EU newsflash State of the Union 2018: 12 September 2018 Science, Food, Society conference of the European Food Safety Authority: 18-21 September 2018 European mobility week: 16-22 September 2018 European day of languages: 26 September State of the Union 2018 On Wednesday 12 September 2018, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, delivered his State of the Union Address before the European Parliament. Here you can find the preliminary special publication. Spotlight on food, farming and fisheries Food, farming and fisheries are strongly interrelated policy areas with a significant impact on the well-being of both consumers and producers, as well as on other important areas of public concern. The common agricultural policy of the EU aims at ensuring a stable food supply produced in a sustainable way at affordable prices. At the same time it supports the welfare of animals and a living countryside, but also farming, one of the major sectors of the economy. Similarly, the common fisheries policyaims at making sure that fishing and aquaculture provide a source of healthy nutrition to consumers now and in the future, while ensuring fair standards of living for fishing communities. Overall, the food safety policy of the EU aims to guarantee safe and nutritious food for the EU's 500 million consumers while enabling the food industry, Europe's largest manufacturing and employment sector, to operate fairly and efficiently in the single market. This publication focuses principally on direct payments, a key element of the policy that provides income support for farmers and promotes competitiveness, sustainability and environmentally friendly farming practices. In the majority of the Member States the social partners have been involved in the setting of the minimum wage in 2018 — in marked contrast to the beginning of the decade when minimum-wage-setting was characterised by strong government intervention. While the highest increases in the minimum wage were recorded (in nominal and real terms) in Bulgaria and Romania, both of these Member States — as well as several others — have a long way to go to catch up with the minimum wage levels prevailing in western Europe.
