● European Council   13/06/2025 18:29 | Press release | President Costa to travel to Kananaskis, Canada for the G7 summit on 15-17 June 2025   The President of the European Council, António Costa, will travel to Kananaskis, Alberta (Canada) to take part in the G7 summit from 15 to 17 June 2025. Hosted by Canada as the rotating G7 presidency, the Summit will bring together the leaders of the seven G7 countries, as well as the European Union and other invited countries to discuss pressing global issues, including international peace and security, the global economic outlook and energy security. The EU will be represented by President Costa and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. “In a time of profound challenges and as we celebrate 50 years since the foundation of the G7, unity among the G7 leaders is not just desirable – it is essential. Only by standing together can we protect our citizens, defend our values and deliver real solutions to a world in urgent need of stability and direction.” — António Costa, President of the European Council During the seven scheduled sessions, the summit will underline the leaders’ commitment to collective action in support of Ukraine, the global rules-based order and stronger economic security and resilience. The summit is also expected to address pressing global concerns including energy security and the protection of communities from climate-related disasters, cyber threats and foreign interference. Geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific, will also feature in the discussions. Ahead of the summit, President Costa wrote an article for the Global Governance Project's G7 issue. Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council (Energy), 16 June 2025 EU ministers responsible for energy will meet to discuss the REPowerEU roadmap and approve Council conclusions on energy security. Read more Environment Council, 17 June 2025 EU ministers responsible for the environment will adopt a general approach on the end-of-life vehicles regulation and also hold a discussion on the EU's position for the forthcoming COP30. Read more Economic and Financial Affairs Council, 20 June 2025 Minister will be briefed by the Presidency on the progress made on the EU customs union reform package. The Council will then exchange views on the 2025 European Semester Spring package and approve a horizontal note on country-specific recommendations. Ministers will also adopt implementing decisions under the Recovery and Resilience Facility. The Council will be invited to adopt a recommendation by the euro area member states that paves the way for finalisation of the legal acts for Bulgaria to adopt the euro by January 2026. Read more Agriculture and Fisheries Council, 23-24 June 2025 The Agriculture and Fisheries Council will seek to reach a general approach on a regulation for a forest monitoring framework, and discuss trade-related agricultural issues. Fisheries ministers will exchange views on a Commission communication on sustainable fishing in the EU, highlighting their overall priorities for this year's exercise of setting fishing opportunities for 2026. Furthermore, the Council will take note of the progress made on current legislative proposals, including on animal transport, plant reproductive material and new genomic techniques. Read more Foreign Affairs Council, 23 June 2025 The Council will exchange views on the Russian aggression against Ukraine, after a short intervention of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha via videoconference. They will then hold discussions on the situation in the Middle East and Libya, and China and European security. They will also be informed about current affairs. Read more General Affairs Council, 24 June 2025 Ministers responsible for European affairs will meet in Luxembourg to continue preparations for the European Council meeting on 26-27 June 2025 by discussing draft conclusions. In the context of the European semester 2025, the Council will be invited to approve and transmit to the European Council the horizontal note on the integrated country-specific recommendations. Ministers will also hold a country-specific discussion in the framework of the annual rule of law dialogue, focusing on the rule of law situation in Finland.
