AHEPA, U.S. Ambassador Pyatt Discuss Latest in U.S.-Greece Relations U.S. Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt and Supreme President George G. Horiates discussed the latest developments in U.S.-Greece relations in a call today. “We sincerely thank Ambassador Pyatt for the generous time afforded us,” Supreme President Horiates said. “The United States and Greece are experiencing the ‘Golden Years’ of their enduring relationship. American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association Advocacy Issue Update AHEPA-backed Congressional Amendment Passes An AHEPA-backed bipartisan amendment sponsored by U.S. Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) that is accompanied by language that encourages the U.S. Department of State to denounce Turkey for taking formal action to change the status of Hagia Sophia has passed the U.S. House of Representatives, announced Supreme President George G. Horiates. The language also encourages the State Department to engage with Turkey for purpose of returning its status to a museum. The amendment is part of a larger FY2021 funding bill, H.R.7608, the House is expected to pass tomorrow. "We applaud the U.S. House of Representatives for passing language that encourages the State Department to take action with regard to Hagia Sophia's status," Horiates said. "We sincerely appreciate the lead sponsorship of Congresswoman Titus, who testified to the Rules Committee and who spoke in support of her amendment on the House floor today. We are grateful for the bipartisan support of the amendment's co-sponsors that propelled its passage." On July 20, Supreme President Horiates sent a letter of strong support to the House Rules Committee for the amendment to advance to the House floor for a vote. Pyatt's Statement on Kastellorizo Welcomed In statements made today, U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt reiterated his previous statements that islands have "exactly the same" continental shelf and exclusive economic zone rights as mainland territory, according to news reports. "I have also made a point on many occasions and I will make it again today, that the United States adheres to the principal of international maritime law that islands, including Kastellorizo,” Ambassador Pyatt told ANA-MPA, per a report in Ekathimerini. Ambassador Pyatt also reiterated, "I want to echo the clear message from Washington and elsewhere in Europe urging Turkish authorities to halt operations that raise tensions in the region, such as plans to survey for natural resources in areas where Greece and Cyprus assert jurisdiction in the Eastern Mediterranean." "We welcome Ambassador Pyatt's statements and appreciate the dialogue we are having with the State Department on this pressing matter that is ongoing," Supreme President George G. Horiates said. "However, we do emphasize that any reference to Greece's continental shelf as 'disputed waters' is unacceptable and only emboldens Turkey." Horiates conveyed AHEPA's support for two amendments offered to the FY2021 annual defense authorization bill (NDAA), H.R.6395. The amendments were:  Kinzinger/Spanberger 196 - Requires a determination on the imposition of sanctions with respect to the Government of Turkey’s acquisition of the S-400 air and missile defense system from the Russian Federation Bilirakis/Pappas 654 - Requires a feasibility study on increased rotational deployments to Greece and encourages enhanced U.S. diplomatic engagement w/ Greece-Cyprus-Israel & Greece-Cyprus-Egypt. Both amendments were adopted and passed by the House of Representatives as part of the larger annual defense bill on July 21. H.R.6395 also included an authorization of appropriations of $50.18 million for construction at NSA Souda Bay, Crete. On 12 December 2019, the European Commission adopted a proposal to amend Regulation (EU) No 654/2014 concerning the exercise of the EU's rights for the application and enforcement of international trade rules ('the Enforcement Regulation') of 15 May 2014. The Enforcement Regulation enables the EU to suspend or withdraw concessions or other obligations under international trade agreements in order to respond to breaches by third countries of international trade rules that affect the EU's commercial interests. The proposed amendments would enable the EU to impose counter-measures in situations where EU trade partners violate international trade rules and block the dispute settlement procedures included in multilateral, regional and bilateral trade agreements, thus preventing the EU from obtaining final binding rulings in its favour. The latter are required under the current EU regulation to enforce international trade rules. As the Council adopted its negotiating position on 8 April 2020 and the Committee on International Trade (INTA) of the European Parliament adopted its negotiating position on 6 July 2020, trilogue negotiations can now be launched as the next step in the legislative process. North Korea and South Korea have been on different paths since World War II. The North has remained isolated and poor, its regime inspired by Soviet structures, with a centrally planned economy. The South, meanwhile, after alternating periods of autocratic and democratic rule, made a clear choice at the end of the 1980s in favour of democracy and a market economy, a choice that has led the country to success in several sectors. North and South Korea are still technically at war, as the military conflict of 1950-1953 ended with an armistice that was never followed by a peace treaty. There are 28 500 US (United States) soldiers stationed in South Korea, which signed a Mutual Defence Treaty with Washington in 1953. There have been frequent tensions over the past 70 years, and North Korea has become a de facto nuclear power since the 2000s, prompting international sanctions. Early in 2018 a detente raised hopes of peace. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met with US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, but the summits have led neither to the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, nor to the easing of sanctions against the North. Pyongyang's frustration provoked new tensions in the region in June 2020, when the North, in a symbolic move, destroyed the liaison office in the border area, the de facto embassy of the two Koreas. But Kim's options seem limited at present, and there is little chance of progress until after the US presidential elections. Meanwhile, Moon Jae-in has invested much political capital in the Korean peace process, and is willing to make further moves before the end of his mandate in 2022. The EU has traditionally maintained a policy of critical engagement towards North Korea, upholding the international non-proliferation regime and supporting a lasting reduction in tensions on the peninsula. The EU and South Korea are strategic partners. During the 30 June 2020 EU–South Korea summit, the EU reaffirmed its support for Seoul's efforts to engage with the North to achieve peace and prosperity on the peninsula.

On 11 April 2018, the European Commission published a proposal for a new directive on representative actions for the protection of the collective interests of consumers. Currently, consumer organisations or independent public bodies can bring actions in the name of consumers in courts or before administrative authorities to stop infringements of consumer legislation. According to the proposal, they would be able to demand compensation for consumers as well. The co-legislators reached a provisional agreement on the proposal on 22 June 2020, which now needs to be cofnirmed by both institutions. According to the agreement, Member States would decide themselves the criteria for the designation of qualified entities for domestic actions, while the criteria for cross-border actions would be common across the whole of the EU. A loser-pays principle would be introduced, requiring the defeated party to pay the costs of the proceedings for the successful party. The Commission would be required to evaluate, within five years, whether a European ombudsman for collective redress for consumers is necessary. Third edition. Given the current crisis, all fiscal rules have been suspended. When the economy recovers, both expenditure and structural balance rules will be more difficult to apply as the level and growth of potential output will become more uncertain. Focussing on reducing high debt levels might at that point be more appropriate. The economic argument for a golden rule is that debt can be used to finance the creation of public capital. But this implies that any golden rule should only exempt net investment, which is much lower than the gross investment.

This study, commissioned by the European Parliament’s Policy Department for Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs at the request of the PETI Committee, analyses the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020 and makes recommendations regarding the new European Disability Strategy. The study reflects on the design and implementation of the current Strategy, as well as its achievements and shortcomings. The study makes recommendations in respect of the post-2020 European Disability Strategy. Those recommendations are addressed to the European Parliament, the European Commission and other EU institutions, Member States and key stakeholders, and relate to the groundwork needed to prepare the new Strategy, and the design, content and mechanisms for implementation and enforcement.
