Japan: Japan to Require Allergy Labeling for Walnuts
Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) will add walnuts to list of allergens that product manufacturers and importers must include on the label of packaged products containing walnuts. Currently, CAA strongly recommends including walnuts on the label, but does not require their inclusion. CAA will hold a public comment period prior to making this modification to the Food Labeling Standards, but have not yet announced dates for the comment period. Exports of U.S. walnuts to Japan have grown from 10,604 metric tons to 21,944 metric tons over the last decade.
Thailand: Rice Price - Weekly
Rice export prices decreased one percent due to the weakening of the Thai baht.
Vietnam: FTA Competition in Vietnam
The United States is the largest bilateral agricultural trading partner without a free trade agreement with Vietnam. This report summarizes the tariff and non-tariff competition that U.S. agricultural products face in Vietnam, as the result of the numerous bilateral and regional free trade agreements that Vietnam has signed with other trading partners. Post analysis of available trade data and discussions with industry sources indicate that since 2018, U.S. market share has significantly decreased for beef, pork, apples, grapes (and other fruit), frozen potatoes, wine, lobster, seafood, and other processed and consumer-ready products. The loss of market share for these and other high-value products is expected to continue as FTA rates are phased in further.

Chile: Salmon Overview
Salmon is Chile’s largest food and agricultural export and the second largest total export sector after copper. In 2021, exports totaled 615 thousand metric tons worth $4.8 billion. Production is growing rapidly; Chilean salmon production grew an average of 10.4 percent between 2016 and 2020 and totaled 1.1 million metric tons (MMT) in 2020. Salmon has a feed conversion rate of 1.2 – 1.5 kilograms of feed per kilogram of salmon, which results in a feed demand of approximately 1.32 – 1.65 million metric tons per year. More than 50 percent of salmon production cost is feed; thus, the salmon industry is constantly investing in research and technology to optimize feed and increase productivity. The current trend in salmon feed is to replace animal-based proteins with vegetable-based protein.

Census Bureau Accepting Cases to 2020 Post-Census Group Quarters Review Operation
A couple of weeks ago, we began mailing approximately 40,000 eligible governmental units at the tribal, state and local levels about participating in the 2020 Post-Census Group Quarters Review (PCGQR) operation. The 2020 PCGQR is a new, one-time operation that gives governmental units or their representatives the opportunity to ask the Census Bureau to review their 2020 Census group quarters population counts for group quarters facilities in blocks they believe were undercounted.
Group quarters include such places as college/university student housing, residential treatment centers, nursing/skilled-nursing facilities, group homes, correctional facilities, and workers’ group living quarters and job corps centers.
Governments that would like to request a review of group quarters population counts for a group quarter facility within a certain block can submit their cases through June 30, 2023, via the Secure Web Incoming Module (SWIM).
