Today, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, spoke with United States President Donald J. Trump.
The Prime Minister expressed his condolences for the victims of the shooting at the Capital Gazette Newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland.
As he has said in past conversations and in public, the Prime Minister conveyed that Canada has had no choice but to announce reciprocal countermeasures to the steel and aluminum tariffs that the United States imposed on June 1, 2018.
The two leaders agreed to stay in close touch on a way forward.

Today, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, spoke with President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico.
The leaders reaffirmed the close friendship and partnership between Canada and Mexico, and discussed the upcoming Mexican elections on July 1.
The Prime Minister updated the President on Canada’s response to the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs.
The leaders also discussed the North American Free Trade negotiations and agreed to continue working toward a mutually beneficial outcome.
The Prime Minister and President committed to stay in touch.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke by telephone with President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger. President Issoufou congratulated the Prime Minister on the success of the G7 Summit held earlier in June. Prime Minister Trudeau highlighted the positive achievements of the Summit, including the contribution of $3.8 billion to support education for women and girls in fragile or crisis-afflicted states, and the Charlevoix Blueprint for Healthy Oceans, Seas, and Resilient Coastal Communities.
The Prime Minister and President Issoufou discussed the Francophonie and Canada’s support for a second term for Michaëlle Jean as Secretary General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. The two leaders noted the work that Ms. Jean has undertaken in her role to advance key issues for youth and women.
The Prime Minister also conveyed his best wishes to President Issoufou for the African Union Summit this week.

Today, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, spoke by telephone with President Paul Biya of Cameroon, who sent his best wishes for Canada Day.
The two leaders had an in-depth discussion about the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie’s traditions and its future as a vital representative of the French language and Francophone communities. President Biya expressed appreciation for Secretary General Michaëlle Jean’s visit to Cameroon. The Prime Minister reiterated to President Biya that Canada supports the renewal of Michaëlle Jean’s term as Secretary General of the Organisation.
The two leaders agreed to keep in touch.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks with President Patrice Talon of Benin

Today, the Prime Minister spoke by telephone with President Patrice Talon of Benin to express Canada’s support for a second term for Michaëlle Jean as Secretary General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. President Talon remarked that Ms. Jean has been an exceptional representative for Africa at the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, and noted his appreciation for her many contributions to, and her good work within, the Organisation.
The two leaders also discussed advancing the values of democracy and human rights, and in that context, the Prime Minister congratulated President Talon for abolishing the death penalty in Benin. The leaders spoke of the recent progress made in Benin.
The two leaders agreed to talk again at the XVII Francophonie Summit in Erevan, Armenia.
