Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Azerbaijan Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. Secretary Rubio commended the Azerbaijani government’s shipments of fuel to Armenia, an important gesture that demonstrates Azerbaijan’s continued commitment to the historic peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan advanced by President Trump at the White House summit on August 8, 2025. The Secretary and Foreign Minister touched on other confidence-building measures to further advance peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus region and lauded positive developments in U.S.-Azerbaijani relations.

Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker will travel to Abuja, Nigeria; Muscat, Oman; Manama, Bahrain; and Rome, Italy from January 21-29.
In Nigeria, the Under Secretary will serve as the head of delegation for the U.S.-Nigeria Joint Working Group and will support the administration’s efforts to protect Christian communities, counter terrorism, and expand U.S. investment opportunities.
In Oman and Bahrain, the Under Secretary will lead two separate strategic dialogues and advance cooperation across a range of security, economic, and cultural interests.
In Italy, the Under Secretary will engage with counterparts on the administration’s global priorities such as the Russia-Ukraine war, Venezuela, and peace in the Middle East. She will also meet with UN agencies in Rome, including the World Food Program and the Food and Agriculture Organization, to discuss accountability and oversight for U.S.-funded assistance, as well as creating new agricultural trade opportunities for American farmers.

SECRETARY RUBIO: Thank you very much. It’s an honor to be here today. It’s an honor to serve as the Secretary of State during a historic presidency. And it’s a historic presidency because the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, is someone who is not limited by what others say is possible or what others say is impossible. He’s not limited by some of the things that have happened in the past, and he’s willing to talk to or engage with anyone in the interest of peace, always putting the American people and our national security first but understanding that, in the world that we share with so many others, peace is paramount to all of us.
We are here today because of President Trump’s vision. If we go back just a few months ago, people thought what was happening in Gaza was impossible to solve – 28 hostages that were dead, others that were still living, all these hostages that were being held – no one thought that that would ever come to a resolution without more fighting and more bloodshed along the way. In fact, frankly, many thought it was intractable. And sadly, many of the institutions that have served us well in many cases for the last 70 years were unable to do anything about it. But President Trump had the vision and the courage to dream the impossible, to believe that it was doable, and to pursue it with all of his heart.
And he was in that capacity assisted by an extraordinary team, and I think both Jared and Steve deserve a tremendous amount of credit – Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff – for all the work they’ve put in. (Applause.) And all of our partners here today. And now we have this Board of Peace, who I believe possibilities are endless, obviously with a focus first and foremost on making sure that this peace deal in Gaza becomes enduring. And I know this President has this as his highest priority and will give it everything he has to make sure this is successful.
I also want to acknowledge the extraordinary leaders that are here today. This is not just a Board of Peace. This is a board of action, just like President Trump is a president of action. A lot of times people like to give speeches. I’ve been to many of these forums, and they’re not useless and they’re not – not – they have utility in many cases. But oftentimes in international affairs, we often find ourselves at events where people are reading these scripted statements, these strongly worded letters that they put out, but no action, nothing happens. This is a group of leaders that are about action, and the President of the United States is a president of action, of getting things done.
And today is the beginning of that, of a new era and a new stage that we think is so important as a model to the rest of the world of what is possible. And clearly the focus is right now on Gaza, on making sure that the plan that’s about to be presented to you here today – this vision for the future of Gaza, this vision for the future of the region – is not just possible and promising, it is our destiny if we put the time and the effort that it requires, as I know this board will do. But I also think it will serve as an example of what’s possible in other parts of the world. Without losing focus on what’s before us now, this is what’s possible for other places and other conflicts that seem impossible to solve right now.
So I want to – on behalf of the United States, on behalf of the team that worked so hard on this – thank every single one of the leaders that are here today and all of the countries that have committed to joining, and many others who are going to join. Others either are not in town today or they have to go through some procedure internally in their own – in their country because of constitutional limitations, but others will join. Many want to be a part of this effort because it is going to be a successful effort, and you see it reflected here today among countries of different backgrounds, from different parts of the world – majority-Christian some, majority-Muslim others – who’ve come together – in fact, former adversaries who have joined here as part of this Board of Peace.
And all was possible – and I want to acknowledge this again – because of the vision and the drive of the President of the United States. So thank you all for joining us here today. We appreciate it very much. (Applause.)

Here’s what happened at State this week.
The Trump Administration marked its year of promises made and kept.
The Board of Peace charter is ratified to bring peace to Gaza.

A Year of Promises Made and Promises Kept

In his first year, President Trump has prioritized national security, economic growth, and global leadership.
The Trump Administration has kept America safe by revoking 100,000 visas from foreign nationals and signing seven Safe Third Country agreements to speed deportations. To combat drug cartels and the opioid crisis, the administration designated eight major cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, empowering law enforcement, and leading to thousands of arrests.
The Trump Administration has kept America strong by capturing outlawed dictator and narcoterrorist Nicolás Maduro. In addition, the administration has designated Muslim Brotherhood chapters and radical Antifa groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
The administration also responded rapidly to natural disasters, delivering humanitarian aid to the Caribbean after Hurricane Melissa. The U.S. expanded liquefied natural gas exports to dozens of countries and is on track to double LNG production capacity by 2029, strengthening global energy security.
Internationally, President Trump brokered eight historic peace agreements and implemented President Trump’s Peace Plan in Gaza.
At the June 2025 NATO Summit, allies agreed to double defense spending targets, significantly increasing NATO’s resources and enhancing its ability to deter conflict.
Board of Peace to Bring Stability to Gaza

At The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Trump signed and ratified the Board of Peace charter on January 21, officially making it an international organization. The Board of Peace will oversee Gaza’s transition from conflict to peace.
"Together we are in a position to have an incredible chance ... to end decades of suffering, stop generations of hatred and bloodshed, and forge a beautiful, everlasting, and glorious peace for that region,” said President Trump at the Board of Peace Charter Announcement.
Chaired by President Trump, the Board’s Executive Board includes leaders in diplomacy, development, and economic strategy, each managing key portfolios for Gaza’s stabilization.
"This is a group of leaders that are about action and the President of the United States is a president of action, of getting things done,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, “and today is the beginning of that, of a new era and a new stage we think is so important as a model to the rest of the world of what is possible."
President Trump Delivers Remarks in Davos

President Trump delivered a major address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he reaffirmed America’s leadership and the importance of its relationship with Europe.
Following his speech, President Trump held a bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the forum, after which the President announced a “framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and… the entire Arctic Region.”
The President emphasized that the deal will be good for the United States and all NATO nations.
The U.S. Will Bid for World Expo 2035
President Trump announced January 22 that the United States would be bidding for the World Expo 2035 to be held in Florida.
The World Expo is a once-every-five-year event that brings together nations, private sector leaders, and policymakers to foster international cooperation on trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
"Miami Expo 2035 can be the next big milestone in our new Golden Age of America," President Trump said in a Truth Social post.
To advance the bid, President Trump appointed Miami native Secretary Rubio to coordinate with international partners and prospective host city stakeholders to advance the bid, and reinforce the U.S. commitment to global leadership.

The United States sanctioned Hamas and covert funding networks, including six Gaza-based organizations supporting Hamas’s military wing.
In support of the people of Iran, the United States is sanctioning several Iranian security officials and designating the notorious Fardis Prison, as well as 18 individuals and entities tied to Iran’s “shadow banking” networks.
The United States designated several networks giving financial support to Iranian regime-backed Houthi terrorists.
The United States withdrew from the World Health Organization.
