It's here! GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement that started in 2012 with the purpose of unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.
On this GivingTuesday, AHEPA encourages our chapters to embody the spirit of GivingTuesday.
2021 has remained a challenging year for many of us. The pandemic still impacts the lives of people and communities all around the world. As always, the AHEPA family has stepped-up to help in this time of need. Our Brothers and Sisters have fully embodied the philanthropic nature of our Order by participating in the #AHEPACares program. Whether donating their money, food or time, AHEPA chapters have answered the call and have made their best efforts to make a difference.
This holiday season, we challenge you to do more.
See what your local communities need to make 2021 a better one for those in need in your communities:
- Donate or Volunteer Safely with Food Banks and Pantries
- Deliver Meals and Groceries to Vulnerable Seniors
- With the elderly community being the most susceptible to COVID-19, it's important to help them be able to stay home and safe. If nobody in your Chapter is able to do in-person grocery shopping, consider helping get them setup with a grocery delivery service such as Instacart or Shipt.
- Sponsor a local family who cannot afford holiday gifts
- Many communities have an Angel Tree program in which people can buy gifts for children or families in need. If you have a local Children's Hospital, contact them to see how you can help make Christmas better for patients.
- Give Blood
- Blood donations are at an all time low and the need for them is at an all time high. Donate!
- Donate Medical Supplies and Equipment
- If your chapter has the means, contact local hospitals and see what they're in need of, or what you can help provide.
- Stay in Touch
- It is especially important that we stay in touch with people during this Holiday season. Skip sending emails and take the time to call and talk to people you know that might be struggling with their mental health during these times.
- Serve in Your Community
- If you're not sure where to start, contact your state's Service Commission to see where help is needed.

AHEPA Mourns Passing of Prominent Community Figures
AHEPA mourns the recent passing of two prominent community figures, Author, Historian and Academician Dan Georgakas, and Peter N. Marudas, former Chief of Staff to the late U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes.
Peter Marudas was an outstanding public servant whose professionalism in the field served as a model for others to emulate, and he was a passionate and effective advocate for the Greek American community. Brother Marudas held membership in Worthington Chapter 30, Baltimore. He was instrumental in shepherding the passage of S.Con.Res.96 in the 106th Congress. The resolution, sponsored by U.S. Sen. Sarbanes, recognized AHEPA family members who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and acknowledged their honor with the special commemorative AHEPA Medal for Military Service.
Professor Dan Georgakas chronicled AHEPA’s founding and early history in his essay, “The Greeks in America.” His important work to record and recount our community's history, in addition to his love for teaching Modern Greek Studies, will be missed sorely.
Professor Georgakas served as the Director of the Greek American Studies Project at the Center for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at Queens College. In addition, he served as editor of the American Hellenic Institute Foundation’s American Journal of Contemporary Hellenic Issues and as a columnist for The National Herald.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the families of Peter Marudas and Dan Georgakas,” Supreme President Jimmy Kokotas said. “Their passing leaves a tremendous void. They will be remembered fondly for their contributions to our community and to their respective professions. May their memories be eternal.” |
