NEWS ITEM Transparency and subsidy notification compliance spotlighted at committee meeting At a meeting of the Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM) on 29 October 2024, the Chair Dr Wolfram Spelten (Germany) emphasized the critical importance of transparency for the effective functioning of the SCM Agreement. He expressed concern over WTO members’ persistently low compliance rates with subsidy notification obligations and urged members to submit their pending notifications promptly. NATO Secretary General visits Germany On Monday, 4 November 2024, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte travelled to Berlin, Germany. The NATO Secretary General met the German Chancellor, Mr Olaf Scholz and the German Minister of Defence, Mr Boris Pistorius. NATO’s Arctic Marines – Journey through the High North NATO’s marines are among the toughest troops in the Alliance. But in the Arctic, tough isn’t enough – marines must be unusually skilled and resilient to survive the freezing temperatures and rugged landscape. In early 2024, marine forces from several NATO Allies got to test their mettle against the High North, putting their cold weather lessons into practice while learning new tactics from their counterparts during exercise Steadfast Defender 24. Finnish, Italian and Swedish marines worked together to stage amphibious raids on the coast of Norway, while US marines improved their survival skills inland, learning what their Nordic Allies already know: when it comes to deep snow, skis are the only way to get around. Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The leaders discussed the situation on the ground, and Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to providing military, financial, humanitarian, and other support to Ukraine until it achieves victory against Russia’s unjustifiable war of aggression.

Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s support for President Zelenskyy’s ongoing diplomatic efforts toward a just and sustainable peace. The two leaders also discussed Ukraine’s victory plan, and the Prime Minister conveyed Canada’s support for the plan’s objectives.

The leaders condemned North Korea’s troop deployment to support Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine.

The Prime Minister and the President noted the success of the Ministerial Conference on the Human Dimension of Ukraine’s 10-Point Peace Formula, which was held last week in Montréal, Quebec. They highlighted the efforts made at the Conference to help return deported children, unlawfully detained civilians, and prisoners of war currently held by Russia, as well as to reintegrate them back into their daily lives in Ukraine.

The leaders agreed to remain in close and regular contact.
