18 September 2026 Update NATO Secretary General visits the United Kingdom On 16 September 2026, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited the United Kingdom and met with Prime Minister Andy Burnham.  The leaders visited Harwell Science and Innovation campus in Didcot, where they met with defence sector representatives, apprentices and staff.  Mr Rutte highlighted the ‘societal dividend’ produced by defence investment - jobs and economic growth. He praised the United Kingdom for its innovative technologies, defence industry, and world-class universities. He thanked the UK for its role as a leading force within NATO. At the 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague, Allies agreed to account for up to 1.5% of GDP on defence- and security-related spending, including to boost civil preparedness and resilience. The Secretary General thanked the Prime Minister for Slovenia’s contributions to NATO, its role in the Western Balkans, and for its steadfast support for Ukraine. Wikoff, Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples, concluded a five-nation tour of Slovenia, Croatia, Albania, North Macedonia and Romania, where he evaluated operational readiness, military mobility and infrastructure in support of NATO’s defence plans.
