Journalism Science Alliance: applications are officially open
The first call for applications for the Journalism Science Alliance (JSA) is now open!
€1,000,000 to strengthen investigative journalism based on science.
The European Journalism Centre, in partnership with NOVA University Lisbon, has launched the first call for the JSA programme, supporting investigative journalism backed by science.

Grants up to €50,000
Training & mentorship
Collaboration between media and academia
A cross-border peer network
Who can apply?
Teams with at least one media outlet (lead) and one research/academic organisation, based in a European country. Freelancers and scientists can join teams, but not lead.

The Journalism Science Alliance at a glance
This is the first of two calls in the Journalism Science Alliance programme, which will award €2,000,000 in grants over two years. The programme will support up to 8 months of science-backed investigative reporting. Selected teams will additionally receive training, mentorship, and will join a cross-border network.

Here’s a peek at where we were and what we did last month:
9 May: Creative Europe Day at at H’ART Museum in Amsterdam
Our Director Lars Boering joined Menno Weijs and Lorenzo Gerbi for one of the panels of the event: “How can European journalism thrive without using Big Tech?”
15 May: YoCoJoin Final Conference in Brussels
Our Director of Programme Vera Penêda took part in a panel with Ivana Jelaca, Ulco Mes, Jana Jacić, and Maria Krasinski, exploring the question: “Young journalists in local media: overwhelmed by funding, policy, and sustainability?”
20-28 May: Learning sessions: reporting on nuclear weapons
In partnership with the Stanley Center for Peace and Security, we hosted two free online sessions featuring top journalists and nuclear policy experts, exploring why and how to cover nuclear weapons beyond the breaking news cycle.
27 May: Fireside chat with Huis voor de Journalistiek
We welcomed Jesse Beentjes from Huis voor de Journalistiek, a fresh, forward-thinking initiative experimenting with how journalism can evolve for the new generation of media makers.
