The United States is today designating senior Hungarian government official Antal Rogan under the Global Magnitsky sanctions program for his involvement in corruption.


During his tenure as a government official, including as Minister in Charge of Orban’s Cabinet Office, Rogan has reportedly orchestrated schemes designed to control strategic sectors of the Hungarian economy. Minister Rogan has played a central role in enabling a system in Hungary that has benefitted himself and his party at the expense of the Hungarian people. Rogan’s activity is emblematic of the broader climate of impunity in Hungary where key elements of the state have been captured by oligarchs and undemocratic actors.


Today’s action implements the U.S. Strategy on Countering Corruption, which identifies state capture as a specific typology of concern. The United States has a national security interest in the vitality and continuity of the democratic institutions of our Allies as well as in protecting democracy globally. This designation is intended to ensure the U.S. financial system plays no role in facilitating the corrupt activities of Antal Rogan.

Farewell Reflection: Export Impact’s Journey Growing up on a farm in Northeast Iowa taught me the values of resilience and innovation—qualities that have guided my work as USDA’s Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs. As I write this final “Export Impact” post, I reflect on the progress we have made in advancing U.S. agricultural exports and driving economic growth. Together, we have demonstrated how trade drives rural economies, supports jobs, and showcases the best of American agriculture on the global stage.  Strengthening Partnerships Through Innovation  The United States has long been a global leader in food and agricultural exports. However, more than 60 percent of our exports are concentrated in just four markets: China, Mexico, Canada, and the EU. In October 2023, USDA launched the $1.2 billion Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP) to reduce market dependency and diversify exports. In May 2024, Secretary Vilsack announced funding totaling $300 million for 66 projects, and late December, USDA unveiled 67 additional projects that will receive another $300 million in funds when all the legal and administrative requirements are satisfied. Through USDA’s $1.2 billion Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP), we are diversifying exports and expanding opportunities—pictured: USDA Under Secretary Alexis Taylor in Vietnam. This program has already helped U.S. producers expand their global trade networks and reach new markets. While we remain committed to our established customers, we are also focused on growth opportunities in regions like Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. These regions are experiencing rising GDPs, expanding middle classes, growing urban populations, and evolving food retail systems—all of which are creating a growing demand for high-quality food and agricultural products.

AHEPA Educational Foundation Announces the John George Tsitsos Scholarship Fund

The AHEPA Educational Foundation is pleased to announce the John George Tsitsos Scholarship Fund, which reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the education of deserving postgraduate students.  Each year, the Order of AHEPA is honored to make these awards available in memory of John George Tsitsos, providing vital financial assistance aimed at easing the burden of tuition costs for selected continuing postgraduate students, fellows research programs, and or Seminarian studies at Hellenic College / Holy Cross Seminary.  The Scholarship Fund is designed to cover all or part of annual tuition expenses for students pursuing postgraduate degrees. Additionally, it offers grants for research initiatives at recognized higher education institutions, thus fostering an environment conducive to academic innovation and scholarly achievement.  The John George Tsitsos Scholarship Fund assists individuals of Greek ethnicity or descent. Supporting this vibrant community not only enriches the lives of the students but also contributes to the collective knowledge and cultural heritage of Greek Americans. The scholarship aims to advance and promote studies in key areas of importance, including but not limited to:  Science: Encouraging exploration and understanding of scientific principles and innovations that can address contemporary challenges.  Mathematics: Supporting the analytical and problem-solving skills essential for various academic and professional fields.  Computers: Enhancing knowledge and expertise in computer science and information technology, a field critical for modern advancements.  Technology: Fostering a deeper understanding of technological applications and their implications across different sectors.  Physics: Promoting studies that delve into the fundamental principles governing the physical universe, paving the way for new insights and discoveries.  Medical Research: Supporting research that improves healthcare outcomes and advances medical sciences is crucial for society's well-being.  Seminary Students at Hellenic College/Holy Cross Seminary: Assisting future leaders of the clergy who will serve and guide the Greek Orthodox community.   The AHEPA Educational Foundation encourages prospective candidates to take advantage of the John George Tsitsos Scholarship Fund as an opportunity to further their education and contribute to their fields of study. ECONOMIC GROWTH To Restore Global Growth, Ease Barriers for Entrepreneurs: Georgieva (Credit: IMF Photo) If there is one economic challenge that cuts across most of the globe, it is growth. Or rather the shortage of it, writes IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in an article in the Washington Post. “With the ups and downs of the global economy over the past three decades, our five-years-ahead projection for world growth has dropped to its lowest level since the early 1990s, at a modest annual average rate of roughly 3 percent,” says Georgieva, noting most of this slowdown is because of slowing productivity growth. “This is a huge concern. Growth fuels economic life—it gives people their jobs and incomes, societies their vibrancy, and governments their financial strength. In a tightly interconnected world, slow growth in one place can easily turn into a problem elsewhere,” she continues. “The challenge requires us to double down on economic policies that we know can durably enhance growth prospects.”
