Archipelagos’ marine mammal research internships provide an opportunity to join year-round field work on three dedicated research vessels. During day-long or multi-day research trips, the team gathers data on the bioacoustics, behaviour and photo-identification of seven marine mammal species and their respective threats. In this way we identify critical habitats, while also quantifying human and environmental impacts.
Our main area of focus, the Aegean Sea, is one of the most important remaining marine biodiversity hotspots in the Mediterranean and Europe supporting important populations of 4 species of dolphins, 2 whale species and one of the last remaining populations of the endangered Mediterranean monk seal.
Archipelagos’ research is dedicated to addressing data gaps in this area and aims to enable efficient conservation action. By joining our team, you will be contributing to research devoted to the protection of marine life in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Aegean Sea, is one of the most important remaining marine biodiversity hotspots in the Mediterranean and Europe. Archipelagos' marine ecology research is focuses on:
the assessment of the biodiversity and health of coastal ecosystems,
experimental replanting of Posidonia seagrass meadows.
monitoring of the presence of invasive species

By joining our team, you will be contributing to addressing data gaps and monitoring ecosystems that are changing fast due to climate change and anthropogenic activity.
By joining the GIS team you will be contributing to research on board Archipelagos Institute's 22m research vessel, mapping important marine habitats and conducting and improving spatial analysis skills.
You can gain experience in a range of data collection methods as well as exposure to a scope of GIS platforms and mapping techniques.
The fundamental prerequisite in the attempt to protect these essential habitats is the fabrication of accurate distribution maps, as well as monitoring and quantifying the human impacts on marine ecosystems.
Archipelagos' research on island biodiversity focuses on rare and key species such as the Mediterranean chameleons, the golden jackals and the Eleonora's falcons.
By joining our team, you will contribute to the monitoring and data collection on the populations of protected species of mammals, migratory and resident birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects.
Our research aims to develop and promote the enforcement of measures for their conservation, in order to address the increasing anthropogenic threats that put their survival at risk.
Conservation efforts can only be successful when shared with local communities and the general public. By joining our team, you will contribute to the conservation efforts through the various communications platforms. Creating articles, providing creative documentation material, filming and editing documentary projects, launching awareness campaigns, contributing to the update of of social media and preparing fundraiser events and other related material.
This work aims to share the responsibility for nature conservation, as well as inspire new actions and initiatives.
During the past 24 years at Archipelagos Institute, we have hosted students and educators from all over Greece and further afar in our research bases and boats. It’s through this effort that we aim to fill the many gaps that exist in the traditional educational system’s instruction of environmental subjects. This is the biggest investment we can make if we want our future generations to be inspired and actively engaged in the conservation of natural resources.
By joining our team, you will take part in the design and production of awareness and educational material, such as developing and delivering lessons, designing tangible educational aids, organizing on-site and online workshops, as well as documenting work as it is being carried out by Archipelagos teams in real time.
The Environmental Policy Team works to support the field research carried by Archipelagos team in marine and terrestrial environments and supports the conservation actions that target key habitats and species.
By joining our team, you will conduct research on topics such as fisheries and Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing, analyse EU and international legislation for the conservation of protected habitats (coralligenous and seagrass habitats) and species (marine mammals or chameleons), examine the implementation of restrictions addressing plastic pollution, assess the impact of anthropogenic threats and sustainable vs destructive aquaculture practices.
The Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary will soon be operational as a rescue and rehabilitation center for marine mammals and turtles. Most importantly though it will be the first-of-its-kind sanctuary for formerly captive dolphins.
This internship provides an opportunity for people of various disciplines ranging from veterinary science, animal welfare, marine sciences and communications, to join and contribute to this innovative endeavor, by:
Assisting in the development/testing of operation protocols
Supporting communications and fundraising work
Joining coastal habitat restoration (seagrass replanting and experimental artificial reefs) and other research within the AMLS bay
The AMLS is housed in a model-green building off the grid. It is powered by solar energy, while the water supply comes from a low-energy-demand desalination unit, combined with rainwater collection.
The new main research base of Archipelagos Institute is located on the North coast of Samos, in Agios Konstantinos, a small village, only a few hundred meters from the sea, a short walking distance from cafes, restaurants, a small shop, a pharmacy and amazing hiking paths!
With a total of 1000 square meters, houses both the working and the living areas. There are indoor and outdoor office areas, a presentation room as well as an accommodation facility which comprises 18 rooms and an outdoor eating area.
Surrounded by a rich terrestrial biodiversity that Archipelagos teams are surveying in order to better understand this understudied environment and its ecosystems that reach 1100m of altitude and direct access to the trench of Ikaria - Samos Island that reaches 1400m depth, enabling research in these important marine habitats, cetacean populations and other important biodiversity of the deep waters.
With a clear strategy to gradually reduce efficiently the carbon and plastic footprint of the base, we have already achieved our first goal to be largely self-sufficient producing most of the vegetables and fruits the team consumes in the organic garden situated next to the base. All team members are encouraged to help in our organic garden.
