Secretary General: German leadership in NATO matters for peace in Europe NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in Berlin on Friday (10 November 2023). Mr Stoltenberg thanked Defence Minister Pistorius for his leadership in transforming the German Bundeswehr and for Germany’s major part in strengthening NATO’s defences. The Secretary General stressed that Germany’s new Defence Policy guidelines demonstrate its commitment to increased defence spending. “We need a strong Bundeswehr, which is ready to fight at the heart of the Alliance,” he said, welcoming Germany’s clear commitment to invest 2 percent of GDP on defence by next year. “This reflects Germany’s responsibility and Germany’s leadership”, he added. Bells of Peace 2023 Dear maria, Tomorrow we are tolling the Bells of Peace around the country and at the National WWI Memorial in Washington, D.C. Initiated in 2018 to commemorate the WWI Armistice's 100th anniversary, this ceremony at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month honors all Americans who have served and are serving their nation and the cherished peace they protect with their dedication and sacrifice. Watch the National Bells of Peace Live Stream Joins us live at the National WWI Memorial in DC online at Youtube.Com/@DoughboyFoundation Bells of Peace @ the National WWI Memorial, will begin at 10:45 a.m. EST, with remarks by Dr. Libby O’Connell, Chief Historian Emeritus for the HIstory Channel and WWI Centennial Commissioner. She will speak about the "Hello Girls", and the imperative of a Congressional Gold Medal for these, the US Army's first women soldiers. This is followed by a wreath ceremony. At 11 a.m. EST a U.S. Navy ship’s bell will toll 21 times in remembrance of all of America’s veterans, and currently serving American military personnel. The ceremony will continue with a moment of silence, followed by a commemorative reading. "Echoing Taps" will then sound from multiple buglers who will play Taps from different corners of the WWI Memorial, concluding the ceremony. About "The Hello Girls" we are honoring this year In 2023, the national Bells of Peace ceremony is recognizing the valuable contributions of "The Hello Girls." These 217 bilingual women served as U.S. Army Signal Corps switchboard operators in WWI. Although their services were invaluable, it took until 1977 for them to receive the veteran status and benefits they were promised. Local Bells of Peace Ceremonies Many hundreds of individuals and organizations around the country and even in Europe have signed up to Toll The Bells of Peace at 11am locally. For the first time, this year even some radio stations are holding local on-air Bells of Peace ceremonies. Sub-Saharan Africa China’s Slowing Economy Will Hit Sub-Saharan Africa’s Growth Photo Credit: peeterv/iStock by Getty Images Read this article in French or Chinese. China has forged deep economic ties with countries in sub-Saharan Africa over the past 20 years, making it the region's largest single country trading partner. China buys one-fifth of the region’s exports—metals, minerals, and fuel—and provides most of the manufactured goods and machinery imported by African countries. However, China’s recovery from the pandemic has slowed recently due to a property downturn and flagging demand for its manufactured goods as global growth has also slowed. This matters for Africa. A one percentage point decline in China’s growth rate could reduce average growth in the region by about 0.25 percentage points within a year, according to the latest Regional Economic Outlook. For oil-exporters, such as Angola and Nigeria, the loss could be 0.5 percentage points on average.

Veteran-Owned Business Partners with FAS to Export its Spices Around the World Retirement – for many – is a time for reconnecting with what you love and who you love. Laura Andersland and David Andersland have spiced up retirement with their seasoning business, Salty Wahine Gourmet Hawaiian Sea Salts.  A seasonings business was a natural decision for Laura Andersland – she began making sea salts at the age of 11 with her Hawaiian-born grandmother, and later gained experience in the finance world that would make opening the business an easy transition. For David Andersland, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a surface warfare officer and a supervisor for the pacific missile range facility marine department. David’s leadership skills and global expertise he gained in the Navy now play an integral role in coordinating Salty Wahine’s international business plans and export sales.  FAS would like to celebrate David Andersland and Salty Wahine, a woman- and veteran-owned business on this year’s Veterans Day. The gap between the wealthiest and everyone else is growing wider. AI is poised to transform the way we do just about everything. And changing populations are creating challenges for developing and advanced economies alike. Solving these challenges will take a lot of work from a lot of people. That’s why we brought together hundreds of leaders from around the world at our Democracy Forum last week to chart a path forward on a whole host of issues – including how to create an economy that works for everyone. Over the last year, we spent time talking to leaders in our network and experts from outside the Foundation about how to create an economy that is more sustainable and more inclusive – one that strengthens democracy instead of weakens it.  Here are some of the ways they’re thinking about the work ahead: Support workers more, not less. Over the last year, we’ve seen successful strikes by everyone from Hollywood writers to health care and auto workers. Now we need to address factors that make it harder to join a union. Unions need to adapt to reach the 100 million workers who aren’t unionized and they need to be more responsive to their members on everything workers care about, including educational advancement, childcare, and the impact of new technology. Build a stronger safety net. As technology reduces the number of hours people need to work, we should explore ideas like universal basic income and guaranteed income that give people who don’t have paid work the time and space to find a new purpose. We should also look into a shorter work week so more people experience the dignity that comes with work.  Look at a new cross-border tax and regulatory regime. If we’re going to change the social safety net, we’re going to have to pay for it with taxes – not just on income, but also on wealth and on corporations. Tax avoidance has become rampant, in part because it’s easy for those corporations and individuals to move their money overseas. Fixing this problem will require global cooperation.  Focus on sustainable growth. Even if we could magically create a system where everybody has what the wealthiest have right now, science has shown that the planet couldn’t take it. The good news is that innovation has driven the price of clean energy down in a pretty remarkable way. Now we need to encourage both more private investment and faster adoption and transition to clean energy. Reimagine corporate responsibility. We need to change the mindset that the only responsibility a corporation has is to increase shareholder value. That’s a bankrupt idea. The truth is that lots of other things – workers, communities, the planet – matter, too. And not just to society at large. They actually matter to companies themselves. It’s up to all of us to grapple with these issues. Vous avez parfaitement dressé en introduction les trois piliers qui doivent nous mobiliser: d'une part, l'engagement humanitaire, la question sécuritaire et la lutte contre le terrorisme, et puis le pilier politique avec la paix. Quelques points simplement, pour indiquer que le Conseil européen, qui rassemble les 27 chefs d'État et de gouvernement, est uni et soudé sur quelques points absolument essentiels. Bien sûr, nous condamnons l'attaque immonde, ignoble qui a été menée par le Hamas, organisation terroriste, contre Israël et sa population. Et bien sûr, nous exigeons que les otages soient libérés sans conditions et le plus vite possible.
