Prime Minister delivers apology to Inuit for the federal government’s management of tuberculosis epidemic from the 1940s-1960s

Apologies cannot undo the wrongs of the past – but they play an important role in setting a commitment to do better, and helping communities heal. By acknowledging these wrongs, we can help renew Canada’s relationship with Inuit, create a more just future, and move forward together on our journey of reconciliation.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today apologized on behalf of the Government of Canada to Inuit for its actions during the tuberculosis epidemic from the 1940s to the 1960s. During this period, thousands of Inuit were sent away from their communities for tuberculosis treatment in southern Canada, where they were cut off from their language, their culture, their families, and their home. In too many cases, when people passed away during treatment, they were buried far from home, leaving families with no knowledge of the fate of their loved ones.

Prime Minister Trudeau recognized the pain and trauma this injustice caused for families and communities across Inuit Nunangat, and the intergenerational impacts that continue to affect Inuit communities today. He also apologized for the colonial mindset that drove these and other government actions and brought such shameful destruction upon Inuit communities.

The Prime Minister also announced the launch of the Nanilavut Initiative, developed in partnership with Inuit, to help Inuit families and communities with the process of healing. In Inuktitut, “Nanilavut” means “let’s find them.” The initiative will help families find information on loved ones sent away during the epidemic. It will also provide other support identified as important by Inuit, including mental health assistance and commemoration activities.

The apology and the Nanilavut Initiative are the result of a collaborative effort between the Government of Canada, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Makivik Corporation, Nunatsiavut Government and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated. Reconciliation initiatives like this are a key priority for these partners, and part of the work of the Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee. They also reflect the Government of Canada’s firm commitment to renewing the Inuit-Crown relationship based on recognition of rights, respect, cooperation, and partnership.

• The Government of Canada has been collaborating with Inuit partners on the Nanilavut Initiative, which will provide family members with information on loved ones who passed away while undergoing medical treatment for tuberculosis between the 1940s and the 1960s.
• The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Inuit-led efforts to eliminate tuberculosis in Inuit Nunangat, as well as the factors that contribute to the spread of the disease, including inadequate housing, food insecurity, and poverty.
• On March 23, 2018, the Government of Canada and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami announced a commitment to eliminate tuberculosis across Inuit Nunangat by 2030, and reduce active tuberculosis by at least 50 percent by 2025.
• Budget 2018 announced $27.5 million over five years to support the Inuit-specific approach to tuberculosis elimination. This includes funding for enhanced prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of TB and latent TB infection.
• This is part of the $509.5 million committed in Budget 2018 to work with Inuit and other partners to strengthen public health programs, collect data through an Inuit Health Survey, invest in housing to address the significant overcrowding in Inuit communities, and support employment and job training.
• This is in addition to the $240 million over 10 years announced in Budget 2017 to support housing in Nunavut.

Statement by the Prime Minister on International Women’s Day

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on International Women’s Day:

“Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate women around the world: their achievements, their contributions, and their leadership. We also take a hard look at the inequalities and injustices women still face – and redouble our efforts to build a gender-equal world.

“This year’s theme, #InnovateForChange, is a call to remove barriers to women’s success as entrepreneurs, as tradespeople, and in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). When women have the tools and opportunities they need to thrive in the careers of their choice, everyone benefits.

“We have seen major progress in the last few years, as more and more women are entering under-represented fields and being recognized for their work. Last October, Canadian physicist Dr. Donna Strickland was a winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics – becoming only the third woman in history to win the prestigious award, and the first woman in 55 years. By breaking glass ceilings, trailblazers like Dr. Strickland pave the way for others to follow suit, and help empower more women and girls to pursue their highest ambitions.

“Advancing gender equality is a top priority for the Government of Canada. Last year, for the first time in Canada’s history, we put gender equality at the core of the federal budget and provided important new funding for women entrepreneurs, newcomer women, and women in trades. In 2017, we launched the first-ever national Strategy to Prevent and Address Gender Violence. With Budget 2018, we made further investments in the strategy, and also announced important funding for organizations across Canada that are on the frontlines of the movement for gender equality. And last December, we created the new Department for Women and Gender Equality to lead these efforts.

