Croatia: EPPO conducts urgent investigative measures in probe into abuse of office and authority involving RRF funds In Croatian below / Na hrvatskom u nastavku (Luxembourg, 29 October 2026) – The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Zagreb (Croatia) is conducting urgent evidentiary actions today in an investigation into possible abuse of office and authority involving funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) and the State Budget of the Republic of Croatia. These follow joint coordinated efforts by EPPO and the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK), which is conducting parallel measures as part of a national investigation. All investigative measures are carried out by the National Police Office for Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (PNUSKOK). Upon hearing the suspects, the EPPO will issue a decision regarding further actions in the case, which will be communicated to the public in a timely manner. No further details will be disclosed until that time. All persons concerned are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in the competent Croatian courts of law. The EPPO is the independent public prosecution office of the European Union. It is responsible for investigating, prosecuting and bringing to judgment crimes against the financial interests of the EU.   more   Hrvatska: EPPO provodi hitne istražne radnje u istrazi vezanoj za zlouporabu položaja i ovlasti u korištenju sredstava Mehanizma za oporavak i otpornost (RRF) (Luxembourg, 29. listopada 2026.) – Ured europskog javnog tužitelja (EPPO) u Zagrebu (Hrvatska) danas provodi hitne dokazne radnje u sklopu istrage o mogućoj zlouporabi položaja i ovlasti koja uključuje sredstva Mehanizma za oporavak i otpornost (RRF) i Državnog proračuna Republike Hrvatske. Navedeno postupanje uslijedilo je nakon zajedničkih koordiniranih aktivnosti EPPO-a i Ureda za suzbijanje korupcije i organiziranog kriminaliteta (USKOK), koji provodi usporedne mjere u sklopu nacionalne istrage. Sve istražne mjere provodi Policijski nacionalni ured za suzbijanje korupcije i organiziranog kriminaliteta (PNUSKOK). EPPO će nakon ispitivanja osumnjičenika donijeti odluku o daljnjim postupanjima u predmetu, o čemu će javnost biti pravovremeno obaviještena. Do tada se neće objavljivati nikakve daljnje pojedinosti. Odgovoran je za istragu, kazneni progon i podizanje optužnice za kaznena djela protiv financijskih interesa Unije.   Više   Latvia: EPPO conducts searches in probe into suspected €1.4 million fraud in Alūksne municipality (Luxembourg, 28 October 2026) – Today, at the request of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Riga (Latvia), the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) have carried out searches and other measures in an investigation into suspected procurement fraud and abuse of office involving public officials of the Alūksne Municipality. According to the investigation, municipal officials, together with representatives of companies operating in the city, may have engaged in illegal activities to obtain over €1.4 million from the European Regional Development Fund for a project implemented by the municipality – thus damaging the financial interests of both the Latvian State and the European Union. The project aimed to construct three production facilities in the municipality for rental to companies. In accordance with the project implementation terms, the companies intended to occupy the facilities were to be selected through a rental auction conducted on an open, transparent and non-discriminatory basis. However, the evidence indicates that the suspects misled the responsible authorities and built the facilities for the benefit of preselected operators, in breach of the project implementation terms. Law enforcement officers seized documents and cash. In addition, ammunition was found and seized. The investigation is ongoing. No further details will be made public at this stage. All persons concerned are presumed innocent until proven guilty in the competent Latvian courts of law. The EPPO is the independent public prosecution office of the European Union. Its competence comprises investigating, prosecuting criminal offences and bringing to judgment the perpetrators of offences against the EU financial interests.   more   Romania: Three indicted over €3.5 million fraud involving 237 EU-funded agricultural projects (Luxembourg, 27 October 2026) – The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Bucharest (Romania) has filed an indictment at the Bucharest Tribunal against three individuals accused of fraud involving non-repayable EU funding for 237 projects to support small farms and young farmers. The investigation uncovered hundreds of projects submitted for funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), intended to support the installation of young farmers and the development of small farms. Based on the evidence, a consultant – the main defendant in this case – submitted false and inaccurate documents in 237 projects presented to the contracting authority, the Agency for Rural Investment Financing (AFIR), on behalf of companies and family businesses. The total funding requested amounted to approximately €5.7 million (RON 27.7 million), through the 237 funding applications identified as fraudulent in the investigation to date. Of these, 170 projects received funding, resulting in an estimated damage to the EU budget of €3.5 million (RON 16.8 million). The three defendants include the main suspect – a consultant who was arrested in May 2026 – and two other individuals who were placed under judicial control. If found guilty, they could face prison sentences of up to 10 years. A further 30 individuals have admitted the offences and requested that plea agreements be concluded, with the relevant legal procedures now underway. In addition, dozens of other individuals have been investigated of having agreed, in exchange for commissions ranging from 10% to 15% of the total project value, to allow fraudulent funding applications to be submitted in their names. The investigation was conducted by the EPPO in Bucharest, together with judicial police officers from the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) - Support Structure for the European Delegated Prosecutors in Romania, with the support of the Dâmbovița County Police Inspectorate (IPJ Dâmbovița) and the Bucharest General Police Directorate - Economic Crime Investigation Brigade (DGPMB).
