Future of the European Court of Human Rights   The CCBE’s Permanent Delegation to the European Court of Human Rights, chaired by Piers Gardner, held a round table specifically focused on the future of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on 14 March in Brussels. A similar round table was organised in October last year on the role of lawyers in the execution of the ECtHR’s judgements. The results of these round tables will serve as a basis for the preparation of the CCBE’s contribution to the current debate on the future of the ECtHR.   Read more Avenir de la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme   La délégation permanente du CCBE auprès de la Cour européenne des droits de l'homme, présidée par Piers Gardner, a organisé une table ronde spécialement consacrée à l'avenir de la Cour européenne des droits de l'homme (CEDH), le 14 mars à Bruxelles. CCBE makes recommendations on the protection of fundamental rights in the context of national security   The CCBE position paper on the protection of fundamental rights in the context of National Security will soon be available on its website. The core issue addressed by the CCBE in its position relates to the idea of ‘national security’ and its indeterminate meaning. At both national and international level, there is no universally accepted definition of national security. As a result, even where domestic law provides a certain degree of definitional clarity, from one country to another this leads to radically different interpretation by the courts as they assess what is, or is not, considered necessary and proportionate when invoking national security as a justification for measures which limit citizens’ fundamental rights.   Read more Recommandations du CCBE sur la protection des droits fondamentaux dans le contexte de la sécurité nationale   La prise de position du CCBE sur la protection des droits fondamentaux dans le contexte de la sécurité nationale sera bientôt disponible sur son site Internet. Il n'existe pas, que ce soit au niveau national ou international, de définition de la sécurité nationale universellement acceptée. CCBE submitted a response to the Commission’s consultation on the EU’s implementation of the Aarhus Convention in the field of access to justice in environmental matters   On 14 March, the CCBE submitted a response to the Commission’s consultation on the EU’s implementation of the Aarhus Convention in the field of access to justice in environmental matters. More Celebrations for Greek Independence Day Celebrations continue for the 198th Anniversary of Greek Independence. Over the weekend, the AHEPA family participated at parades held in Baltimore and Tarpon Springs, Florida, and attended the The Federation of Hellenic American Societies of Philadelphia and Greater Delaware Valley's annual Eleftheria Banquet.  We're proud to share a few highlights in our updated photo gallery The Ahepan | Spring 2019 Issue Hot off the electronic press! Check out the spring 2019 edition of The Ahepan. We recap two successful regional banquets, preview the upcoming 2019 Supreme Convention in Chicago, see highlights of how the AHEPA family's community service and philanthropic outreach enriches society in the Chapter News section, and much more!  Former National Educational Foundation Chair   Dr. Durbetaki Passes Away AHEPA mourns the passing of former National Educational Foundation Chairman Dr. Pandeli "Lee" Durbetaki. Brother Durbetaki, of Sandy Springs, Ga., passed away March 27, 2019. He was 90. In addition to serving as chair of the National Educational Foundation, Dr. Durbetaki was a founding director and former chairman of Mother Lodge Chapter 1 Educational Fund and a founding director and treasurer of the AHEPA Centennial Foundation, Inc., the entity that built the TRIBUTE sculpture that is a centerpiece in Centennial Olympic Park in commemoration of the Centennial Olympic Games (1996) and the George C. Marshall statue at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece. An accomplished mechanical engineer, he served on the team at Georgia Tech that engineered the 1996 Olympic relay torch.  "We are deeply saddened with the news of Brother Durbetaki's passing," Supreme President George E. Loucas said. "We are grateful to his decades of service to the Order where he made significant contributions to ensure scholars could pursue their academic dreams and for his dedication to the promotion of Hellenic ideals. Our deepest sympathies are with the Durbetaki family.
