Ποιοι είναι αυτοί οι άλλοι;

Statement by the Prime Minister on the 50th anniversary of the Ugandan Asian resettlement
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the 50th anniversary of the Ugandan Asian resettlement:
“Fifty years ago, Canada welcomed more than 7,000 South Asians expelled from Uganda as part of an international resettlement effort. Today, we honour the resilience, strength, and courage of Ugandans of South Asian descent and reflect on the many important contributions they have made – and continue to make – to Canadian communities across the country.
“On August 4, 1972, the Ugandan President Idi Amin Dada ordered all South Asians to leave Uganda within 90 days. This appalling decision reflected severe anti-South Asian discrimination and led to the rapid and brutal expulsion of tens of thousands of people – many were stripped of their Ugandan citizenship and effectively left stateless.
“In the face of this humanitarian crisis, Canada acted swiftly and accepted to take in over 4,400 South Asian Ugandans, and thousands more followed later. The government sent immigration officers to Uganda to help with processing, and Ugandans of South Asian descent started arriving in Canada the following month. After a 19-hour flight, the first group of South Asian Ugandans landed at the Longue-Pointe detachment of Canadian Forces Base Montreal, where they were provided hot food, warm clothing, and a new country to call home.
“In the five decades since, South Asian Ugandans have become a vibrant part of Canada’s social and economic fabric. Their many important contributions have made our country stronger, more diverse, and more inclusive.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the expulsion and resettlement of South Asian Ugandans in Canada and beyond. Canada will continue to honour our longstanding tradition of protecting those fleeing conflict and persecution – no matter who they are and where they are from.”

Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Emancipation Day:
“Today, on Emancipation Day, we acknowledge the painful history of slavery here in Canada and celebrate the strength and determination of Black communities, who fought – and continue to fight – for freedom, justice, and equality.
“Officially designated last year by a unanimous vote in the House of Commons, Emancipation Day falls on the day in 1834 that slavery was abolished in the British Empire. This historic day paved the way to freeing over 800,000 enslaved Africans and their descendants in Canada, parts of the Caribbean, Africa, and South America. Since then, August 1 has been commemorated in many parts of the world, including through celebrations of freedom across Canada.
“Although slavery was abolished nearly 200 years ago, its effects continue to live on today. The legacy of systemic anti-Black racism is still embedded throughout our society, including in our institutions. That’s why today, on Emancipation Day, we pay tribute to the countless changemakers who have worked hard to ensure all members of Black communities in Canada can fully participate in society – it’s thanks to their perseverance and resolve that we have made real progress toward creating a better future for all.
“Through Canada’s Anti‑Racism Strategy, the government continues to tackle all forms of racial discrimination in Canada, including anti-Black racism and systemic inequities, while working to design more effective legislation, policies, programs, and services that benefit all Canadians. We have also made important progress in developing a new, whole‑of‑government action plan to improve the well‑being of Black communities, including through our commitment to implement a Black Justice Strategy to address inequities in the criminal justice system and our continued efforts to eliminate anti-Black hate and systemic racism in all its forms. This work is in line with the themes of recognition, justice, and development from the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent, which Canada recognized in 2018.
“Today, we also celebrate the many achievements and contributions that Black individuals in Canada have made – and continue to make – to our society, and the important role they play in strengthening the country we all call home.
“On Emancipation Day, I invite all Canadians to learn more about Canada’s history of enslavement and segregation, and its lasting impacts, which are still felt by members of Black communities today. We must acknowledge the truths of the past and recommit day after day to combatting anti-Black hate and systemic racism in order to build a better, more inclusive Canada for all.”

Meri Valkama offers a Finnish-German perspective on life before and after the German Democratic Republic (GDR), with her stunning debut novel ‘Sinun, Margot’.
First and foremost this is a book about memory. About the need to remember and the necessity of forgetting.
Markus Siltanen believes in the great socialist dream. So much so that he moves with his family from Finland to East Berlin to work as a foreign correspondent. His daughter Vilja grows up there until the wall falls in 1989. Thereafter the family returns to Finland, and her parents’ marriage falls apart.
After the death of her father, Vilja finds a bundle of letters from a woman named Margot in her father’s apartment. Love letters from the time her family lived in Berlin. From an affair she never knew about.
Vilja returns to Berlin to find Margot, and thus begins a journey of discovery to find out who her father really was. Yet this is a very different Berlin from the one she left. A lingering nostalgia for an East Germany that no longer exists creeps over her.
A sprawling family mystery book that opens up to involve broader societal issues, such as the erosion of ideologies and the idea of freedom.
A truly accomplished debut novel, ‘Sinun, Margot’ is a sure-fire page turner.
Meri Valkama (1980) is a Helsinki-based investigative journalist, writer and communications expert. She spent years in East Berlin during her childhood, studying political science and journalism as an adult at the Free University of Berlin, where she conducted research on journalists who worked in the GDR. ‘Sinun, Margot’ is her debut novel.

We will promote these selections over the summer on the Council Library blog.
Europe is awash with exciting young authors. Dive into this selection and discover stories that hum with fresh ideas and luminous prose. Novels that ask piercing questions about humanity. Stories that are edgy and beautiful, gripping and unsettling. Stories worthy of a place in any library.
