Dear MARIA,   In today’s edition, we highlight: Unlocking Canada's Own Market Boosting India’s Productivity Podcast: Enrico Letta on Harnessing Europe's Single Market F&D: The Human Edge Ask an Economist: Difference Between the IMF and World Bank COUNTRY FOCUS Canada Can Grow Faster by Reforming Its Domestic Market Canada’s economy is open to global trade, but significant barriers remain within its domestic market, limiting growth and productivity. IMF analysis shows that internal barriers represent a cost equivalent to an average 9 percent tariff, and in some service sectors the cost is much higher.   Removing these barriers could raise Canada’s real GDP by nearly 7 percent over time, equivalent to about C$210 billion. Smaller provinces would benefit the most, but all regions would gain. A more integrated domestic market would raise productivity, strengthen resilience, and support inclusive growth.  Read the Article COUNTRY FOCUS Business Growth and Innovation Can Boost India’s Productivity Strengthening innovation and removing barriers to business in India could raise productivity growth by nearly 40 percent. This would add up to additional output equivalent to that of Karnataka, India’s fourth-largest state, each decade.    Productivity gains have been uneven across sectors: services have performed well, manufacturing has lagged, and agriculture remains less productive. A key challenge is India’s large number of small firms, many of which face regulatory and labor constraints that limit growth and innovation.    Boosting innovation, improving the business environment, and expanding AI adoption—while investing in skills—could unlock a new wave of productivity growth and support India’s long-term development ambitions. Read the Article PODCAST Enrico Letta: Harnessing Europe's Single Market The idea of European integration through a single market was to capitalize on the EU as a whole; however, the single market is a product of the early 1990s. EU member states now appear reticent to pool sovereignty to the degree required to counter the geopolitical challenges of today’s world.   Enrico Letta is President of the Jacques Delors Institute and a champion of Delors’ vision of creating a fully integrated European economic space. Letta’s 2024 report, Much More than a Market, argues that the single market should encompass all sectors rather than a select few and that fragmentation is holding Europe back.   Listen to the Podcast F&D MAGAZINE The Human Edge (Credit: Irene Servillo) Economists have long recognized the importance of human capital—the skills and knowledge embedded in people. More than a century ago, Alfred Marshall wrote that “the most valuable of all capital is that invested in human beings.”   But recent advances in artificial intelligence have raised concerns about the displacement of human capital. In F&D magazine, Pablo Peña says that three critical components of human capital—curiosity, critical thinking, and self-regulation—can help allay these concerns.   “A large-language model fed with all the information available until this moment wouldn’t be a substitute for the talent, creativity, and curiosity of future creators,” Peña writes. “Although AI may do a decent job recombining old data…it cannot mimic human creations yet unseen.” Read the Article VIDEO Ask an Economist: What's the Difference Between the IMF and World Bank?
