Resilienz des Bundesverfassungsgerichtes und des demokratischen Rechtsstaats Berlin, 22.12.2024  –  215/24 ​​​​​​​ Arbeitsgemeinschaft Sozialdemokratischer Juristinnen und Juristen (AsJ) Ein großer Schritt für die Resilienz des Bundesverfassungsgerichtes und des demokratischen Rechtsstaats Zu den Beschlüssen des Bundestages und des Bundesrates, durch Verfassungsänderung die Resilienz des Bundesverfassungsgerichtes zu stärken und wichtige Regelungen durch Aufnahme ins Grundgesetz nur mit einer Zweidrittel-Mehrheit änderbar zu machen, erklären Dr. Antje Draheim und Harald Baumann-Hasske, Vorsitzende der ASJ: „Es ist ein guter Tag für Demokratie und Rechtsstaat, dass diese Verfassungsänderung beschlossen werden konnte. Sie macht die Bundesrepublik Deutschland sicherer gegen mögliche Versuche, Verfassungsgerichte, die Justiz, die Verwaltung und die Medien gleichzuschalten, wie sie in Polen und in Ungarn mit unterschiedlichem Erfolg unternommen wurden. Es geht nicht nur um die Besetzung und die Arbeitsweise des Bundesverfassungsgerichts, sondern um Vorsorge vor Angriffen auf seine Unabhängigkeit und Funktionsfähigkeit durch eine autoritär-populistisch agierende Partei. Wer das Gericht willkürlich vergrößern, umbesetzen, die Wahlperiode der Richterinnen und Richter begrenzen oder die Arbeitsweise verändern könnte, würde der politischen Einflussnahme auf die Unabhängigkeit des Gerichts alle Tore offen lassen.“ so Draheim. „Lange konnte sich niemand vorstellen, dass jemand so etwas versuchen könnte; diese Zeiten sind vorbei. Deswegen war dieser Schritt so wichtig. Wir freuen uns, dass es der Bundesregierung ohne eigene Mehrheit im Parlament gelungen ist, ein solches Projekt gerade in einer Zeit nach Stellung der Vertrauensfrage im Bundestag und Bundesrat umzusetzen. Es zeigt, dass Olaf Scholz in der Lage ist, die demokratischen Fraktionen im Bundestag zusammenzuführen. Zu danken ist Rolf Mützenich und den Rechtspolitikern der SPD-Fraktion, aber auch den anderen Fraktionen des Deutschen Bundestages, die an diesem wichtigen Gesetz mitgewirkt und ihren wertvollen Beitrag geleistet haben. Selbst in einer Phase des Wahlkampfes gibt es eine Gemeinsamkeit der Demokratinnen und Demokraten, was auch für die Zukunft wichtig ist.“ erklärt Baumann-Hasske. „Dass die Landesregierung Brandenburgs, wo eine autoritär-populistische Partei im Landtag bereits über eine Sperrminorität verfügt, sich im Bundesrat auf Veranlassung der BSW bei der Abstimmung im Bundesrat enthalten musste, ist hingegen kein gutes Zeichen für eine auf die Resilienz unseres demokratischen Rechtsstaats ausgerichtete Rechtspolitik“, so Draheim abschließend. Restoring the Gut Microbiome with Fecal Microbiota Transplants

Antibiotics are lifesaving tools but can come with risks. Antibiotics can kill everything in a patient’s gut microbiome—including helpful and harmful microbes. This can lead to germs taking over the gut microbiome, and it can take a long time for the microbiome to return to normal after antibiotic treatment. In some cases, the gut microbiome may never restore on its own, and fecal microbiota can be used to replenish and help protect against germs.  Guest blogger, Colleen Kraft, MD, shares her work with finding ways to restore the gut microbiome with fecal microbiota transplants.   Read on to find out more about her work with the microbiome and why it matters in efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Prime Minister announces new Chief Government Whip

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that the Honourable Mona Fortier, Member of Parliament for Ottawa—Vanier, will serve as Chief Government Whip.

Mona Fortier previously served as Deputy Government Whip. First elected in 2017, and re-elected twice, she has held various Cabinet positions, including President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Middle Class Prosperity and Associate Minister of Finance. Before entering politics, she worked as Chief Director of Communications and Market Development at Collège La Cité and managed her own strategic communications-consulting firm. Her community involvement has earned her various recognitions, including a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

As Chief Government Whip, Ms. Fortier will work as part of a diverse team to deliver real, positive change for Canadians, including making life more affordable, growing the economy, and creating good middle-class jobs.

Supreme President Tsivicos, Ambassador-Designate Guilfoyle Discuss U.S.-Greece Relations, AHEPA'S Century-Long Role

Washington, D.C. — Earlier today, AHEPA Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos engaged in a constructive conversation with U.S. Ambassador-Designate to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle as she embarks on her confirmation process. The discussion focused on Greece’s strategic importance in the southeastern Mediterranean and the enduring impact of AHEPA’s work in the region over the last 102 years.   Supreme President Tsivicos shared insights into the current geopolitical landscape, emphasizing the vital role Greece plays in regional stability. He also highlighted AHEPA’s contributions to Greece, Cyprus, and the broader Mediterranean, underscoring the organization's commitment to promoting U.S. interests and fostering strong relations as a longstanding bridge between the two longstanding allies. Additionally, Tsivicos discussed the continued provocations by Turkey over Greece territorial integrity, the continued occupation of Cyprus and raised concerns about the protection of religious freedoms and the protection of the Ecumenical patriarchate in Turkey, advocating for U.S. support in ensuring the preservation of religious rights in the region.   According to Tsivicos, Ambassador-Designate Guilfoyle expressed her appreciation for AHEPA’s century-long service and support to Greece and the assistance it provides to communities across the United States while affirming that if confirmed, she would work to strengthen and advance the importance of Greece and its role in the region.     Tsivicos noted AHEPA’s historical involvement in promoting U.S. interests in Greece, including the creation of the Truman Statue, which honors Ahepan President Harry S. Truman’s efforts to rebuild Greece after World War II. He also mentioned AHEPA’s role in the construction of the George Marshall Statue erected on the grounds of the U.S. Embassy in Athens, commemorating the Marshall Plan.   The Supreme President expressed eagerness to meet with Ambassador-Designate Guilfoyle in Athens, if confirmed.   “We look forward to working closely with the U.S. Ambassador to continue promoting strong U.S.-Greece relations,” he remarked.
