In the context of the exponential growth of the corona virus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of the epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.
The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, and scrutiny functions are maintained.

On 31 May ANIT will organise a hearing on Transport of species (poultry, rabbits) inadequately covered by Regulation 1/2005, and remaining vulnerable categories of animals (gestating, end-of-production animals).
Certain species do not have clear or specific provisions on their welfare within Regulation 1/2005, despite the fact that they are covered by its scope. Therefore the aim of this hearing is to look into the transport situation for these species, and examine how provisions could/should be applied. 5 experts have been invited and their presentations will be followed by an exchange of views with Members.

In the context of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.
The current precautionary measures do not affect work on legislative priorities.
The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meetings through webstreaming.

Highlights - Reduction of methane emissions: Public Hearing (May 27) - Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development

On Thursday 27 May, from 9:00 to 11:00, the ENVI Committee, in association with the ITRE and AGRI committees, will hold a public hearing on “The EU strategy to reduce methane emissions”. Members will debate with a number of experts and the European Commission on the actions needed to combat methane emissions, in particular in the agriculture, energy and waste sectors. ENVI is due to prepare a draft report on the topic by mid-June.

On 3 June, the EMPL Committee will hold a Structured Dialogue with European Commission Executive Vice-President Dombrovskis and Commissioner Schmit. Members will consider the amendments to the draft report ‘adequate minimum wages in the European Union’ and will discuss a question for oral answer and draft motion for a resolution on the introduction of a European Social Security Number

On 25 May, AIDA and EMPL Committees organised a hearing on AI and the labour market, in which AI's impact on the future of skills was also discussed.
The event aimed to explore questions such as how can the labour market adapt to fast progressing digitalisation and increasing deployment of artificial intelligence, how to respond when new jobs emerge because of AI and some old ones disappear, what kind of skills will be needed in the future and how to ensure people have them, and how will AI change the workplace and the future of work and how to prepare for it.

On Wednesday 2 June 16.30-18.00 AIDA and IMCO members will hold a joint exchange of views with Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager, notably on the recent Commission proposal for a Regulation laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence, the "AI Act".
The proposal suggests new rules and actions aiming to turn the European single market into a global hub for trustworthy AI. This combination of the first-ever legal framework on AI and a new Coordinated Plan with Member States aims to guarantee the safety and fundamental rights of people and businesses, while strengthening AI uptake in the single market, investment and innovation across the EU.

The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meeting through webstreaming.

On Wednesday 2 June 16.30-18.00 AIDA and IMCO members will hold a joint exchange of views with Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager, notably on the recent Commission proposal for a Regulation laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence, the "AI Act". The proposal suggests new rules and actions aiming to turn the European single market into a global hub for trustworthy AI.
This combination of the first-ever legal framework on AI and a new Coordinated Plan with Member States aims to guarantee the safety and fundamental rights of people and businesses, while strengthening AI uptake in the single market, investment and innovation across the EU. On Tuesday 25 May 2021 Policy Department C, at the request of the FEMM Committee, organised a Workshop entitled: “Three years after #Metoo - what needs to be done? A call for reforms to avoid sexual harassment in EU institutions”.

On Tuesday 25 May 2021, the FEMM and LIBE committees held an exchange of views entitled ‘The Istanbul Convention - 10th anniversary, including the impact of the withdrawal of Turkey’.
This landmark treaty of the Council of Europe was signed in May 2011 in Istanbul. It aims at creating a legal framework at pan-European level to protect women against all forms of violence, and prevent, prosecute and eliminate violence against women and domestic violence.
The FEMM-LIBE exchange of views examined the accomplishments and challenges ten years later, including the recent decision of Turkey to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention.

On Tuesday 25 May 2021 the FEMM and LIBE Committees considered the draft report with recommendations to the Commission on identifying gender-based violence as a new area of crime listed in Article 83(1) TFEU.
This legislative initiative requests the Commission to propose a Council decision to consider gender-based violence as an area of crime that meets the criteria established under Article 83(1) TFEU.
During this meeting, LIBE and FEMM committees also held an exchange of views with several experts in the field of gender-based violence and EU Law. The event fed into the abovementioned legislative initiative.

On 31 May ANIT will organise a hearing on Transport of species (poultry, rabbits) inadequately covered by Regulation 1/2005, and remaining vulnerable categories of animals (gestating, end-of-production animals).
Certain species do not have clear or specific provisions on their welfare within Regulation 1/2005, despite the fact that they are covered by its scope. On Thursday 27 May, from 9:00 to 11:00, the ENVI Committee, in association with the ITRE and AGRI committees, will hold a public hearing on “The EU strategy to reduce methane emissions”. Members will debate with a number of experts and the European Commission on the actions needed to combat methane emissions, in particular in the agriculture, energy and waste sectors. ENVI is due to prepare a draft report on the topic by mid-June.

On Wednesday 2 June 16.30-18.00 AIDA and IMCO members will hold a joint exchange of views with Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager, notably on the recent Commission proposal for a Regulation laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence, the "AI Act".
The proposal suggests new rules and actions aiming to turn the European single market into a global hub for trustworthy AI. This combination of the first-ever legal framework on AI and a new Coordinated Plan with Member States aims to guarantee the safety and fundamental rights of people and businesses, while strengthening AI uptake in the single market, investment and innovation across the EU.

On Friday 28 May, AIDA Committee will organise a workshop on AI and Public Administration. It aims to address the use and impact of AI in public services in the EU. The workshop will feature a scene-setter from the Joint Research Centre and practical examples of AI use in public administration on topics such as improving public administration with AI, fighting crime, document management and urban mobility. The workshop is open to all AIDA members and staff, and will not be webstreamed.

In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.
The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.
The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meeting through webstreaming.

On Tuesday 25 May 2021 Policy Department C, at the request of the FEMM Committee, organised a Workshop entitled: “Three years after #Metoo - what needs to be done? A call for reforms to avoid sexual harassment in EU institutions”.

On Tuesday 25 May 2021, the FEMM and LIBE committees held an exchange of views entitled ‘The Istanbul Convention - 10th anniversary, including the impact of the withdrawal of Turkey’.
This landmark treaty of the Council of Europe was signed in May 2011 in Istanbul. It aims at creating a legal framework at pan-European level to protect women against all forms of violence, and prevent, prosecute and eliminate violence against women and domestic violence.
The FEMM-LIBE exchange of views examined the accomplishments and challenges ten years later, including the recent decision of Turkey to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention.

On Tuesday 25 May 2021 the FEMM and LIBE Committees considered the draft report with recommendations to the Commission on identifying gender-based violence as a new area of crime listed in Article 83(1) TFEU.
This legislative initiative requests the Commission to propose a Council decision to consider gender-based violence as an area of crime that meets the criteria established under Article 83(1) TFEU.
During this meeting, LIBE and FEMM committees also held an exchange of views with several experts in the field of gender-based violence and EU Law. The event fed into the abovementioned legislative initiative.