“We are also taking action beyond our borders to promote gender equality and help more women and girls achieve their goals. “Measures like these are making a concrete difference in the lives of women and girls the world over. But we still have a long way to go to promote the rights of women, girls, transgender, non-binary, and two-spirit people, and make sure everyone has the same support, opportunities, and chance to succeed. That includes addressing the major disparities among women, and breaking down particular barriers still faced by Indigenous women, women of colour, trans women, queer women, women with disabilities, and others. Moving forward means working to make sure everyone’s rights are equally protected, and everyone’s voice is heard.

The Prime Minister announces a change in the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians

The Honourable Diane Finley P.C., M.P. becomes a member of the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians, effective
March 7, 2019.

The National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians is a multi-party committee that includes representatives from both the House of Commons and the Senate. It has the authority to review national security and intelligence activities carried out across the Government of Canada.

With this appointment, all seats on the Committee are now full.

MR. RICE: Good morning, everyone, and welcome to this briefing on behalf of the International Monetary Fund. I'm Gerry Rice of the Communications Department. And, as usual, this morning this briefing will be embargoed until 10:30 a.m., and that's Washington time.

Also, as usual, I'll take some time to go over a little bit of management travel here at the Fund and major events, and then I'll turn to questions in the room. And I'm seeing quite number of questions on line. I'll try to get to as many of those as I can.

So let me turn to IMF events and so on. Tomorrow, which is International Women's Day, the Managing Director of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, and the interim President of the World Bank Group, Kristalina Georgieva, will have a conversation on the topic of leadership, appropriately, and the benefits of a more gender balanced world. And, again, this is to mark International Women's Week, International Women's Day, which is tomorrow. That event starts at 3:30 p.m. (CORRECTION: the event starts at 3:00 p.m.) It will be live webcast. You can watch it. It's going to be on our website, on the World Bank's website and in the usual paces. So that's tomorrow afternoon.

Then the only other couple of things I want to mention is that David Lipton will be at CSIS, the Center for Strategic and International Studies here in Washington next week, March 13, to launch an IMF book on the future of China's bond market. That's March 13, David Lipton.

The Spring Meetings are coming up and you can register for that. And, as I said, this week, as you may have seen from some of our communications already, there has been a strong focus from the IMF on the role of women in the economy and gender issues. Amongst other things, you might have seen our latest issue of our quarterly magazine, Finance and Development, which is focused appropriately, again, on that issue of women's role in the economy. And as those of you who follow the Fund know, this is now an issue that permeates our work, whether it's programs or lending programs, surveillance, analysis, research, capacity development. It's a big issue for the IMF.

And on that note, let me wish everyone a very happy International Women's Day tomorrow.

