-person convenings, brother-to-brother sessions, MBK events, and community projects all tailored to promote a spirit of collaboration and leadership amongst the cohort. Additionally, our Ambassadors will receive a stipend to work with MBK Certified Community leads to implement impactful, evidence-based practices for community-centered initiatives. Our MBK Ambassadors are representative of the power of unity and brotherhood and the tangible difference each can make in the life of a young person. We look forward to further enriching the lives of these young men as they work to drive real change in their communities. I look forward to sharing more about the stories, experiences, and impact of our MBK Ambassadors as they matriculate through our program. Hi friend, This Black History Month, we’re excited to introduce you to an inspiring entrepreneur and neighbor of the future Obama Presidential Center: Julia Perkins.  After suffering with a condition that causes joint pain and stiffness, Julia opened Studio Yogi in 2023 to bring her neighborhood an inclusive yoga studio that makes movement accessible for all, while giving community members a place to gather and connect. Learn more about Studio Yogi, Julia’s journey to opening a beloved community space, and her hopes for how the Obama Presidential Center will impact the South Shore neighborhood. When the Obama Presidential Center opens next year, we’ll build on the work Julia and others have been doing for years to create welcoming community spaces and opportunities for health and wellness on the South Side of Chicago. Julia hopes that the economic impact of the Center will also drive investment into the South Shore neighborhood, which has long been a hub for Black entrepreneurship.  “You cannot leave behind the people who have been South Shore residents for 30 and 40 years. It has to be a collaborative effort,” said Julia. “That is what I believe the Center can do.
