Speaking ahead of the delegation, chair Barry Andrews (Renew, IE) said: “Mozambique is an increasingly important partner for Europe. We need to work closely together on a range of issues such as development, trade, and energy. I am proud to lead this Development Committee mission, and with my colleagues, look forward to our discussions.” Members of the delegation: | • | Mr Barry ANDREWS, delegation char and chair of the Committee on Development (Renew, IE) | | • | Ms Hilde VAUTMANS, chair of the Delegation to the Africa-EU Parliamentary Assembly (Renew, BE) | | • | Ms Marit MAIJ (S&D, NL) | | • | Mr György HÖLVÉNYI (PfE, HU) | | • | Ms Małgorzata GOSIEWSKA (ECR, PO) |
Background The EU’s long-term partnership with Mozambique is one of the biggest in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the EU committing to invest more than €600 million in the course of the EU’s current 2021-2027 budget. Funding focuses primarily on the green transition, youth empowerment, and governance, peace and a just society. Across 2025 and 2026, and in response to devastating floods that affected over 800,000 people, the EU is expected to provide roughly €41.5 million in humanitarian aid. Northern Mozambique has been subjected to insecurity and violence perpetrated by Islamic State affiliated armed groups, which has displaced over 1.3 million people (mainly women and children) since 2017. |

| Six MEPs representing the Committee on Legal Affairs will travel to the United States next week to engage in transatlantic digital diplomacy. |
On Tuesday 26 May, five members and the Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs will travel to Washington and Boston for a three-day visit to meet their US counterparts and discuss digital policy and regulation, including in the area of copyright and generative artificial intelligence. The US is home to some of the world’s largest technology companies driving the development of generative AI. The EU and the US have taken different approaches to regulating this area, and MEPs want to continue a dialogue with their US counterparts to promote mutual understanding of these respective approaches. MEPs will meet representatives of the US Chamber of Commerce and of the Business Software Alliance before engaging in discussions on intellectual property protection with representatives of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the U.S. Copyright Office. They will also meet senior staffers of the House Committee on the Judiciary, and its Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet before discussing the use of AI determinations, governance processes and copyright issues with representatives of the Department of Justice. In Boston, MEPs will exchange views on business regulation and development with representatives of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Economic Development (EOED) and meet representatives of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office. They will then investigate how AI is used in industrial design to create real world improvements in infrastructure, safety, and sustainability at Autodesk Technology Center, and they will conclude their visit by meeting academics from the Northeastern and Boston universities and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Quote Before the visit, leader of the delegation and Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs, Ilhan Kyuchyuk (Renew, BG) said: "Our visit is an important opportunity to deepen the transatlantic dialogue on artificial intelligence, digital regulation, intellectual property policy, and to understand each other’s positions and priorities better. We will discuss with our interlocutors the evolving global regulatory challenges linked to AI innovation, copyright protection, platform governance, and the future of intellectual property rights. We expect this visit to contribute to improved mutual understanding on the legislative efforts to support innovation, while safeguarding fundamental rights, rights of creators, consumers, and democratic values." Mr Kyuchyuk will be joined by five MEPs for this mission: Tobiasz Bocheński (ECR, PL) Laurence Farreng (Renew, FR) Sergey Lagodinsky (Greens/EFA, DE) Emil Radev (EPP, BG) Marcin Sypniewski (ESN, PL) Background In light of growing transatlantic tensions on digital policy, MEPs aim to engage in “digital diplomacy” to initiate a more informal dialogue with US counterparts regarding AI and EU digital sovereignty. |
