The following GAIN reports were released on November 7, 2024. _______
Canada: Fresh Deciduous Fruit AnnualCanadian apple production is forecast to see a five percent growth in MY 2024/25, driven by a larger Quebec crop and average Ontario crop. Pear production is forecast to be down nine percent on 2023 numbers as a result of cold impacts to the crop in British Columbia. A larger Ontario crop will only partially offset losses in British Columbia. Production of table grapes is forecast to decline sixteen percent due to adverse weather events impacting Ontario and British Columbia. Imports of apples and pears are forecast to be down slightly in MY 2024/25 driven by shifting consumer preferences and a reduction in U.S. production. Exports of apples are forecast up eight percent on the larger forecasted crop. Imports of table grapes are forecast two percent higher.

_______
Argentina: Fresh Deciduous Fruit Annual
Post projects a slight increase in fresh apple production in Marketing Year (MY) 2024/25, forecast at 488,000 metric tons (MT), while pear production is expected to decrease to 655,000 MT from the previous year. Favorable weather conditions, with mild temperatures and scattered frosts, have not significantly affected crop development to date. Apple exports are anticipated to increase to 82,000 MT, whereas pear imports are projected to remain stable at approximately 330,000 MT, consistent with prior years. The number of fruit producers in the country continues to shrink, driven by escalating production costs, persistently low fruit prices, and increased competition for land from other sectors.
Cambodia: Grain and Feed Update
Cambodian rice farmers shifted production in 2023/24 toward short-term dry-season rice and used more inputs, resulting in higher production. Rice exports are revised higher with strong demand from neighboring countries and expansion to new export markets. Despite global prices declining in recent weeks, Cambodian exports are not expected to be negatively impacted in MY 2024/25 due to the differences in varieties.
China: China's Bovine Market Overview and Distribution Channels
The United States has become a leading supplier of beef products to China since its reentry into the market in 2017. This report reviews the development of the beef market, analyzes prospects, discusses potential opportunities, and examines in detail the distribution channels of beef products in the China market.
China: Fresh Deciduous Fruit Annual
Post estimates China’s production of apples, pears, and table grapes to increase moderately to 48 MMT, 20.2 MMT, and 14.2 MMT, respectively, in MY 2024/25. Substituted by domestic counterparts, grape imports are expected to further decline. Apple imports are likely to rebound, as diverse varieties on the world market keep attracting Chinese consumers. Fruit exports will continue increasing to neighboring countries given improved quality and competitive prices of fruit and logistical costs. U.S. market share in China’s highly competitive fruit market continues to backslide, because of advancements in domestic production and quality and competition with countercyclical producers with tariff rate advantages. It is essential to reinforce the luxury branding of U.S. fruit products and to invest in marketing campaigns that introduce new varietals.
China: Oilseeds and Products Update
Soybean production for MY 24/25 is forecast slightly up at 19.9 million metric tons (MMT) based on higher yield and a planted area of 9.95 million hectares (Mha). There were no significant adverse weather events reported in the Northeast region as of mid-October. Post raised its forecast for MY 24/25 peanut production to 18.4 MMT from the previous report’s 18.1 MMT on higher yields.
Denmark: Bluetongue Disease Reaches Three Nordic Countries
After the 2023 outbreak of bluetongue disease in Europe, the bluetongue virus (BTV-3) has now spread to three Nordic countries. Denmark encountered the first case of bluetongue disease on August 9, Norway on September 6, and Sweden on September 12. Bluetongue disease affects sheep, goats, and cattle. Sheep and goats face higher mortality rates than cows, but sick cows produce less milk than normal.
Finland: United States Tall Oil Exports to the Nordics Surge
In 2023, the value of U.S. tall oil exports to Finland and Sweden rose to nearly a quarter of a billion dollars. This is mainly due to a surge of the price of tall oil as the demand as feedstock for the production of advanced biofuels is increasing while the availability is limited. Because Finland and Sweden will further expand their biofuel production capacity in the next five years, their import demand for tall oil is forecast to grow accordingly.
Japan: Dairy and Products Annual
FAS/Tokyo projects that Japan's fluid milk production will decline in 2025, primarily due to a decrease in the milking cow population anticipated from 2024. However, production of butter and non-fat dry milk is expected to remain steady, supported by a surplus of milk resulting from weak demand for drinking milk. Butter demand, particularly in the confectionery sector, is bolstered by tourism, leading FAS/Tokyo to predict an increase in butter imports for both 2024 and 2025. While cheese consumption remains stable, it is not robust enough to drive significant production growth.
South Africa: Fresh Deciduous Fruit Annual
The production of apples, pears and table grapes is forecast to improve in MY 2024/25 from MY 2023/24 based on the cold, wet winter of 2024 and new trees coming into production. With improved fruit quality, deciduous fruit exports are forecast to increase in spite of continued equipment shortages and breakdowns at the Port of Cape Town. South Africa imports little deciduous fruit due to sufficient domestic production. The United States does not have market access in South Africa for pears and table grapes, and has market access only for apples from areas free from Rhagoletis pomonella.
