On 13 January 2022, Executive Vice-President Timmermans will have a debate with Members of the TRAN Committee on the ‘Fit for 55’ legislative package.
The 'Fit for 55' legislative package aims to implement the Union's goal of moving towards a sustainable society. The transport sector is one of the sectors that has proved challenging to decarbonise.
The package therefore includes many elements that affect the transport sector, such as the proposed inclusion of the maritime and road transport sectors in the EU ETS system with measures to reduce and offset international aviation emissions, introduction of a mandate for the uptake of sustainable alternative fuels for the aviation and maritime sectors, phasing-out of the internal combustion engine and the roll-out of alternative fuel infrastructure.

Highlights - New Own Resources proposals: debate with Commissioner Hahn - 13.01.2022 - Committee on Budgets

The Committee on Budgets will receive Commissioner Hahn to look into the Own Resources package proposed by the Commission on 22 December 2021 during its meeting of 13 January. The package comprises three new categories of own resources for the EU budget based on: (i) revenue from the revised ETS, (ii) the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and (iii) a share of the additional corporate tax income which is expected once the OECD/G20 agreement is operationalised at EU level.
The package also proposes to amend the EU's long term budget 2021-2027 in order to introduce the Social Climate Fund and to technically adjust the EU long-term budget (multiannual financial framework 2021-2027) ceilings to cover early repayment of NextGenerationEU (the EU Recovery Instrument) debt.

The meetings allow for remote participation in a virtual environment.
Thus, the next TRAN meeting will take place on Thursday, 13 January 2022 from 09.00 to 12.00 in room SPINELLI 1G3 from where it will be webstreamed.
