Statement from President Biden on United Nations Security Council Meeting
JANUARY 31, 2022

Today in the United Nations Security Council, the United States presented in detail the full nature of Russia’s threat to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. And we made clear to the international community the full implications of that threat — not just for Ukraine, but for core tenets of the UN Charter and the modern international order.

If Russia is sincere about addressing our respective security concerns through dialogue, the United States and our Allies and partners will continue to engage in good faith. If instead Russia chooses to walk away from diplomacy and attack Ukraine, Russia will bear the responsibility, and it will face swift and severe consequences.

The United States and our Allies and partners continue to prepare for every scenario. The world must be clear-eyed about the actions Russia is threatening and ready to respond to the risks those actions present to all of us. Today’s Security Council meeting is a critical step in rallying the world to speak out in one voice: rejecting the use of force, calling for military de-escalation, supporting diplomacy as the best path forward, and demanding accountability from every member state to refrain from military aggression against its neighbors.

Και καταστήσαμε σαφές στη διεθνή κοινότητα τις πλήρεις συνέπειες αυτής της απειλής — όχι μόνο για την Ουκρανία, αλλά για τις βασικές αρχές του Χάρτη του ΟΗΕ και της σύγχρονης διεθνούς τάξης.

Press material Monday 31 January 2022   ● Council of the EU   31/01/2022 18:03 | Press release | Myanmar/Burma: Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union   One year ago, on 1 February 2021, the military authorities in Myanmar forcibly overthrew the civilian government in blatant violation of the will of the people as expressed in the general elections of 8 November 2020. This act halted the country’s democratic transition with disastrous humanitarian, social, security, economic and human rights consequences. Since the beginning of the crisis, the EU stands unequivocally with the people of Myanmar, continuing to strive for a return to democracy. The European Union is deeply concerned by the continuing escalation of violence and the evolution towards a protracted conflict with regional implications. Since the military coup, the situation has continuously and gravely deteriorated. A large part of the population is now in a highly precarious situation, experiencing poverty, food shortages, displacement, and violence. More than 1,500 people have been killed, over 8,600 are currently under detention and 80 people sentenced to death. There are over 400,000 newly displaced people since the military take-over. This is in addition to almost one million Myanmar refugees in neighbouring countries. The European Union condemns in the strongest terms continuing grave human rights violations including torture, sexual and gender based violence, the continued persecution of civil society, human rights defenders and journalists, attacks on the civilian population, including ethnic and religious minorities by the Myanmar armed forces. Therefore, the EU calls for full accountability of the leaders responsible for the coup as well as of the perpetrators of violence and human rights violations. The EU also reiterates its firm demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners arbitrarily detained in relation to the coup and the return to power of democratically elected leaders. As a matter of priority, the EU reiterates its calls for an immediate cessation of all hostilities, and an end to the disproportionate use of force and the state of emergency. The military authorities must ensure rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access to all displaced persons and people in need, in all parts of the country. The European Union will continue to provide humanitarian assistance, in accordance with the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence and reiterates its call for the full and immediate respect of international humanitarian law. The European Union reiterates its strong support for ASEAN’s efforts in finding a peaceful solution to the crisis and stresses the need for Myanmar to implement swiftly and faithfully ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus of 24 April 2021, in particular inclusive dialogue with all parties concerned – including the National Unity Government, the Committeee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and the ethnic groups - as well as granting access by the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to all stakeholders. We also fully support the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Noeleen Heyzer, and welcome her close coordination with ASEAN. We echo her call for trust-building efforts by all stakeholders and concrete progress on the ground. In view of the escalating violence in Myanmar, increased international action is required in line with the already existing EU arms embargo on Myanmar. Since the military coup on 1 February 2021, the EU has imposed targeted sanctions on the Myanmar military, its leaders and entities. In the absence of any swift progress of the situation in Myanmar, the EU stands ready to adopt further restrictive measures against those responsible for undermining democracy and the serious human rights violations in Myanmar.

Σημερινή δήλωση του Ευάγγελου Βενιζέλου - Απάντηση σε όσα είπε η Κυβέρνηση δια του εκπροσώπου της για την υπόθεση Novartis



« Η χθεσινή μου δήλωση για τον διαχωρισμό που έκανε ο κ. Μητσοτάκης μεταξύ των στελεχών του κόμματός του και των άλλων προσώπων - στόχων της σκευωρίας Novartis είχα την ελπίδα ότι θα τον διευκόλυνε να σκεφτεί το θεσμικό και ιστορικό υπόβαθρο αυτής της συζήτησης.



