On 4 March 2021, the European Commission published its proposal for a Pay Transparency Directive. The rapporteur Sandra Pereira (The Left) proposed a list of measures to be taken by the Member States and new avenues to be explored to achieve women's equal access to work with rights and decent wages, the closing of the gender pay gap, the eradication of precarious work, the revalorisation of work, workers and wages in general and different sanctions against companies that perpetuate discriminatory practices. Each year it reaffirms the European Parliament’s unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights, a founding principle of our Union. The committees on foreign affairs and development will meet again on 14 October to narrow the list of nominees to a three-candidate shortlist. The winning 2021 laureate will be announced on 21 October by the Parliament's Conference of Presidents (President and political groups' leaders). This followed the extraordinary meeting which took place on 19 August 2021 with Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative/Vice President of the European Commission, where MEPs expressed their concern with developments in Afghanistan and called for urgent action to address the pressing needs on the ground as well as highlighting the implications for international migration. The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained. The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting).
