Japan Contributes JPY90.1 Million to Advance Clean Energy Cooperation Across APEC
Issued by the APEC SecretariatJapan has contributed JPY90.1 million to support regional cooperation on clean, resilient and efficient energy solutions as rising electricity demand from digitalization and artificial intelligence places new pressure on energy systems across the Asia-Pacific.
The contribution was formalized in a memorandum of understanding signed on the sidelines of the Second APEC Senior Officials' Meeting in Shanghai by Tamura Hideyasu, Japan's Senior Official for APEC, and Eduardo Pedrosa, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat.
"As economies across the region pursue both digital and energy transitions, ensuring access to reliable and sustainable energy has become increasingly urgent," said Tamura.
"Japan remains committed to practical cooperation through APEC, helping economies strengthen energy security, expand energy solutions and build capacity for the future," he added.
The Sub-Fund for Energy Efficiency, Low-Carbon and Energy Resiliency Measures supports cleaner, more robust energy systems across the region. Funding will help advance clean energy technologies, protect disaster-prone communities and broaden access in rural and remote areas.
The contribution also advances progress toward APEC's energy goals, including a 45 percent reduction in energy intensity by 2035, doubling renewable energy by 2030 and improving energy access across developing economies.
"Energy systems across the region are changing rapidly, creating new demands as economies pursue growth and innovation," said Pedrosa.
"Since its establishment, the sub-fund has grown into being a cornerstone of APEC's clean energy cooperation, driving more than a decade of collective action across the Asia-Pacific. This contribution will help translate cooperation into projects and initiatives that deliver tangible benefits for communities and businesses," he concluded.
Established in 2010 as a fund focused on Low-Carbon Model Town projects, the sub-fund has since expanded to address broader priorities including energy resilience, energy access for underserved communities and the evolving demands that digital transformation places on energy systems.