Δυστυχώς οι σημερινές δηλώσεις του κυβερνητικού εκπροσώπου με απογοήτευσαν. Προσωπικά δεν έχω ανάγκη από τη συγγνώμη του κ. Τσίπρα και δεν έχω αναθέσει την πολιτική και ηθική εκπροσώπησή μου σε κανένα. Ουδέποτε όμως μέχρι χθες είχαν διαχωριστεί οι στόχοι της σκευωρίας με βάση την κομματική τους ταυτότητα. Ο κ. Π. Πικραμμένος συκοφαντήθηκε ως υπηρεσιακός Πρωθυπουργός, ιδιότητα που απέκτησε ως Πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου της Επικράτειας. Ο κ. Ι. Στουρνάρας ως Διοικητής της Τράπεζας της Ελλάδος δεν ανήκει σε κάποιο κόμμα. Ας μου επιτραπεί να πω ότι και εγώ ως αντιπρόεδρος και κυβερνητικός εταίρος της Κυβέρνησης Σαμαρά - Βενιζέλου δεν εξέφραζα μόνο το ΠΑΣΟΚ του οποίου ήμουν Πρόεδρος. Ίσως κάτι θυμάται σχετικά ο κ. Μητσοτάκης ως μέλος της κυβέρνησης εκείνης.



Η αντίδραση μου αφορά την έλλειψη κατανόησης και σεβασμού των θεμελίων της μεταβολής που συντελέστηκε τον Ιούλιο του 2019. Δεν υποτιμώ τα εκλογικά ποσοστά που έλαβε το 2019 η Νέα Δημοκρατία υπό την ηγεσία του κ. Μητσοτάκη. Οδηγηθήκαμε όμως στη μεταβολή των πολιτικών συνθηκών, επειδή κάποιοι έδωσαν πολυετή και σκληρό αγώνα, παίζοντας τη ζωή και την τιμή τους, για να μείνει η χώρα όρθια μέχρι το 2015 και στη συνέχεια προκειμένου να ανακοπεί ο κίνδυνος για την οικονομία, τη δημοκρατία και τον τόπο και να οδηγηθεί στην ήττα ο ΣΥΡΙΖΑ και οι συμπράττοντες.



Κορυφαίο σημείο του αγώνα αυτού ήταν η απόκρουση και η κατάρρευση της σκευωρίας Novartis. Δυστυχώς τα πολιτικά και θεσμικά ανακλαστικά της σημερινής κυβέρνησης σε ό,τι αφορά αυστηρώς τις αρμοδιότητες του νομοθέτη και του Υπουργού Δικαιοσύνης ως προς το πλέγμα των θεσμικών ανομιών της σκευωρίας Novartis ήταν και είναι ακόμη πολύ αργά. Αν ο κ. Μητσοτάκης θέλει, με κομματικά κριτήρια, να απαιτεί τη συγγνώμη του κ. Τσίπρα για τα στελέχη της Νέας Δημοκρατίας, ας το κάνει.



Εγώ ζητώ από τον Πρωθυπουργό ως θεσμό να θυμάται την πρόσφατη ιστορία και να διασφαλίζει το νομοθετικό πλαίσιο του σεβασμού της ανεξαρτησίας της Δικαιοσύνης και του καταλογισμού των ευθυνών.»

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia:

“Today, we remember the six people who lost their lives and the 19 others who were seriously injured during the terrorist attack at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Sainte-Foy.

“On the fifth anniversary of this tragedy, we also mark the first National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia. Today, we pay tribute to the victims of this hateful act of terror, who were senselessly killed at the hands of bigotry, Islamophobia, and racism. We express solidarity with the survivors and those injured, the families and friends who lost a loved one, and all the communities of Quebec City and across Canada whose lives have been changed forever.

“We also honour the heroes and first responders who acted swiftly and courageously to save the lives of worshippers. This cowardly attack sought to instill fear and divide us. Instead, Canadians came together and united around shared values of diversity, peace, and respect. They showed their support to Muslim communities in Quebec City and across Canada by fighting discrimination, intolerance, and hatred in all its forms.

“Canada strives to champion human rights, freedom of expression, and freedom of belief. The government condemns Islamophobia and all forms of racism and discrimination in our society, and that is why confronting Islamophobia is an important part of Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy.

“Last July, the Government of Canada held a National Summit on Islamophobia, where we committed to supporting anti‑racism programs that address Islamophobia and hate-fueled violence. We are moving forward with our intention to work with Muslim communities on the designation of a special representative to combat Islamophobia.

“Our strategy includes a whole-of-government approach to tackling systemic racism with dedicated knowledge and expertise through the Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat. It also includes investments to empower communities to combat different forms of racism, including Islamophobia, and to advance digital and civic literacy initiatives that address online disinformation and hate speech. We will establish a National Support Fund for Survivors of Hate-Motivated Crimes to help survivors and are committed to renewing and strengthening the Anti-Racism Strategy in 2022 with a National Action Plan to expand on our ongoing work to combat hate and racism.

