The science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce is integral to the United States’ ability to meet persistent and emerging global challenges, including national security, health, economic development, and future research challenges. A globally competitive STEM education system equips Americans with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in the STEM workforce. Indicators of the performance of the domestic S&E enterprise—from STEM education and training to employment and attrition—highlight challenges. A new report, STEM Talent: Education, Training, and Workforce, published today by the National Science Board (NSB), provides high quality data to inform decision makers about U.S. STEM education and workforce trends, including how the U.S. compares with other countries. The report finds that employment in STEM occupations continued to grow, increasing by 26% from 2013 to 2023, with STEM workers experiencing lower unemployment rates and enjoying higher median earnings than those in non-STEM jobs. SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING INDICATORS Science and Engineering Indicators is a Congressionally mandated suite of products on the state of the U.S. science and engineering enterprise. The reports are prepared under the guidance of the National Science Board by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). NATIONAL SCIENCE BOARD The National Science Foundation Act of 1950 charged the National Science Board (NSB) with two roles: governing board of the NSF and advisor to Congress and the President on policy matters related to STEM research and STEM education. Selected for their distinguished service and accomplishments in academia, government, and the private sector, the Board’s 24 presidentially appointed members are leaders in STEM research and education.
