GROUP OF TWENTY Georgieva Pushes For Stronger Global Safety Net (Credit: @KGeorgieva/X) IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Sunday called on countries to strengthen global financial safety nets at the end of a meeting of the Group of Twenty in India. The IMF has injected $1 trillion in reserves and liquidity since the start of the pandemic through lending to nearly 100 countries and a historic allocation of special drawing rights, Georgieva said in a statement at the close of the world leaders summit in New Delhi. “To make the global economy stronger and more resilient in a more shock-prone world, it is vital to reach an agreement to increase the IMF’s quota resources before the end of the year and secure the needed resources for the Fund’s interest-free support to the poorest countries through the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust.” The managing director also called on countries to raise their ambition to reduce carbon emissions ahead of the United Nations’ COP28 meeting in November. “G20 members must lead by example in delivering on the promises of $100 billion per year for climate finance, supported by strengthening the multilateral development banks.” Watch Kristalina Georgieva speak to CNBC about why international institutions must work together and why countries shouldn’t be excluded from economic corridors. Αγαπητέ Nikolai Denkov, σε ευχαριστώ για τα καλά σου λόγια, είναι τιμή και προνόμιο να έχουμε τη Βουλγαρία ως τιμώμενη χώρα στη φετινή Διεθνή Έκθεση Θεσσαλονίκης.

Κυρίες και κύριοι συνάδελφοι στην κυβέρνηση και στη Βουλή, κ. Περιφερειάρχη, κ. Δήμαρχε, κυρίες και κύριοι, αγαπητοί προσκεκλημένοι,

Για μια ακόμα χρονιά, η Θεσσαλονίκη γίνεται σημείο απολογισμού της εθνικής πορείας και γίνεται ταυτόχρονα και αφετηρία μιας νέας διαδρομής.

Μόνο που φέτος αυτή η Διεθνής Έκθεση, κ. Πρόεδρε, όπως είπατε και εσείς, διεξάγεται σε μία ιδιαίτερα δύσκολη συγκυρία για την πατρίδα μας. Θα ήθελα ειλικρινά αυτή η εισαγωγή να επικεντρωνόταν στην τεράστια επιτυχία, στην κατάκτηση της επενδυτικής βαθμίδας ύστερα από 14 χρόνια. Θα ήθελα να αναφέρεται περισσότερο στη δεύτερη θέση στην ανάπτυξη που πέτυχε η Ελλάδα το τελευταίο τρίμηνο σε όλη την Ευρώπη.

Ελένη Κισσάβου (Ελευθερία Λάρισας): Καλησπέρα σας, κ. Πρόεδρε. Κατ’ αρχήν να σας ευχαριστήσω που μας δίνετε τη δυνατότητα να έχουμε την πρώτη ερώτηση στη σημερινή συνέντευξη Τύπου.

Οι Θεσσαλοί έχουν υποστεί μεγάλες, ανυπολόγιστες ζημιές και περιμένουν τη μέγιστη προσοχή της πολιτείας. Γνωρίζουμε ότι το φαινόμενο που ξέσπασε στη Θεσσαλία ήταν πολύ έντονο και ακραίο, όμως για την αντιμετώπισή του δέχεστε κριτική στα εξής: γιατί δεν υπήρχε εγκαίρως προειδοποίηση των κατοίκων πέραν μιας γενικής αποστολής του «112», όταν μάλιστα οι επιστήμονες είχαν ενημερώσει την κυβέρνηση γι’ αυτό που έρχεται; Γιατί χάθηκαν πολλές ώρες μέχρι να ενεργοποιηθεί ο στρατός; Γιατί ελικόπτερα που υποτίθεται ότι ήταν παροπλισμένα, έτσι τουλάχιστον είχε ανακοινωθεί, τα είδαμε μετά να πετούν;

Και να πάμε λίγο και στην επόμενη μέρα. Πότε προβλέπεται να γίνει η αποκατάσταση, των βασικών υποδομών τουλάχιστον; Ποιο είναι το σχέδιό σας για να κλείσει η Θεσσαλία τις πληγές της, μάλιστα με το ρόλο που έχει για την εθνική οικονομία της Ελλάδας;

Και τέλος, κ. Πρόεδρε, χρειάζεται χρόνος για να αποκατασταθεί ο παραγωγικός ιστός, πώς και πότε εκτιμάτε ότι μπορεί να κλείσει αυτό το κενό; Ευχαριστώ πολύ.

Κυριάκος Μητσοτάκης: Σας ευχαριστώ, κα Κισσάβου, που κάνατε πολλές ερωτήσεις. Θα επιχειρήσω να τις απαντήσω όλες, ξεκινώντας όμως από την εισαγωγική σας παρατήρηση ότι το καιρικό φαινόμενο το οποίο κληθήκαμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε στη Θεσσαλία ήταν πράγματι πρωτοφανές και, θα έλεγα, έξω από τα δεδομένα και τα μοντέλα τα οποία κρίνουμε πάντα με γνώμονα προηγούμενα αντίστοιχα περιστατικά.

Hi there, this is Zahrah Hill, a plumber on the crew building the Obama Presidential Center. Growing up here on the South Side of Chicago, my mom worked as an electrician through Chicago Women in Trades (CWIT), and my siblings and I were always helping out with small jobs. A decade later I signed up for my first CWIT class, certain I would be an electrician just like my mom. That all changed when I learned about plumbing and saw the strong women in this field. Continuing on that path was the best decision of my life because it led me to work as a plumber on the Obama Presidential Center construction site.   The effort to include the diverse Chicago community in this build has meant that people who look like me and come from backgrounds like mine were recruited and hired to work on an incredibly large-scale project that will have an impact for decades. I'm forever grateful for that opportunity.   The Obama Presidential Center is going to be such a great resource for the neighborhood. I know people will come to the Center not only because it has President Obama’s name on it, but because it will be a place where children can go after school and a place with resources for adults. I look forward to the day when I can say to my children, “Come, look what your mama did.”   Because of you, the Obama Presidential Center is going to be around to serve and provide for the community long after I'm gone. That means that my children, my grandchildren, my great-grandchildren, and even my great-great-grandchildren will visit the Center. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Kerry’s Travel to Kenya and Romania

Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry will travel to Nairobi, Kenya, and Bucharest, Romania, September 4-7 to advance shared objectives on climate and clean energy.

In Nairobi, Secretary Kerry will participate in the Africa Climate Summit , where he will engage with leaders, ministers, and civil society representing countries from Africa in the effort to respond to the climate crisis. At the Summit, Secretary Kerry will highlight U.S. efforts as part of President Biden’s Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience (PREPARE) initiative to help half a billion people in developing countries, especially in Africa, adapt to climate impacts this decade. He will also highlight the role that carbon market initiatives, including the Energy Transition Accelerator (ETA), can play in catalyzing private capital and accelerating the clean energy transition in developing countries.

The Eurogroup gave its support to the candidacy of Piero Cipollone to become a new member of the European Central Bank's Executive Board, replacing the outgoing member of the ECB's Executive Board, Fabio Panetta. It also took stock of progress made with the ESM treaty ratification and was briefed on ongoing technical work by the ESM.