South Korea: Fresh Deciduous Fruit Annual
Korea’s fresh pear production is projected to rise by 10.2 percent to 202,000 metric tons (MT) in marketing year (MY) 2024/25, helped by favorable weather and lower incidences of diseases and pests compared to the previous year. This production level is close to the five-year average, with further yield recovery hampered by weather challenges (heat, tropical nights, etc.) that caused sunburn, cracking, and reduced fruit size. Price inflation remained high for fresh fruit through much of 2024, but has stabilized since the harvest of pears and other domestic fruit. Exports are set to expand by 33 percent, reaching 25,000 metric tons, primarily due to higher production levels. Production in MY 2023/24 has been revised down to 183,300 MT based on official data confirming the full extent of yield losses from adverse weather throughout 2023.

_______
Algeria: Dairy and Products Annual
Algeria's dairy sector remains a priority focus for the government. Currently, Algeria is among the global leaders in milk powder imports. In 2024, Post forecasts Algeria's imports of milk powder to line up with 2023 and 2022 levels. Meanwhile, imports of butter and cheese will continue to decrease in 2024. As Algeria's dairy production expands, Post believes there will be ample space for bovine genetics and live cattle investments and trade. In 2023, USDA secured market access for U.S. bovine genetics; market access for U.S. dairy breeding cattle is currently under discussion with the Ministry of Agriculture.
Canada: Food Service - Hotel Restaurant Institutional Annual
Canada continues to be the largest export market for U.S. consumer-oriented products. In 2023, U.S. consumer-oriented exports to Canada reached $20.2 billion, representing 25 percent of the total value of U.S. consumer-oriented exports worldwide. As a mature market, Canada offers sophisticated distribution chains, warehousing options, and a logistics network for U.S. companies, ensuring shipments arrive efficiently. In 2023, food service sales amounted to $85 billion, both commercial and non-commercial food service sales, reflecting a 10 percent increase from the previous year.
Egypt: Fresh Deciduous Fruit Annual
Egyptian table grape production is forecast to increase to 1.59 million metric tons (MMT) in marketing year (MY) 2024/25 (October 2024 through September 2025). Egyptian exports of table grapes are forecast up by 5.7 percent (185,000 MT) due to new varieties which have improved production and quality. Furthermore, as a result of the August 12, 2024 Official Statement from Egypt’s Central Administration for Plant Quarantine (CAPQ), it has made considerable contribution to both production and trade.
Indonesia: Dairy and Products Annual
The signature campaign promise of the newly sworn-in Prabowo administration, the Free Nutritious Meals Program, will be a large driver of increased demand over the next five years as the program aims to provide milk to over 82 million beneficiaries daily by 2029. Indonesian 2024 dairy demand is projected to rebound back to 2022 levels at 4.2 million metric tons and increase to 5.3 million metric tons in 2025 due to the additional drinking milk consumption increase to meet the Government of Indonesia's 2025 target for the Free Nutritious Meals Program. The new administration will also be actively pushing for increased milk production through the importation of a target 1 million dairy cattle from various countries over the next five years.
Indonesia: Indonesia Confirms Extension for Mandatory Halal Certification for Imported Food and Beverage Products and Annulment of Apostille Requirement
As FAS Jakarta previously reported, the Government of Indonesia granted an extension until, “no later than October 17, 2026” for imported food and beverage products to come into compliance with Indonesia’s mandatory halal certification requirements. This allows most U.S. food and beverage products to be exported to Indonesia without halal certification during the length of the extension. The exception is meat, meat products, and dairy products, which remain subject to halal certification requirements under a separate law. Based on conversations with Indonesia’s halal product assurance authority (BPJPH), FAS Jakarta anticipates the extension will likely be granted for the full two years. In addition, the previous requirement to get halal certificates apostilled was removed, saving U.S. exporters an onerous and bureaucratic step. Please note some of the guidance within this report is based on information gathered informally and may be subject to change.
Israel: Food Processing Ingredients
With over 2,500 facilities, the Israeli food processing sector is an important player in the domestic economy. In 2022, Israeli food processors' annual revenue stood at $23.19 billion. With limited land, resources, and a growing population, demand for ingredients by the Israeli food processing sector is high. However, with the regional conflict and the recent adoption of EU standards for agricultural products, Israeli processor and importers must navigate a challenging macroeconomic environment.
Mexico: FAIRS Country Report Annual
This document provides an overview of major Mexican agricultural and food-product laws and regulations, as well as related import standards and regulations. Some products may be subject to regulatory oversight by several different Government of Mexico (GOM) agencies. Post recommends that U.S. food and agricultural exporters work with experienced and established customs brokers and importers.
