AHEPA E-News Volume 19, Issue 21 | Wednesday, June 4, 2025 District Conventions from Coast to Coast! The AHEPA Families of District 20 and District 23 convened for their annual District Conventions over the past two weeks, celebrating their long and impressive histories of Hellenism, fraternity and community. Both districts took this opportunity to express their gratitude to their members, giving awards, scholarships and memories to all those deserving individuals.  Attending both historical events, Supreme Vice President E. Chris Kaitson congratulated the districts on their successful years and events, thanking them for both their hospitality and unwavering support of their communities.   The Supreme Vice President was joined first at the District 23 Convention in Hamilton, Ontario over Memorial Day Weekend by AHEPA District 23 Governor Nick Pantieras, DOP Grand President Margaret Dritsas, DOP Grand Governor Xanthe Vafopoulou, SOP Supreme Treasurer Andreas Koloniaris, MOA Grand Secretary Cristina Saavedra-Mamounis, MOA Grand Treasurer Falia Pantieras, and multiple District and Chapter officers. During his visitation, he presented awards to Brothers James Hutchison, Nicholas T. Zacharidis, and Sam Maginas and extended his congratulations to all newly elected officers of the Beaver District. Across the country in Woodland Hills, California, Supreme Vice President Kaitson attended the District 20 Convention over the weekend of May 30th. The convention was hosted by San Fernando Valley AHEPA Chapter 412 and brought members from throughout the El Camino Real District to Woodland Hills to celebrate the District's accomplishments. Joining the Supreme Vice President were Supreme Governor of Region 8 George Zioulas, District 20 Governor James Dedakes, DOP Grand Governor Linda Belba, DOP District Governor Sofie Batshoun, as well as multiple Past Supreme, Grand and District Governors of both the AHEPA and Daughters of Penelope. The Supreme Vice President presented multiple awards during his visitation, and had the honor of attending the District's scholarship awards luncheon as well. A special congratulations to AHEPA Past District 20 Governor, Pete Marudas, who was awarded District 20's Periclean Award. Congratulations to the AHEPA Families of both Districts 20 and 23 on successful events! AHEPA Ch. 106 helps reactivate Sons of Pericles Spotlight on AHEPA Sophocles Chapter 106 of Providence, Rhode Island, who last weekend, in collaboration with the Supreme Lodge of the Sons of Pericles, reactivated Sons of Pericles Plato Chapter 21! SOP Supreme Governor George Antonellis traveled to Rhode Island to initiate the new brothers and officially reactivate the Chapter. He expressed how impressed he was by the support of the AHEPA Chapter and was thankful for the opportunity to represent the Supreme Lodge on such a momentous occasion. Also in attendance at this historic reactivation were AHEPA Past Supreme President Dr. John Grossomanides, AHEPA District 7 Governor John Fakis, Lt. Governor Gregory Simones, PDG Demetrius Tasoulas, and Rhode Island State Senator Leonidas Raptakis. Yale star John Poulakidas 25-point performance helped defeat the Cornell Big Red, 90-84, in the Ivy League tournament championship game. This victory would qualify Yale for the NCAA March Madness. The eagle-eyed guard Poulakidas would shoot 7- for -7 the second half and win the Most Valuable Player Award. After the game AHEPA Hellenic Hall of Fame Chairman Gregory Stamos, introduced present legend John Poulakidas to Yale past legend Steve Leondis. They both greeted each other with a hand shake and embraced each other as fate would have it. Poulakidas won AHEPA’S 2025 William Chirgotis Award for Most Outstanding Hellenic Collegiate Athlete. The sharp shooting Poulakidas scored 1,300 points in his career and ranks 10 th all time for the Yale Bulldogs. Poulakidas has teams from the NBA and Euro League interested in his talent. Greek American News Digest  Editor's Note: Editorials, commentaries, opinion pieces, and articles are shared for information purposes only and do not necessarily reflect the views or policy positions of the Order of AHEPA, its affiliated organizations, and members Turkey earthquake: teenager dead as tremors felt in Rhodes, Greece The Times (June 3) At least one person is dead and dozens injured after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s tourist region and southern Greece early on Tuesday. The earthquake happened at 2.17am local time about six miles (10km) off the coast of Marmaris, a popular package holiday destination. A 5.2 magnitude quake also struck the Greek island of Crete near Heraklion. A 14-year-old girl in Turkey died after she had a panic attack and 70 people were hurt in the province of Mugla as they hurried to find safety, Ali Yerlikaya, the interior minister, said on X.
