Italy commits €360 mln to Greek trains Ekathimerini (May 13) Greece and Italy signed a memorandum of cooperation to overhaul Greek passenger rail services, marking a significant step forward in their bilateral relations, which Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who visited Rome on Monday, said were “tested in the wake of the Tempe tragedy” in February 2023. Under the agreement, Italy’s state-owned railway group Ferrovie dello Stato, which owns Hellenic Train, will invest €360 million to modernize Greek railways. The funding includes the purchase of 23 new trains – eight high-speed intercity and 15 suburban – and the construction of modern maintenance depots. read more
Greek PM Mitsotakis Visits Berlin, Meets with Chancellor Merz National Herald (May 13) Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis travelled to Berlin on Tuesday, where he is holding a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. After the meeting, the two leaders will make statements to the press. In the evening, the Greek premier will speak as guest of honour at the annual conference of the Economic Council Germany, where he will be honoured for the government’s reforms and the recovery of the Greek economy. The ceremony paid tribute to the Greeks who resisted the enemy forces during World War II, honoring their bravery and contributions to the war effort.
