1. EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change Portal launched The newly launched EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change Portal provides access to knowledge, data and resources to support climate resilience planning, and information on projects and news specific to the Mission on Adaptation on Climate Change. As part of Climate-ADAPT, this Portal is developed by the European Commission, the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the Mission Implementation Platform (MIP4Adapt) team. << Read more |  © European Commission | ||
2. Funding opportunities for climate adaptation under Horizon Europe The Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change has four open calls to support ideas on adaptation to climate change under the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2023-2024, closing on 20th September 2023. << Read more |  © European Commission | |
3. LIFE 2023 Calls for proposals: bring green ideas to life The European Commission has launched the LIFE Programme’s 2023 calls for project proposals. This year, there is 611 million Euro available for nature conservation, environmental protection, climate action, and clean energy transition projects, of which 66.35 million Euro is available for climate change mitigation and adaptation. << Read more |  © European Commission | |
4. EU-level guidance on the climate resilience of buildings Buildings can be vulnerable to climate change. Extreme weather and changing climatic conditions can damage and degrade construction materials, compromise structural integrity, and even lead to their collapse. Therefore, the European Commission has published new technical guidance on climate adaptation in buildings. The report synthesises existing methods, specifications, best practices and guidance for construction and renovation to help assess the climate resilience of new and existing buildings, and plan upgrades accordingly. << Read more |  © DG CLIMA | |
5. EEA briefing on ‘Assessing the costs and benefits of climate change adaptation’ According to the EEA briefing ‘Assessing the costs and benefits of climate change adaptation', there is an urgent need to speed up the implementation of adaptation measures. In particular, a better understanding is needed of the costs and benefits of adaptive actions — and the costs of adaptation compared to the costs of failing to take action. 6. New EU afforestation and tree-planting guidelines promote adaptation The European Commission has recently published the new 'Guidelines on Biodiversity-Friendly Afforestation, Reforestation and Tree Planting' with practical recommendations on how to take climate change into account when creating new forests, restoring existing forests or planting trees in in urban and rural environments. These guidelines support authorities, forest and landowners, managers and civil society to better implement biodiversity-friendly afforestation, reforestation and tree-planting projects at a local level. << Read more |  © Peter Löffler | |
7. European State of the Climate report published The 2022 release of the European State of the Climate (ESOTC) report, compiled by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on behalf of the European Commission, was published. It provides a detailed analysis of the past calendar year, describing climate conditions and events. It also explores the associated variations in key climate variables from across all parts of the Earth system. 8. JRC report: Drought in Europe – March 2023 The European Drought Observatory of the Joint Research Centre, in the frame of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, published a technical report on the expected drought in Europe. 9. ETC CA paper ‘Just resilience for Europe: Towards measuring just resilience in climate change adaptation This technical paper of the European Topic Centre on Climate Change Adaptation and LULUCF (ETC/CA), supporting the work of the EEA on just resilience, explores options for a systematic and transparent framework to capture the progress on just resilience policies in the EU. 10. German €4 billion action plan for natural climate protection will also benefit adaptation to climate change The German Federal Action Plan on Nature-based Solutions for Climate and Biodiversity will play a substantial role in achieving the German government’s climate and biodiversity goals and in measures to adapt to the impacts of the climate crisis. 11. The Liguria Region (IT) climate change adaptation strategy The Regional Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (RSACC) contains climate scenarios for the Liguria region, a qualitative assessment of key climate risks for the regional sectors, and context specific adaptation objectives and measures. 12. 13. European Climate Data Explorer (ECDE) upgraded and with new and improved functionalities The European Climate Data Explorer, offering access to climate indices provided by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, is now presenting reanalysis indices for historical and present time, harmonised calculation of indicators, new water-related indicators, and offers more interactive and user-friendly visualisation options. << Read more |  © EEA | |
14. 15. Climate-ADAPT adaptation options updated Climate-ADAPT provides 59 generic adaptation options for climate impacts and risks and across all economic sectors that can be used to implement adaptation on the ground. They are underpinned by inspiring examples of their practical use (Climate-ADAPT case studies). 16. IPCC interactive atlas The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) developed a tool to explore global and regional observed data and model simulations. It underpins the Working Group I contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). A regional information component provides access to climate data from global and regional databases. 17. Extreme heat, widespread drought typify European climate in 2022 Last year, Europe experienced its hottest summer and the second warmest year on record, according to the 2022 edition of the Copernicus Climate Change Service’s (C3S) European State of the Climate (ESOTC) report. 18. Reducing wildfire risk in Europe through sustainable forest management: a policy brief Across Europe, a growing number of large and uncontrolled wildfires threaten values, such as forest ecosystems, essential ecosystem services, populations and infrastructure. 19. Assess the maladaptation potential of your adaptation actions in 17 questions The project REGILIENCE (Regional Pathways to Climate Resilience), dedicated to supporting the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate change, has created a maladaptation self-assessment checklist for experts of regional authorities and consultants in charge of planning and implementing regional adaptation actions. The tool identifies potential maladaptation risks and helps to avoid harm to livelihoods, ecosystems, and the economy. << Read more |  © Regilience project | |
20. New tool available to evaluate the quality of local adaptation plans Researchers and academics from the Euro-LCP (Local Climate Planning) initiative have launched the Climate Change Adaptation Scoring Tool. 21. Just transition for climate adaptation As a contribution to the UN Global Compact Think Lab on Just Transitions, the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) produced a brief on just transition for climate change adaptation. The brief’s objective is to highlight the important role of adaptation action for large multinational corporations that aim to achieve a just transition.
