Now, with public debt exceeding annual economic output in many advanced economies, questions arise about how much more it can be extended. The March issue of Finance & Development examines “The Debt Reckoning.”    Record-high debt levels in several advanced economies are driving up borrowing costs for governments and consumers alike, especially in a high interest environment. Our contributors consider the difficult choices that policymakers face: Raise taxes, cut spending, stoke inflation—or delay the reckoning by borrowing even more and praying markets won’t impose too high a premium.    “Discipline is urgently required,” writes Gita Bhatt, editor-in-chief of F&D magazine. “The alternative, as our contributors show, is a growing risk of economic turmoil and erosion of faith in government.” Explore the Issue ASIA Shaping Asia's Future While the last quarter century has been “Asia’s golden hour”—marked by record-breaking economic growth and poverty reduction—the region can now build on its successes. This means navigating a “potentially prolonged period of flux,” a “new normal” of uncertainty driven by technological and demographic transformations as well as geopolitical tensions.   “Global economic resilience is tested yet again by the new conflict in the Middle East. And as in all conflicts, I mourn the human suffering and loss of life,” said IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. “For most of Asia, what is at stake is energy security and, through that, confidence.”   Speaking at the "Asia in 2050" conference in Bangkok, Georgieva highlighted three challenges facing the region: lifting productivity and competitiveness by harnessing AI, managing labor market pressures, and building resilience and preserving trade as an engine of growth through regional integration.   According to IMF estimates, AI could boost Asia’s annual GDP growth by up to 0.8 percentage points. “IMF analysis also suggests that a push for closer trade links—focused on lowering nontariff barriers—could on average raise Asian GDP by 1.8 percent in the long run,” Georgieva noted. Learn More FOREIGN RESERVES Adequate Reserves Shield Economies From Shocks and Strengthen Resilience A common characteristic of crisis-prone countries is their low level of reserves. And “just like households, countries need access to adequate liquid resources, which can be sold quickly to help manage unexpected shocks,” writes IMF Chief Economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas in a new blog.   Building these reserves is a long-term commitment that requires organic growth through fiscal discipline and trade surpluses rather than an overreliance on volatile short-term borrowing. But there are significant hurdles: one is the high opportunity cost of holding safe, low-yield assets.   To support these efforts, the global community should explore cooperative solutions to lower the cost of self-insurance, such as expanding the menu of certified reserve assets to include longer-term dollar bonds and utilizing common investment funds to boost returns. Watch Here FISCAL AFFAIRS IMF World Revenue Longitudinal Database Tax revenues have grown steadily over the past two decades and now account for roughly 57 percent of total government revenue worldwide. But there are sharp differences between income groups. Since 2007, we have seen stable tax revenues in advanced economies, an upward trend in emerging markets, and falling revenues in low-income developing countries.   You can see these and other trends in the 2026 update of the World Revenue Longitudinal Database (WoRLD). It covers Aruba and Liechtenstein for the first time, lifting to 195 the total number of countries in this unique IMF database.    Download the updated technical note and explore the dataset.
