Canada: CARM Customs Program Mandatory in May 2024Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) project becomes mandatory in May 2024. The project is aimed at importers of record, including U.S. non-resident importers (NRIs), who are strongly encouraged to become familiar with this new electronic customs platform, and enroll through the CARM client portal in advance of the coming into force date.
Chile: Food Service - Hotel Restaurant InstitutionalIn 2022, Chile's foodservice industry is significantly different from that of 2019. The pandemic prompted many changes, with the advancement of online ordering and home delivery. For restaurants, online ordering developed from being almost insignificant in 2019 to representing 23 percent of value in 2022. Successful restaurants now need to be able to develop an attractive online presence. Similarly, the hotel industry had to adjust to evolving customer demands, prioritize health and safety measures, and provide more flexibility in cancellation policies. Finally, institutional food service underwent major transformations, with greater emphasis placed on sustainability, food quality, and transparency in the supply chain.
Colombia: FAIRS Export Certificate Report AnnualThis report outlines Colombia’s requirements for import permits and export certificates for agricultural products intended for human and animal consumption. It also provides a list of the Colombian government agencies involved in the entry of imported food products. Japan: Forestry Agency Proposal to Prove Legal Harvest under the Revised Clean Wood ActOn May 8, 2023, the Forestry Agency revised the Clean Wood Act. On October 11, 2023, the Forestry Agency proposed what types of information can be considered as equivalent to legal harvest certification. The Forestry Agency has opened the public comment period until November 9, 2023. The revised Clean Wood Act will be fully enacted in two years and the Forestry Agency will propose more details in the next two years.

USDA Under Secretary Taylor to Lead Trade Mission to Southeast AsiaWASHINGTON, Oct. 19, 2023 – Leaders from three state agriculture departments and 29 U.S. agribusinesses and organizations will accompany U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary Alexis M. Taylor on a trade mission to Southeast Asia October 30 – November 3 to expand export opportunities for U.S. food and farm products to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the world’s fourth-largest market. “Increasing trade and investment between the United States and Southeast Asia is a key priority for the Biden-Harris Administration, as evidenced by the U.S.-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” said Taylor, who leads USDA’s Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs mission area. “Through this agribusiness trade mission, USDA is proud to support that partnership, which aims to increase bilateral commerce and investment between the United States and Southeast Asia.” The delegation will travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Singapore – both billion-dollar export markets for U.S. food and agriculture. Trade mission participants will engage directly with potential buyers, receive in-depth market briefings from USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service and industry experts, and participate in site visits. While in Singapore, Taylor will also meet with the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council Inc., the leading voice for more than 175 American companies working to promote mutually beneficial trade between the United States and 10 countries that comprise the ASEAN (Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). In addition to representatives from the following businesses and organizations, Taylor will be joined by California Secretary of Food and Agriculture Karen Ross, Montana Deputy Director of Agriculture Zachary Coccoli, and South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture and Natural Resources Hunter Roberts.
