DG Okonjo-Iweala and negotiations chair join call to ‘stop the fish meltdown’ on Ocean Day
On the occasion of World Ocean Day on 8 June, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Ambassador Santiago Wills, chair of the fisheries subsidies negotiations, stood with environmental groups in urging WTO members to forge a long-awaited agreement to curb harmful fisheries subsidies at the upcoming 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12). The DG and Ambassador Wills paid a visit to an installation of a fish ice sculpture set up by a coalition of non-governmental organizations to highlight the issue of depleting fish stocks at Place des Nations in Geneva.

WTO resumes in-person training courses in Geneva
A group of 26 government officials from developing countries and least-developed countries started the first in-person training course at the WTO headquarters since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Beginning on 7 June, the eight-week course seeks to enhance participants’ ability to analyse, formulate and implement multilateral trade policies.

Members urged to address needs of women entrepreneurs at MC12 event
WTO members must step up work to ensure that trade and trade rules better serve women amid disruptions posed by multiple crises, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said at the WTO-International Trade Centre (ITC) joint event titled “Unlocking Trade for Women’s Empowerment and Sustainable Development” held on 12 June, the first day of the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12). The event spotlighted perspectives from entrepreneurs and enabling organizations to effectively increase women’s participation in international trade.

Revised draft agreement on fisheries subsidies sets stage for pivotal negotiations at MC12
The chair of the fisheries subsidies negotiations, Ambassador Santiago Wills of Colombia, on 10 June submitted to WTO members a revised draft agreement for new global rules to curb harmful fishing subsidies. Released ahead of ministers’ arrival at the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) in Geneva, the text for consideration reflects delegates’ collective efforts in recent intensive meetings and suggests landing zones to bring over two decades of negotiations to a successful close.

LDC trade ministers welcome renewed cooperation between WTO and UN on LDC trade development
WTO Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Mr Sandagdorj Erdenebileg of the UN High Representative for Least-Developed Countries signed a partnership agreement on 11 June in Geneva aimed at strengthening cooperation to boost the participation of least-developed countries in the global trading system. Trade ministers and WTO ambassadors from over 40 LDCs attended the ceremony on the eve of the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12), which begins on 12 June.

WTO, Commonwealth Secretariat strengthen efforts to boost trade capacity of Commonwealth members
The WTO and the Commonwealth Secretariat signed today (11 June) a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation between the two organizations and to enhance the participation of Commonwealth countries in the multilateral trading system. The MoU was signed by WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland.

Australia contributes CHF 70,000 to support LDCs’ participation in MC12
Australia is contributing just over CHF 70,000 to help government officials from least-developed countries (LDCs) take part in the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference, which will be held from 12 to 15 June 2022 in Geneva.

Draft texts on WTO response to pandemic, IP response sent to ministers for decision
Negotiators in Geneva finalized their work on 10 June regarding two draft texts setting out a WTO response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including an intellectual property (IP) response. The two texts will now be sent to trade ministers attending the organization’s 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) for review and possible approval.

DG Okonjo-Iweala, Chair urge members to support draft agriculture texts on eve of MC12
WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala urged members to move ahead on the basis of three revised draft negotiating texts introduced by the chair of the agriculture negotiations, Ambassador Gloria Abraham Peralta (Costa Rica), at a meeting on 9 June, just three days before the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) gets under way. She encouraged members to compromise with one another so that “simple, short, beautiful and balanced” texts can be adopted by ministers at MC12.

Japan gives CHF 125,000 to help LDCs engage in fisheries subsidies talks at MC12
Japan is contributing CHF 125,000 in 2022 to cover the travel expenses of officials traveling to Geneva to participate in the negotiations to curb harmful fisheries subsidies that will take place at the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12). The contribution is to the WTO Fisheries Subsidies Trust Fund created in May 2019 at the request of the WTO’s least-developed country members (LDCs).
