Annual defense expenditure has now reached $10.5 billion, up from approximately $8.5 billion in 2024, underscoring the rapid pace of Vietnam's military investment. This growth reflects Vietnam’s strategic priority to strengthen maritime security, develop more capable air and naval forces, and reduce reliance on traditional suppliers as regional dynamics evolve. Maritime domain awareness remains Vietnam’s top defense focus, encompassing air, surface, and subsurface capabilities. The Government of Vietnam has emphasized the protection of its 2,000 mile coastline, maritime sovereignty, and marine economy through sustained investment in anti access/area denial systems, surveillance platforms, and high speed offshore patrol vessels. Over the past decade, both the Navy and Air Defense–Air Force have advanced modernization initiatives to address gaps in their ability to safeguard Vietnam’s maritime interests. As part of a broader diversification strategy, Vietnam is actively pursuing new partners, updated platforms, and modern technologies across air, naval, cyber, and electronic warfare domains. U.S.–Vietnam defense ties have expanded since the lifting of the U.S. arms embargo in 2016. Vietnam has acquired or received U.S. patrol boats, UAVs, trainer aircraft, and high endurance cutters, alongside cooperation in cyber defense, maritime security, peacekeeping training, military medicine, and English language instruction. Growing openness to U.S. platforms—combined with Vietnam’s interest in sustainment, training, and selective co production—creates new commercial pathways for U.S. defense suppliers.
