Veteran-Owned Business Partners with FAS to Export its Spices Around the World Retirement – for many – is a time for reconnecting with what you love and who you love. Laura Andersland and David Andersland have spiced up retirement with their seasoning business, Salty Wahine Gourmet Hawaiian Sea Salts.  A seasonings business was a natural decision for Laura Andersland – she began making sea salts at the age of 11 with her Hawaiian-born grandmother, and later gained experience in the finance world that would make opening the business an easy transition. For David Andersland, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a surface warfare officer and a supervisor for the pacific missile range facility marine department. David’s leadership skills and global expertise he gained in the Navy now play an integral role in coordinating Salty Wahine’s international business plans and export sales.  FAS would like to celebrate David Andersland and Salty Wahine, a woman- and veteran-owned business on this year’s Veterans Day. Current Report Past Reports (USDA Economics, Statistics and Market Information System) The following GAIN reports were released on November 8, 2023.  India: Grain and Feed Update On October 27, 2023, India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MOAFW) released Indian crop year (ICY) 2023/2024 (July-June) First Advance Estimate for the kharif (fall harvested) crop. Production is estimated at 148.6 million metric tons (MMT), or 9 MMT lower than last year’s kharif grain crop. FAS New Delhi (Post) is lowering to 130 MMT the MY 2022/2023 rice production estimate premised on tight domestic market supplies, as reflected in firm prices and the Indian government imposing export restrictions. The MY 2023/2024 rice production forecast is lowered to 128 MMT due to below-par 2023 monsoon rains and El Niño conditions arriving in the latter part of 2023. The MY 2023/2024 wheat production forecast is revised lower to 106 MMT based on a continued tight domestic market situation. The production-supply-distribution (PSD) tables for corn, millet, sorghum, and barley have been revised to reflect the official final area and production estimates for the Indian crop year (ICY) 2022/2023 (July-June).   India: India's FSSAI Re-Operationalizes Labeling and Display Regulations On October 17, 2023, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) notified Direction STD/SP-08/A1.2022/N-01-Part (1).   India: India's FSSAI Waives its Clearance Requirement for Imported Food Products Meant for Re-Export  On October 16, 2023, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) published the advisory TIC-C10201/2/2022-IMPORTS-FSSAI. The FSSAI advisory refers to Regulation 7(3) of the Food Safety and Standards (Import) regulations (2017), which states that “unless otherwise specified, Indian Customs need not refer the imported food products to the Food Authority (i.e., FSSAI), if such products are meant for exports as per the extant instructions and export rejected or re-imported articles of food meant for re-export.” The FSSAI has determined to waive its clearance requirement to better enable the ease of doing business with India.   For more information, or for an archive of all FAS GAIN reports, please visit gain.fas.usda.gov/.