“The government will continue to strengthen gun control. On July 7, 2021, we extended background checks to cover the lifetime of an applicant looking to obtain a firearms licence. We have also banned 1,500 assault-style weapons, and will proceed with a mandatory buyback, meaning these firearms can never be sold, transferred or bequeathed, and ensuring they’re rendered fully and permanently inoperable at government expense. We know there is more work to do and we want to work with any province or territory that wants to ban handguns across their jurisdiction. Our government also invested in the Communities at Risk: Security Infrastructure Program, to provide funding and support for communities at risk of hate crimes.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I encourage everyone to take a moment to remember the victims and survivors of the fatal shooting at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec and to all those affected by this heinous crime. Together, we will continue to fight against Islamophobia, and all other forms of hatred, as we build a stronger, more diverse, and more inclusive Canada.”

Le premier ministre Justin Trudeau a fait aujourd’hui la déclaration suivante à l’occasion de la Journée nationale de commémoration de l’attentat à la mosquée de Québec et d’action contre l’islamophobie :

« Aujourd’hui, nous nous rappelons les six personnes qui ont perdu la vie et les 19 autres qui ont été gravement blessées au cours de l’attentat terroriste au Centre culturel islamique de Québec à Sainte-Foy.

« À l’occasion du cinquième anniversaire de cette tragédie, nous soulignons également la première Journée nationale de commémoration de l’attentat à la mosquée de Québec et d’action contre l’islamophobie. En ce jour, nous rendons hommage aux victimes de cet acte de terrorisme motivé par la haine, qui ont été tuées de manière insensée dans un accès d’intolérance, d’islamophobie et de racisme. Nous sommes solidaires des survivants et des personnes blessées, des familles et amis qui ont perdu un être cher ainsi que de toutes les communautés de Québec et du Canada tout entier dont la vie a changé à jamais.

« Nous rendons également hommage aux héros et aux premiers répondants qui ont agi avec empressement et courage pour sauver la vie des fidèles. Ce lâche attentat visait à instaurer un climat de peur et de division. Bien au contraire, les Canadiens se sont serré les coudes, unis autour de leurs valeurs communes de diversité, de paix et de respect. Ils ont témoigné leur soutien aux communautés musulmanes de Québec et de partout au Canada en luttant contre la discrimination, l’intolérance et la haine sous toutes ses formes.

« Le Canada s’efforce de défendre les droits de la personne, la liberté d’expression et la liberté de croyance. Le gouvernement condamne l’islamophobie et toutes les formes de racisme et de discrimination qui existent dans notre société, et c’est pourquoi la lutte contre l’islamophobie fait partie intégrante de la Stratégie canadienne de lutte contre le racisme.

« En juillet dernier, le gouvernement du Canada a tenu le Sommet national sur l’islamophobie. Lors de cet événement, nous nous sommes engagés à soutenir des programmes de lutte contre le racisme qui visent l’islamophobie et la violence motivée par la haine. De plus, nous donnons suite à notre intention de travailler de concert avec les communautés musulmanes afin de désigner un représentant spécial chargé de la lutte contre l’islamophobie.

« Notre stratégie prévoit l’adoption d’une approche pangouvernementale pour éliminer le racisme systémique. Elle est fondée sur les connaissances du Secrétariat fédéral de lutte contre le racisme et ses compétences en la matière. Elle comporte également des investissements qui donneront les moyens aux communautés de lutter contre différentes formes de racisme, y compris l’islamophobie, et qui permettront de favoriser des initiatives de littératie numérique et d’éducation citoyenne abordant la désinformation et le discours haineux. Nous établirons aussi le Fonds national de soutien pour les victimes de crimes motivés par la haine afin d’aider les survivants. De plus, nous sommes déterminés à renouveler et à renforcer la Stratégie de lutte contre le racisme en 2022 en l’assortissant d’un plan d’action national qui permettra d’élargir les efforts que nous menons actuellement pour lutter contre la haine et le racisme.

« Le gouvernement continuera de renforcer le contrôle des armes à feu. Le 7 juillet 2021, nous avons élargi la vérification des antécédents pour qu’elle porte sur la vie entière d’un demandeur souhaitant obtenir un permis d’arme à feu. Nous avons également interdit 1 500 armes d’assaut et allons procéder à la mise en place d’un rachat obligatoire, ce qui signifie que ces armes à feu ne pourront jamais être vendues, transférées ou léguées, les rendant ainsi complètement inutilisables aux frais du gouvernement. Nous savons qu’il reste du travail à faire et nous voulons le faire avec les provinces et les territoires qui désirent instaurer l’interdiction des armes de poing sur leur territoire. Notre gouvernement a également investi dans le Programme de financement des projets d’infrastructure de sécurité pour les collectivités à risque pour offrir du financement et du soutien aux communautés susceptibles d’être victimes de crimes haineux.

« Au nom du gouvernement du Canada, j’encourage tout le monde à prendre le temps de se rappeler les victimes et les survivants de la fusillade meurtrière survenue au Centre culturel islamique de Québec ainsi que toutes les personnes ayant été touchées par ce crime odieux. Ensemble, nous poursuivrons notre combat contre l’islamophobie et toutes les formes de haine à mesure que nous bâtirons un pays plus fort, plus diversifié et plus inclusif. »
