The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Lebanese Heritage Month:
“Today, as we mark the beginning of Lebanese Heritage Month, we celebrate Canada’s vibrant Lebanese community.
“Since Lebanese immigrants first arrived in Canada nearly two centuries ago, the diaspora has shaped our country for the better. Lebanese Canadians are some of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs. Innovators in science, medicine, and technology. Community leaders who keep our country inclusive and welcoming. From city halls to convocation ceremonies, from textbooks to tech summits, Lebanese Canadian success stories can be seen across our communities.
“This year, Lebanese Heritage Month comes at a particularly painful time for Lebanese communities across Canada and around the world. More than a million people are estimated to be displaced from their homes in Lebanon due to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Innocent civilians, including children, have been killed. There must be peace.
“So far this year, the Government of Canada has announced more than $56 million to help trusted humanitarian partners, including the Canadian Red Cross and the Humanitarian Coalition, provide food, water, emergency health care, protection services, and other life-saving assistance to the people of Lebanon. We continue to call for an immediate ceasefire, de-escalation across the region, and stabilization of the Israel-Lebanon border, and we reaffirm Canada’s longstanding support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and stability. Canada stresses the need for a diplomatic solution along the Blue Line, consistent with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I invite Canadians to learn more about Lebanese Canadians and their contributions to our communities. In these painful times, we stand in solidarity with Lebanese Canadians as we mark Lebanese Heritage Month.”

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement to mark Bandi Chhor Divas:
“Today, we join Sikh communities in Canada and around the world to celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas.
“Also known as the Day of Liberation, the Sikh festival of Bandi Chhor Divas commemorates the release from prison of the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.
“To mark this day, families and friends will come together to share feasts, enjoy fireworks, and illuminate their homes, neighbourhoods, and temples with candles and lamps. This is also a time for spiritual reflection that will be marked by prayers and the reading of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib – the holy book of Sikhism.
“Bandi Chhor Divas is an opportunity to celebrate Sikh Canadians. It is also a reminder of courage and resilience in the face of hardship – values at the heart of Sikhism. To the nearly 800,000 Canadians of Sikh heritage across the country: we will always protect your rights and freedoms. Your right to practise your religion freely and without intimidation is exactly that – a fundamental right.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish all those celebrating a happy Bandi Chhor Divas.”

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Diwali:
“Today, we join millions of people in Canada and around the world to celebrate Diwali.
“Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil, of knowledge over ignorance. On this day, families will gather to pray at mandirs, exchange gifts, and take part in festivities across the country. Homes will be lit with candles and diyas. Fireworks will embrace the sky. This is a holiday of hope, and the bright lights of Diwali encourage us all to defeat darkness and find purpose.
“Diwali in Canada would not be possible without our incredible Indo-Canadian community. Indo-Canadians represent the best of Canada – as artists and entrepreneurs, as doctors and teachers, as leaders in business, community, and culture. On Diwali, we celebrate them and the light they carry across Canada’s communities.
“Diwali is especially important to Hindu Canadians – one of Canada’s largest and most diverse diasporas. In November, as we mark Hindu Heritage Month in Canada, let us join the community and celebrate. We will always stand with Hindu Canadians to ensure their safety and security so they can freely and proudly practise their religion.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I wish everyone celebrating a very happy Diwali. May the Festival of Lights bring us joy, happiness, and prosperity.”

Today, we, the Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7), have reached a consensus on how to deliver approximately US$50 billion in Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) loans to Ukraine.
These loans will be serviced and repaid by future flows of extraordinary revenues stemming from the immobilization of Russian Sovereign Assets, in line with G7 respective legal systems and international law. The loan proceeds will be disbursed through multiple channels to support Ukraine’s budgetary, military and reconstruction assistance, as consistent with all applicable law and G7 members’ respective legal systems. Our aim is to begin disbursing the funds by the end of the year.
We express our utmost appreciation for the timely implementation of this historic G7 Leaders’ decision by the Finance Ministers, who have agreed on a technical solution ensuring consistency, coordination, fair distribution of lending, and solidarity among all G7 partners. We are particularly grateful to the European Union and its Member States for their constructive engagement towards this remarkable result.
Today’s announcement confirms that the G7 fulfills the commitment they made in June at the Apulia G7 Leaders’ Summit. Russian illegal and unprovoked aggression has caused untold harm to the people of Ukraine and to global peace and security. We will not tire in our resolve to give Ukraine the support it needs to prevail. Russia must end its illegal war of aggression and pay for the damage it has caused to Ukraine in line with international law.
The G7 remains steadfast in its solidarity to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom, and its recovery and reconstruction. With the large amount of financing from the ERA loans to meet its pressing need, we have once again made clear our unwavering commitment to stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes. Time is not on President Putin’s side.
