Spanning the Tide: AHEPA Leads the Way in Key Bridge Disaster Relief |
|
AHEPA Supreme President Savas Tsivicos authorizes the opening of the AHEPA Emergency Relief Fund |
|
In the wake of the Key Bridge disaster, AHEPA's Baltimore area chapters swiftly mobilized to provide essential relief. In addition to opening the AHEPA Emergency Relief Fund, we have asked our Region 2 Supreme Governor, Georgio Comninos and the chapters within Capital District #3 to assist in our efforts. The response from AHEPA was both immediate and impactful, with multiple chapters, particularly AHEPA Chapter 535, stepping up and showcasing an inspiring commitment to aiding those affected by the crisis. AHEPA has worked in a community partnership, marshalling several local businesses in this humanitarian endeavor. Dunkin Donuts, Pats Pizza, Hilltop Pizza, and Dependable Management, among others, demonstrated commendable corporate citizenship. Essential supplies such as food, water, and coffee, crucial for sustaining the emergency response teams tirelessly working at the Key Bridge site continues and will do so for a protracted period. AHEPA and its partners have delivered more than 2000 bottles of water, nearly 400 pizzas, an endless line of coffee, and farm-fresh fruits for the 24-7 on site crisis workers. |
|
AHEPA's emergency response efforts have been challenging and even extraordinary. These vital supplies were and continue to be distributed to teams operating on both sides of the collapsed bridge, ensuring that those on the front lines have the support, sustenance and hydration necessary to continue their challenging work. AHEPA's response to the Key Bridge disaster has also been assisted by District Governor Ari Bouloubassis, particularly on the challenging logistics of serving both ends of the disaster's bridge span. The AHEPA team can use your assistance to ensure their work continues. Consider this request as a poignant reminder of what can be achieved when AHEPA communities unite for a common cause. |
|
The Baltimore chapters of AHEPA have made a significant impact in the face of adversity following the Key Bridge disaster. Consider any contribution, large or small to these relief efforts.
Fraternally, |

AHEPA Foundation Inc. Receives Transformational $17.3 Million Gift |
|
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With a transformational gift of $17.3 million, the AHEPA Foundation Inc., a charitable arm of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (Order of AHEPA), will establish the John George Tsitsos Scholarship Fund. The benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, aims for the Fund to help persons of Greek ancestry in their pursuit of studies to advance and promote knowledge in the fields of science, mathematics, computers, technology, physics and medical research through the distribution of scholarship and grant awards. AHEPA Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos expressed his congratulations to Chairman of the Board Nicholas A. Karacostas, PSP; and Executive Director Basil N. Mossaidis for their hard work to secure this momentous donation. In a joint statement, Chairman Karacostas and Executive Director Mossaidis said: “We are immensely grateful to our benefactor for a transformative gift that will have an everlasting beneficial impact upon the AHEPA Foundation Inc., and the community which it serves. The gift validates and places trust in the mission-driven work we are doing to provide students with access to educational opportunities. By launching the John George Tsitsos Scholarship Fund, we are now strongly positioned to help students pursue their academic dreams and to situate them for career success for generations to come. Amid the rising cost of higher education, our mission is strengthened significantly with deep thanks to the generosity of benefactors such as our anonymous donor.” The anonymous donor acknowledged the longstanding track record of AHEPA’s work to provide scholarship awards and grants to high school, undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students, and seminarians, for more than a half century. The donor appreciates that their gift will allow AHEPA, through its National Educational Foundation, to continue to provide students with financial assistance in memory of John George Tsitsos.

Happy Greek Independence Day!From the Desk of the Supreme PresidentMarch 25, 2024 |

Dear AHEPA Family, Fellow Hellenes and Philhellenes,
In 1821, after nearly 400 years of Ottoman oppression, the Greeks bound together under a flag bearing the cross to fight for freedom and justice in the land which gifted the world democracy. Like the revolution which took place in America 45 years earlier, Greece would embark on a journey forever linking our two countries in their struggle for freedom and independence. |
|
The founding fathers of the United States of America drew upon the ideals and principles forged in ancient Greece in constructing our nation. Thomas Jefferson called ancient Greece "the light which led ourselves out of Gothic darkness." All who cherish a free and democratic government are beneficiaries of Greece's legacy and thus should consider themselves Philhellenes. This is why Americans fought alongside the Greeks during their struggle for freedom in the Greek War of Independence, most notably Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe. In so doing, many made the ultimate sacrifice. The Greeks received the support of Jefferson, President James Monroe, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, and U.S. Representatives Daniel Webster and Henry Clay. Additionally, American Philhellenes rallied support for the war effort by holding fundraising events in several American cities. |
|
| |
Throughout history, Greece and the United States have stood shoulder-to-shoulder to face the challenges of an ever-changing world. Greece had been allied with the United States in every major conflict of the 20th century. The strong alliance continues into the 21st century. Greece, via NSA Souda Bay, Crete, the port of Alexandroupolis, and other military capabilities and bases, has contributed significantly to NATO and United States missions, including peacekeeping operations, in an ever-increasingly important region of the world. United States government officials have called Greece "a pillar of stability" in the Eastern Mediterranean region and relations maintain an “all-time” high level. Today, we see Greece standing up for democracy and freedom as those ideals and values are under attack by Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. We sincerely thank our public officials at the federal (U.S. Senate / U.S. House), state, and local levels of government, including President Joe Biden (proclamation) and the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues; who recognize the significance of Greek Independence, the close and enduring partnership between the United States and Greece, and the contributions of the Greek American community to society. |
|
In celebration of the 203rd anniversary of Greece's Independence, AHEPA family chapters, districts, and the Greek diaspora, are working together to promote this important day in our Hellenic history. We will secure proclamations from state and local governments, organize flag-raising ceremonies at various State Capitols and City Halls, and lay wreaths at memorial sites. Indeed, AHEPA family members worldwide proudly promote and sustain the celebration of this historic day for all Hellenes.
Thank you to every Hellene and Philhellene for your dedicated efforts to spread the Hellenic spirit worldwide!
