March jobs report reflects widespread growth and economic recovery
The U.S. economy added 916,000 jobs in March, and the unemployment rate edged down to 6.0%. Widespread job growth was led by gains in leisure and hospitality, public and private education, and construction.

Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh joined New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and San Francisco Mayor London Breed in a virtual roundtable discussion this week on how the American Rescue Plan is helping communities fight and recover from the coronavirus.

State mine safety grants
More than $10.5 million in safety training grants is available for states to train miners and mine operators.
Worker.gov/es
Worker.gov, a department site with information on pay, benefits, workplace safety and health and other labor rights issues, is now available in Spanish.
Brookwood-Sago grants
We are making up to $1 million in Brookwood-Sago grant funding available to support education and training that will help mine workers identify, avoid and prevent unsafe working conditions.
Veterans employment pilot
The Veterans’ Employment and Training Service launched a pilot program to help transitioning service members and their spouses succeed in the civilian workforce.
Texas storm grants
The department is providing $3,120,612 to support cleanup, employment and training services after Texas’ severe winter storms.
Enforcement delayed
Our Office of Labor-Management Standards will delay enforcement of its March 2020 final rule on Form T-1 Trust Annual Report filing pending a proposal to rescind the rule.
Restitution for fired seaman
A petroleum carrier and three former and current management officials paid $375,000 to a seaman who was allegedly fired for reporting safety concerns and cooperating in the investigation of a barge explosion that killed his brother.

Leisure and hospitality gains
The industry most impacted by the pandemic is leisure and hospitality, which accounts for about 37% of jobs lost. But the March jobs report showed it gained 280,000 jobs – a step in the right direction.
