Brazil’s defense budget has hovered around 20-22 billion USD and the budget proposal for 2023 is similar at around $23 billion USD. Major Brazilian Defense Strategic projects include: the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB) and the Navy Nuclear Program (PNM) coordinated by the Brazilian Navy, the Guarani armored wheeled vehicles, the Integrated Border Monitoring System (SISFRON), Cyber Defense, the KC-390 aircraft, Gripen AM-X aircraft modernization, and Space System Strategic Program (coordinated by the Brazilian Air Force_. The National Strategy of Defense (NSD) published in 2008 and revised every 4 years continues to be the guide for the medium and long-term strategy for the defense sector in Brazil. The three strategic sectors highlighted in the NSD are: nuclear, cyber, and space. Additional priorities include promoting the development of and strengthening the Brazilian defense industry, which produces aircraft, vessels, cybernetic tools for data protection, radars, secure communication systems, weapons, among other high-tech items that contribute to the country’s exports of defense items to many third markets in the Middle East and Africa. The U.S. has a long history of trade, investment, space, and defense cooperation with Brazil. The Brazilian space sector has been expanding its activities since the signature and ratifications of the technology safeguards agreement (TSA) between Brazil and the U.S. in 2019. The TSA allows the use of U.S. technology in space launches from Brazil, specifically the Alcantara Space Launch Center. The strategic relationship between Brazil and U.S. in the space sector has been growing in recent years with several foundational agreements signed, such as the Space Situational Awareness Agreement, the CubeSat Agreement to Study Solar Physics, Scintillation Prediction Observations Research Task - SPORT, and the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space Cooperation Agreement. Priorities for the space sector includes development in the satellite constellations, launch vehicles, a space launch center (Alcantara), and a space operations center. Defense The strong cooperation developed between Brazil and the U.S. in recent years, has contributed for the development of strategic sectors such as defense and space. Currently, there is a successful government-to government and industry-to-industry cooperative efforts leading the market to the establishment of joint ventures and bilateral commercial cooperation that leverage corporate synergies in a range of advanced technologies and capabilities. NATO Foreign Ministers end meetings in Bucharest with focus on China, more support for partners NATO foreign ministers ended two days of meetings in Bucharest today (Wednesday, 30 November 2022), with meetings focused on the long-term challenges posed by China, as well as on support for partners facing Russian pressure. “NATO is an Alliance of Europe and North America, but the challenges we face are global, and we must address them together in NATO,” said Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Foreign ministers considered China’s ambitious military developments, its technological advances, and its growing cyber and hybrid activities. They also stressed the importance of meeting NATO’s resilience guidelines, maintaining NATO’s technological edge, and continuing to strengthen cooperation with partners in the Indo-Pacific region and with the European Union. NATO Secretary General thanks Germany for contributions at critical time In a speech at the Berlin Security Conference on Thursday 1 December 2022, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked Germany for its ''significant contributions to our Alliance", stressing that German leadership ''is more important than ever as we face the most serious security situation in decades.'' NATO Secretary General: "we will not back down" in support for Ukraine NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg outlined the key decisions taken by NATO Foreign Ministers at their first meeting in Bucharest today (Tuesday, 29 November 2022), underlining that the meeting sent "a strong message of NATO unity, and of sustained support to Ukraine". Despite Ukraine’s bravery and progress on the ground, Russia retains strong military capabilities and a large number of troops. Faced with President Putin’s attempts to weaponise winter, "to force Ukrainians to freeze or flee… and to divide all of us who support them," Mr Stoltenberg said that NATO will continue to support Ukraine for “as long as it takes”. Event Spotlight: AHEPA District 28 Conference

On Saturday, November 12, Supreme President Jimmy Kokotas attended a successful District 28 conference hosted at the Greek Embassy in Paris, France. The Supreme President and brothers from across Europe were welcomed by Greek Ambassador Dimitrios Zevelakis, who provided some introductory remarks praising the important role AHEPA plays in today's society. District 28 Governor Dimosthenis Mammonas presented a detailed report underlining the spectacular growth and expansion that the AHEPA in Europe has recently had with 16 Chapters and 300 members in 8 European countries. District Lodge officers provided reports on their activities, including a presentation by Vice President of Hellenism, Theodoros Gkotsis, on the latest geopolitical challenges for Greece and Cyprus in the region. Participants held a fruitful and constructive exchange of views with the Supreme President focusing on past, ongoing and future activities in Europe, including the AHEPA project "Greek dialects as a living tradition."   An initiation ceremony for new Brothers from the Paris and Brussels Chapters also took place. District 23 Governor, James Hutchison, also attended the event, which was preceded by an informal dinner on Friday, November 11, in one of the restaurants in Paris owned by the Mavromatis family from Cyprus.   The district worked hard to promote the message and principles of the Order of AHEPA. In light of the recent visit of the Supreme President and lodge members an installation of their newest Chapter A623 "Robert Schuman" in Luxembourg took place. Congratulations to our new brothers and to our brothers from District 28 on a successful conference!