Εντυπωσιακά αποτελέσματα για τη μείωση της θνησιμότητας και την ποιότητα ζωής των ασθενών με στένωση αορτικής βαλβίδας – την πιο συχνή σήμερα βαλβιδοπάθεια – έχει η διαδερμική (μη χειρουργική) αντικατάσταση της βαλβίδας. Τα αρχικά ενθαρρυντικά βραχυπρόθεσμα αποτελέσματα επιβεβαιώθηκαν από την τελευταία πολυκεντρική μελέτη PARTNER, που πραγματοποιήθηκε στις ΗΠΑ και δημοσιεύτηκε πρόσφατα. Στη μελέτη αυτή οι ερευνητές συμπεριέλαβαν ασθενείς υψηλού κινδύνου για χειρουργική επέμβαση. Στη συνέχεια, τυχαιοποιήθηκαν οι ασθενείς σε φαρμακευτική αγωγή ή διαδερμική αντικατάσταση της αορτικής βαλβίδας. 
Στο πρώτο έτος παρακολούθησης είχε εντυπωσιακά καλύτερα αποτελέσματα η διαδερμική αντικατάσταση σε σχέση με τη συντηρητική αντιμετώπιση. Οι ασθενείς είχαν μειωμένη θνητότητα ανεξαρτήτως αιτίας (30% έναντι 50%) αλλά και μειωμένη ανάγκη για νοσηλεία (42,5% έναντι 70%), στοιχείο που «μεταφράζεται» σε καλύτερη ποιότητα ζωής.
Η μέθοδος εφαρμόζεται στη Α’ Καρδιολογική Κλινική του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (Ιπποκράτειο), στο Ωνάσειο, στο Αττικόν και στο ΑΧΕΠΑ. Με επικεφαλής της ιατρικής ομάδας στο Ιπποκράτειο τους επίκουρους καθηγητές Εμ. Βαβουρανάκη και Κ. Τούτουζα, έχουν ήδη αντιμετωπιστεί 60 ασθενείς με μεγάλη επιτυχία, που παρέμεναν χωρίς θεραπεία έως τώρα.
«Με συνεχώς βελτιωμένες τεχνικές και συσσώρευση εμπειρίας, τα αποτελέσματα μάς κάνουν ιδιαίτερα αισιόδοξους για τη μελλοντική ανάπτυξη της μεθόδου», λέει ο κ. Τούτουζας.
Οι βαλβιδοπάθειες, δηλαδή η αλλοίωση ή βλάβη των βαλβίδων της καρδιάς, αποτελούν ένα σημαντικό αίτιο νοσηρότητας και θνητότητας. Τα αίτια για ανάπτυξη βαλβιδοπάθειας, εκτός από τις εκ γενετής βαλβιδοπάθειες, που πάντα αποτελούσαν ένα μικρό ποσοστό τους, έχουν αλλάξει πολύ τα τελευταία χρόνια.
«Ο ρευματικός πυρετός που παλαιότερα αποτελούσε το κύριο αίτιο έχει πλέον σχεδόν εξαλειφθεί, ενώ η αύξηση του μέσου όρου ηλικίας του γενικού πληθυσμού και ο σύγχρονος τρόπος ζωής (κακή διατροφή – παχυσαρκία, έλλειψη άσκησης) ευνοούν σήμερα την ανάπτυξη εκφυλιστικού τύπου βαλβιδοπαθειών, με συχνότερη την στένωση της αορτικής βαλβίδας. Πρόσφατες μελέτες του κ. Τούτουζα έδειξαν τον ρόλο της φλεγμονής στην ανάπτυξη της στένωσης της αορτικής βαλβίδας.
Τα συμπτώματα της βαλβιδοπάθειας αυτής είναι η ζάλη ή συγκοπή, η στηθάγχη και η δύσπνοια. Η διάγνωση είναι σχετικά εύκολη (με την ακρόαση) και επιβεβαιώνεται με το υπερηχογράφημα καρδιάς.
Εως και σήμερα η χειρουργική αντικατάσταση της αορτικής βαλβίδας αποτελεί την κλασική θεραπευτική επιλογή στους ασθενείς με σοβαρή στένωση που παρουσιάζουν συμπτώματα. Τα άμεσα και τα μακροπρόθεσμα αποτελέσματα της χειρουργικής επέμβασης είναι πολύ ικανοποιητικά. Η στένωση όμως αορτικής βαλβίδας στην πλειοψηφία των ασθενών εμφανίζεται σε προχωρημένη ηλικία. Συνήθως σε αυτούς τους ασθενείς παρουσιάζονται και άλλα συνοδά προβλήματα, όπως νεφρική ανεπάρκεια, στεφανιαία νόσος, περιφερική αγγειοπάθεια και αναπνευστικά προβλήματα......

       Με το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι στο μυαλό παρακολουθώ τα πολιτικά τεκταινόμενα, κυρίως της κεντρικής πολιτικής «σκηνής», χωρίς βέβαια να παραλείπω τα αυτοδιοικητικά  και διεθνή. Όλοι και όλες τους «κοιτούν» από πολύ …ψηλά. Κουβεντιάζουν-ο Θεός να την κάνει κουβέντα αυτή- για όποιο θέμα τους απασχολεί και παρεπιμπτόντως για τους πολίτες. Ορθό, είναι μόνο ό,τι εκείνοι προτείνουν και πράττουν, ανεξαρτήτως αποτελέσματος ή επηρρεασμού των απλών πολιτών, των οποίων την γνώμη γράφουν στα παλαιότερα των υποδημάτων τους.

Η μοναδική δικαιολογία τους είναι ότι «ου γαρ οίδασιν τοι ποιούσιν». Ξέρετε, η ημιμάθεια είναι παρασάγγας επτακαίδεκα χειρότερη της αμάθειας. Εάν σ’ αυτήν  προσθέσετε την κομματική παρωπίδα και την υπεράσπιση της καρέκλας, το γεγονός λαμβάνει τεράστιες διαστάσεις.

