THIS WEEK IN GREEK HISTORY
November 14, 1954
On this day, Yiannis Chryssomallis — Yanni — was born in Kalamata. A self-taught New-Age musician, he developed his own musical shorthand and gained global fame through concerts at historic sites. His Live at the Acropolis performance became one of the best-selling music concert videos of all time.
November 17, 1973
On this day, the Athens Polytechnic Uprising began, a major student-led revolt against Greece’s military junta. It escalated over three days and ended violently when a tank crashed through the Polytechnic gates. November 17 is now a national day of remembrance, marked by ceremonies and an annual march to the U.S. Embassy.
November 19, 1988
On this day, Christina Onassis, heiress and only daughter of Aristotle Onassis, died at 37. After losing her entire immediate family within 29 months, she inherited much of her father’s vast fortune but faced depression and turbulent marriages. She died in Buenos Aires and was buried on Skorpios beside her family.
