December 11, 1950
On this day, Christina Onassis, daughter of Aristotle Onassis, was born in New York. After a turbulent personal life and the loss of her entire immediate family within 29 months, she inherited half her father’s fortune, with the other half funding the Alexander Onassis Foundation. She died in 1988, leaving one daughter, Athina.
December 13, 1959
On this day, Archbishop Makarios III became Cyprus’ first president as the island gained independence. Born Michael Mouskos, he rose from village origins to church leadership, championed enosis, survived exile and assassination attempts, and led Cyprus until 1977. He died in August of that year.

December 16, 1974
On this day, Kostas Varnalis, the Greek journalist, writer, and poet, died at 90. Born in Pyrgos, he studied in Athens and Paris, where World War I and the Russian Revolution shaped his worldview. Labeled a Marxist and dismissed from teaching, he turned to journalism, which he pursued until his death.
