Statement by the Prime Minister on Rosh Hashanah

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Rosh Hashanah:

“Tonight, at sunset, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

“The first of the High Holidays, Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the 10 ‘Days of Awe’. Jewish communities will reflect on past challenges and hope for a better future. Families and friends gather to pray, share traditional meals, eat apples and honey, and listen to the sound of the shofar.

“Jewish Canadians have played an incredibly important role throughout Canada’s history. On Rosh Hashanah, we take the opportunity to recognize the immeasurable contributions of Jewish Canadians and their leadership in helping us build a more prosperous country.

“This Rosh Hashanah will be the first since last year’s horrific terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, which continues to impact Jewish communities around the world. We mourn and remember the lives lost during this heinous act of terror, including the Canadians murdered. We stand with the survivors and support Israel’s right to defend itself in accordance with international law. We unequivocally condemn Hamas – a brutal terrorist organization – and we demand the immediate release of the remaining hostages.

“Canada is also committed to holding the Iranian regime accountable for its actions, including yesterday’s large-scale missile attack. This attack is yet another destabilizing action by the regime and should not – and cannot – be tolerated by the international community. Canada unequivocally condemns this reckless attack targeting innocent civilians, and we fully support Israel’s right to defend itself against this and any other attack from Iran. We once again call for de-escalation across the region.

“The disgusting increase in antisemitism across Canada must stop. The Government of Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Jewish communities and to building a country where everyone feels safe to practise their culture and faith. Whether it’s at a synagogue or a Jewish-owned business or school; whether it’s wearing the Star of David or a Kippah – Jewish Canadians have the right to live proudly and openly Jewish lives, without intimidation or fear.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish everyone celebrating Rosh Hashanah a healthy, peaceful, and prosperous New Year.

AHRQ Summit To Address Emergency Department Boarding

 

AHRQ Summit To Address Emergency Department Boarding An AHRQ summit on Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET will address the challenges of emergency department (ED) boarding. The live stream webcast will be aimed at identifying hospital- and health system-level solutions to circumstances that sometimes force patients to spend hours—or in some cases, days—in the ED while waiting for an inpatient bed or transfer to another facility. Interested audiences may include patients and consumers, clinicians, hospital and health system leaders, policy makers, experts in emergency medicine, community health, behavioral health, and specialty care providers. Dear readers, Full steam ahead as we enter one of the busiest times of the year on the fisheries front!  We are also preparing for the new mandate of the European Commission, and already congratulate Costas Kadis on his nomination as the new Commissioner-designate for Fisheries and Oceans.  On quotas, we presented a first set of fishing opportunities for 2025 in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.  To ensure a level-playing field for our fishers, we’re also proposing a revision of our tools to address unsustainable fishing practices by non-EU countries on fish stocks of common interest.  I am also happy to announce that we have renewed our sustainable fisheries partnership agreement with Guinea-Bissau!  Finally, catch up on this month’s OCEAN series, with a riveting episode dedicated to the Digital Twin of the Ocean!   Warm regards,  Charlina Vitcheva, Director-General  Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries @vitcheva_eu

 

CDC and Global Partners Commit to Collective Action to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance

In late September 2024, global leaders gathered in New York City for the second United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting (UNGA HLM) on Antimicrobial Resistance. Since the first UNGA HLM on Antimicrobial Resistance in 2016, the United States (U.S.) has made tremendous progress toward the goals in the U.S. National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-resistant Bacteria. This progress—which could not have been made without dedicated efforts from the U.S. Government and our partners working across One Health—demonstrates what is possible with collective effort toward shared goals and targets. The UNGA HLM provided a platform for CDC and global partners to continue to identify and commit to actions needed to combat antimicrobial resistance. CDC took the opportunity afforded by the UNGA HLM and surrounding events to share the impact of our investments in: Building laboratory and surveillance capacity Strengthening infection prevention capacity Improving appropriate antibiotic and antifungal use Increasing antimicrobial resistance awareness and knowledge Advancing innovation and research The UNGA HLM was also an opportunity to create new connections and strengthen established partnerships with governmental and non-governmental partners across the globe.

Σύμφωνα με το ΣτΕ οι ελεγκτές δεν τήρησαν τους όρους και τις προϋποθέσεις που προβλέπονται από τη νομοθεσία αφού ο Κώδικας φορολογίας Εισοδήματος προβλέπει ότι η επιμήκυνση της παραγραφής από τα πέντε στα δέκα χρόνια γίνεται αποδεκτή για πληροφορίες που έρχονται σε γνώση του ελεγκτικού μηχανισμού από το εξωτερικό για τις οποίες δεν μπορούσε να έχει πρόσβαση...."

"..Όπως επισημαίνει το ΣτΕ «σε οποιαδήποτε άλλη περίπτωση, και ανεξαρτήτως της δυσκολίας και της πολυπλοκότητας της υπόθεσης, των αντικειμενικών δυσκολιών που αντιμετωπίζει κατά τον κρίσιμο χρόνο η φορολογική αρχή και της έλλειψης συνεργασίας του φορολογούμενου, τα στοιχεία που περιέρχονται στη φορολογική αρχή στο πλαίσιο της αμοιβαίας διοικητικής συνδρομής δεν μπορούν να δικαιολογήσουν την παράταση της παραγραφής από πενταετή σε δεκαετή, διότι, άλλως, κατά παράβαση της αρχής της ασφάλειας δικαίου, η φορολογική αρχή θα μπορούσε να καθορίσει με τις ενέργειες και, ιδίως, τις παραλείψεις της τη διάρκεια της παραγραφής...».