Η προχειρότητα ο ωχ-αδερφισμός, η δημαγωγία,το ανερυθρίαστο ψέμα κατάμουτρα, οι παλινωδίες, η αναποτελεσματικότητα, χαρακτηρίζουν το διαποτισμένο με αυτά τα.. μοναδικά χαρακτηριστικά το πολιτικό κατεστημένο και το ευρύτερο «οπαδικό» τοιούτο.Παραδείγματα, καθημερινά έρχονται στο φως της δημοσιότητας, με τη στάση των μεν, εκ διαμέτρου αντίθετη με αυτή των δε. Πρόσφατο παράδειγμα η Εισαγγελική έρευνα της τραγωδίας στο ΜΑΤΙ με την εκατόμβη των νεκρών, τις  απίστευτες συνομιλίες  των «εντεταλμένων», τη στάση των ιθυνόντων και αρμοδίων πολιτικά, και -το τραγικότερο όλων- να τους ακούμε να παραδέχονται on camera ότι «πάλι το ίδιο θα έπρατταν»!!

Τσίπα βέβαια μην ψάχνετε να βρείτε, γιατί ποιος την έχασε για να τη βρουν ΑΥΤΟΙ. Όταν δεν έχει ακουστεί κουβέντα για τις εκατόμβες ανθρώπων που έχουν οδηγηθεί στην αυτοχειρία, απελπισμένοι από την ανέχεια και την εξαθλίωση στην οποία το πολιτικό σύστημα τους οδήγησε με αποκορύφωμα την τετραετία της τερατογεννημένης ιδεολογικο-πολιτικά συγκυβέρνησης δήθεν αριστερών με δεξιότερους των δεξιών..

    

     Αλήθεια υπάρχει νοήμων και μη «βολεμένος» Έλληνας που θα ψηφίσει χωρίς να σταθμίσει όσα του έχουν φορτώσει τα «γνωστά»  (γιατί τα άγνωστα.. έπονται).

     Υπάρχει Έλληνας πλέον να τρώει «κουτόχορτο»;

     Υπάρχει Έλληνας που να δίνει σημασία στις δημοσκοπήσεις;

Έρχονται εκλογές και ο κάθε κατεργάρης επιβάλλεται να πάει από εκεί που ήρθε. Και όχι έτσι απλά,χωρίς συνέπειες, πρέπει να του καταλογιστούν όλες οι ευθύνες. Σ΄ αυτό  πιστεύω να συμφωνούμε όλοι.

Η αστική μη κερδοσκοπική εταιρεία θεάτρου «ΔΙΑΘΕΣΗ ΤΕΧΝΗΣ», παρουσιάζει στον πολυχώρο Galerie Δημιουργών, την κοινωνική κωμωδία «Think Pink», βασισμένη στο βραβευμένο έργου του Κύπριου θεατρικού συγγραφέα Άθου Χατζηματθαίου «Κρίση με πιάνει κρίση», υπό την αιγίδα του Ομίλου για την UNESCO Πειραιώς και Νήσων.

Μία bar theater παράσταση, που προσπερνάει τα προβλήματα της κοινωνίας μας και την οικονομική κρίση, με μόνο όχημα τη θετική σκέψη και πολύ γέλιο.

Ένα ροκ καφέ μπαρ, φιλοξενεί την διαπλοκή, τον παραλογισμό και την ανθρώπινη αφέλεια. Οι φιλίες δοκιμάζονται, ενώ τα λεφτά με τον έρωτα κάνουν τραμπάλα και φέρνουν τα πάνω κάτω στις ανθρώπινες σχέσεις!

In Letter to Pompeo, AHEPA Urges U.S. to Act as Turkish Troops Violate Status Quo on Cyprus AHEPA sent a letter Feb. 26 to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo conveying the Order's strong concern about the Turkish military's advancement in the area of the Cypriot village of Strovilia, announced Supreme President George E. Loucas. According to news reports, the Turkish military's incursion occurred between February 1 and February 11, 2019. The United Nations peacekeeping mission has recorded the Turkish military's action as a breach of the area's status quo.
