European Heart Journal - Quality of Care and Clinical Outcomes: Sex differences in cardiovascular disease knowledge, risk perception, and preventive care prior to first myocardial infarction

It is well understood that clinical presentation and treatment for myocardial infarction partly differ between women and men. However, less is known about the possible difference in disease knowledge, risk perception and preventive care prior to an acute myocardial infarction. This cross-sectional study included 1,628 individuals who experienced a first myocardial infarction. Two questionnaires were used to assess sex differences. The study found that the knowledge about the disease and risk perception were overall low among women and men. Whilst women had better disease knowledge, risk perception was poorer compared to men. These findings highlight the need for sex-specific strategies to increase disease awareness.
