Secretary General congratulates President Erdogan on re-election, looks forward to finalising Sweden’s NATO membership NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and members of his new government in Istanbul on Sunday (4 June 2023). Calling Türkiye an important and highly valued Ally, Mr Stoltenberg praised Türkiye’s contributions of troops to NATO’s peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, including reinforcements following the recent unrest in northern Kosovo. He also thanked Türkiye for contributing to NATO’s training for Iraqi forces, pre-assigning troops to the multinational battlegroup in Hungary, and providing strong support to Ukraine, including through leadership of the Black Sea grain initiative. Informal meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers: Press conference by NATO Secretary General NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg concluded an informal meeting of Foreign Ministers in Oslo, Norway, on Thursday (1 June 2023), calling it an ''opportunity to discuss key issues as we prepare for our summit in Vilnius in July.'' NATO Secretary General, Allies commemorate victims of 22 July terrorist attacks in Norway In a tribute to the victims and survivors of the 22 July 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg praised the resilience of the Norwegian people and the strength of democracy on Wednesday (31 May 2023). The Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, the leader of the support group for the victims, Lisbeth Røneland, and NATO Foreign Ministers attended the ceremony. The event preceded an informal meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers and invitee Sweden which will take place on Thursday (1 June 2023). Informal meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers: Doorstep statement by NATO Secretary General and arrivals of Ministers Arriving at Oslo City Hall to chair a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers on Thursday (1 June 2023), Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Allies would discuss preparations for the Vilnius Summit, not least “how to step up and sustain our support for Ukraine”. Click here for all the video content related to the NATO Secretary General visit to Türkiye.  Portuguese and Romanian jets assigned to Baltic Air Policing fly over Lithuania Portuguese and Romanian Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons are helping shield the skies over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission. Baltic Air Policing was established to secure the skies over the Baltic countries, which don’t have fighters capable of intercepting unknown air contacts. To cover their Allies, several NATO countries send jets to air bases in Lithuania and Estonia, where they are on standby for any contingency. Air policing is a peacetime activity that takes place 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. When NATO Combined Air Operations Centres (CAOCs) detect air traffic that isn’t responding to hails, they can scramble jets to intercept and visually identify the aircraft. On Saturday 03 June, he will attend the inauguration ceremony for the President of the Republic of Türkiye, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoǧan, in Ankara. The Secretary General will also have bilateral meetings with President Erdoǧan and with senior Turkish officials. On Sunday 4 June, the Secretary General is meeting with President Erdogan and members of his new Cabinet in Istanbul.
