Leadership Excursion Makes First-ever Visit to Ikaria, Completes Cyprus Leg

Under the leadership of Supreme President Carl R. Hollister, the annual AHEPA Family Leadership Excursion completed visits to Ikaria, Greece, and to the Republic of Cyprus this past week. The delegation has arrived in Athens for a final series of meetings and events.
In Cyprus, the delegation met with Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides (tweet), Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Overseas Cypriots Photis Photiou (tweet), and National Guard Chief Lieutenant General Ilias Leontaris. U.S.-Cyprus relations, energy exploration in Cyprus's exclusive economic zone, the status of the resumption of settlement talks, and humanitarian issues were discussion topics. The delegation also appreciated the hospitality of the Brothers of AHEPA District 27 (Cyprus) who hosted several dinner events for the group. photo gallery

Visiting an Ikarian village.
with the administration of Ikaria Prefectural General Hospital, located in Agios Kirikos, to learn more about the hospital's needs to serve the community. After receiving a presentation from the director of the hospital, Stamatis Kardasis, AHEPA pledged to provide assistance. Through AHEPA's public health assistance to Greece campaign, AHEPA has been able to team-up with partners to provide millions of dollars in aid to help address the medical supply shortage in Greece. The delegation also met with local community leaders and exchanged gifts of appreciation and visited the village of Past Supreme President V.I. Chebithes (1924-27; 1935-40). PSP Chebithes was responsible for AHEPA's major growth and expansion during the the Order's first decade, especially West of the Mississippi and eventually in every U.S. state, to meet with his family descendants. photo gallery

Recapping: $25,000 donated to Ecumenical Patriarchate, Halki Seminary
The Leadership Excursion kicked-off with a visit to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Theological School of Halki, April 30 to May 2. There, the AHEPA family presented His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with a $20,000 donation and Metropolitan Elpidophoros, dean of the Theological School of Halki, with a $5,000 donation. photo gallery

Did You Know? AHEPA, through the AHEPA National Housing
Corp., is a leadingprovider of affordable housing for the elderly in the United States through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Section 202 Program for the Elderly. AHEPA's Housing Program has developed 95 affordable elderly housing communities, totaling 5,049 residential units, spanning 21 states.
The Administration for Community Living just released its annual summary report on older Americans, 2017 Profile of Older Americans. Some stats:
Over the past 10 years, the population age 65 and over increased from 37.2 million in 2006 to 49.2 million in 2016 (a 33% increase) and is projected to almost double to 98 million in 2060.
The age 85 and over population is projected to more than double from 6.4 million in 2016 to 14.6 million in 2040 (a 129% increase).
About one in every seven, or 15.2%, of the population is an older American.

Greece intends to become the third EU importer of US LNG, Ambassador Pyatt says

The Revithoussa liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal provides Greece with flexibility for importing natural gas from multiple sources into the local market, US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt told a conference in Athens on May 3. "A future terminal near Alexandroupoli would add to that resilience and is a high priority for the months ahead to complete financing and participation, hopefully including an American share. read more
Cyprus, Israel, Greece push for gas pipeline to Europe

The leaders of Cyprus, Israel and Greece said Tuesday they're determined to push ahead with plans for a pipeline that would supply east Mediterranean gas to Europe as the continent seeks to diversify its supplies. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the East Med pipeline a "very serious endeavor" that's important for Europe, which is looking for new sources of energy. read more
Greece: Turkey's bid to legitimize territory claims is wrong

Greece's foreign minister says Turkey's efforts to legitimize 'illegal' claims on Greek sovereign territory are doomed to fail because they're contrary to international law. Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias says Turkey has submitted to the United Nations a document containing "erroneous positions" regarding Greek territory in the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean and is trying to present such claims as lawful. read more
Eight Years on, Eight Big Questions Are Still Looming for Greece

On the eighth anniversary of the euro-area's biggest bailout, Greece is closer than ever to breaking free from its creditors' oversight and trying its luck raising money on its own. But, as Aug. 20 -- its exit day -- nears, clarity is in short supply, feeding uncertainty over how easily Athens can return to normalcy. read more
Greece accuses Turkey of revenge cyberattack plot

Greece is preparing for a cyberattack on its state institutions after it refused to hand over Turkish soldiers accused of plotting to overthrow President Erdogan. Turkish hackers of the Akincilar - or Raiders - group threatened to breach the Greek foreign ministry's computer system and leak sensitive state documents. They also targeted the state news agency and accused Greece of aiding and abetting terrorists. read more
Greek American Labor Hero Louis Tikas Statue to be Unveiled in Colorado

A statue of heroic Greek mine worker Louis Tikas who was murdered by the National Guard in the Ludlow Massacre is raised in Trinidad, Colorado to be officially unveiled on June 23. Louis Tikas has become a symbol of the struggle for labor rights in the United States after his killing by the Colorado National Guard on April 20, 1914 as the leader of the Ludlow miners who went on strike for inhuman working conditions in the Rockefeller mines. read more
David Tsirekas to launch mod Greek restaurants in Chicago

The world has taken note of Sydney's mod Greek revolution (hello Alpha, Opa and Ble) and where better to take inspirations from than Pitt Street's 1821, the restaurant named after the Greek revolution against the Ottomans. 1821's head chef, David Tsirekas, has been poached to oversee the launch of two Mod Greek restaurants in the US after Chicago mega restaurateur Louie Alexakis flew into Australia to check out what all the fuss is about with our Greek food and fell in love with Tsirekas's cooking. read more
