Women’s Unemployment Rate Lowest Since 2000 The adult women’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.3% in May, the lowest since 2000. More than 3.4 million jobs have been created since November 2016. “With 223,000 jobs created in May, America’s job creators have now added over 3.4 million jobs since President Trump’s election. That job increase includes more than a million jobs since the President signed his tax cuts package into law five months ago,” said Secretary Acosta. Click here to view more. Ninety-Eight Years Later: Empowerment in the 21st Century Workforce The Women’s Bureau was established on June 5, 1920, to promote the welfare of wage-earning women and to help advance opportunities for gainful employment. At the time, women represented just 21 percent of America’s workforce. Today, that number has increased to 47 percent. Ninety-eight years after our establishment, the Women’s Bureau remains committed to helping women thrive in the 21st century workforce. Training and Supporting Women in Trades in Chicago On May 30, Women’s Bureau Director Dr. Patricia Greene toured the Chicago Women in Trades (CWIT) training facility and met with tradeswomen and apprentices who benefited from and participate in CWIT programs. Director Greene had the opportunity to learn more about CWIT’s priorities and programs around the region, as well as hear about the career paths and training experiences of the women. Director Greene Delivers Keynote Address at the State of Asian Americans in North Texas Forum On May 17, Women’s Bureau Director Dr. Patricia Greene participated in the State of Asian Americans in North Texas forum, organized by Asian 100 in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Director Greene delivered the keynote address, encouraging more women to mentor their employees and help them leverage opportunities for successful careers. National Association of Women Business Owners Holds National Annual Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. On June 18, Women’s Bureau Director Dr. Patricia Greene addressed women business leaders from across the country, who had gathered in Washington, D.C. for the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) National Annual Advocacy Day. Dr. Greene highlighted the historically low unemployment rate—particularly among women—as well as the record-high Small Business Optimism Index.

WASHINGTON—This year, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will celebrate the 242nd anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and our nation’s birthday, by welcoming more than 14,000 new citizens in nearly 175 naturalization ceremonies between June 28 and July 10. The Independence Day activities will kick off with a naturalization ceremony at the Bexar County Courthouse in San Antonio, Texas on June 28. During this event, USCIS Director L. Francis Cissna will deliver congratulatory remarks to 37 new Americans. “The naturalization ceremony marks the end of the journey toward citizenship, just as it marks the start of new lives as American citizens,” said Director Cissna. “We are humbled to be able to share in this moment of pride, joy, and personal triumph.” USCIS is committed to promoting awareness and understanding of citizenship by offering a variety of free citizenship preparation resources for applicants and teachers, including materials like the Establishing Independence (PDF, 2.41 MB) lesson plan in the Citizenship Resource Center. Immigrant-serving organizations can register to receive a free Civics and Citizenship Toolkit to help lawful permanent residents prepare for naturalization. The importance of the Declaration of Independence and Independence Day in the United States is reflected in several places on the naturalization test. Prospective citizens may see them in six different questions on the civics test, including, “What did the Declaration of Independence do?” and “When do we celebrate Independence Day?” To help applicants practice for the civics test, download the USCIS mobile app, USCIS: Civics Test Study Tools, which is currently available for download in the Google Play and iTunes stores. In addition to being the only official USCIS Civics Test application, the app keeps old tests for review, has a game to challenge your civics knowledge, and lists all 100 questions and answers that could be asked in the actual civics test. FTC and Partners Kick off Military Consumer Month 2018 This year’s theme is imposter scams that target military consumers and how to avoid them The Federal Trade Commission and its federal, state and local partners announced today that its month-long recognition of military consumers, Military Consumer Month, kicks off on July 1. This year, the agency and its partners will focus on the fight against imposter scams. “Empowering servicemembers, veterans, and their families is a top priority,” FTC Chairman Joe Simons said. “During Military Consumer Month, we will highlight the agency’s resources to help the military community avoid imposter scams – but our work on behalf of those who serve continues throughout the year.” This year the FTC is focusing on fighting imposter scams. An imposter scam, when a con artist pretends to be someone you trust to convince you to send money or personal information, can take many forms. For instance, imposters may say they are calling from the government or from a business with technical support expertise. Although these scams can happen to anyone, the FTC’s most recent datafound that military consumers reported losing more than $25 million to imposter scams in 2017, with a median loss of $699 – higher than the $500 median loss reported by the general U.S. population. During Military Consumer Month, the FTC will post weekly tips for servicemembers, veterans and their families about some of the most common imposter scams, and participate in Twitter chats and Facebook Live events with its partners. AbbVie Federal Trade Commission Chairman Joe Simons issued the following statement regarding the decision by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in the case FTC v. AbbVie. The court ruled that AbbVie used sham litigation to illegally maintain its monopoly over the testosterone replacement drug Androgel, and ordered $448 million in monetary relief to consumers who were overcharged for Androgel as a result of AbbVie’s conduct. This court order represents the largest monetary award ever in a litigated FTC antitrust case. “This decision is a double victory, both for patients who rely on Androgel and for competition more broadly. It sends a clear signal that pharmaceutical companies can’t use baseless litigation to forestall competition from low-cost generics.” The FTC filed a complaint in federal district court in 2014 charging that AbbVie Inc. and its partner Besins Healthcare Inc. illegally blocking American consumers’ access to lower-cost alternatives to Androgel by filing baseless patent infringement lawsuits against potential generic competitors.
